Best Rider Season? Help
I'm flailing around here trying a couple episodes of almost every rider season and I can't get a grip.
I'm not a fan of the 90% drama and 10% action formula some of them have going on. Which is REALLY sad for Kiva because I thought I would LOVE that show. I need more action than the last 2 minutes of the show... If someone tells me it involves from a soap opera into more of an action show I'll be so so happy. Wizard seemed okay but a lot of pple say the story doesnt really go anywhere. Fourze was decent but, i dunno. Mainly the goofiness of his abilities gets me. Ryuki was TERRIBLE imo. man. I tried an episode of kabuto but was immediately not interested. I also tried Decade and I can't really tell if its good or bad right now. lol A lot of people say the story for that one ends up sucking too. Are there ANY others in the neo era that strike the oh so good balance Gaim has? I need equal parts action and dramatic story. I dont want a soap opera that has heroes in it for 2 minutes. But I also need a good story. I know I'm picky but I could really use some help. |
Well ones that I love that you haven't tried are OOO, Agito, Kuuga, Blade, and Faiz.

The thing about Rider is that it's much more story and character focused than sentai, which is all action, all toys and aimed at a much younger audience. So although there are bad examples like Faiz with thirty second bookend fights which are completely disconnected from everything else even great Rider shows like OOO are never what you'd call action packed.
In terms of Wizard it does go somewhere. It's just how it gets there that's the problem for a lot of people which I perfectly understand. Decade is meant to be bad but I've enjoyed what I've seen and it's got much higher production values than any other shows so it might be what you're looking for. There are other highly regarded shows like Blade and Kuuga with hype you should NOT believe in. Both are terrible from a character and story perspective and I think they had a fiver between them to spend on effects. |
Actually I did try OOO. It wasnt bad but.. it wasnt good.
And what do you mean by how it gets there? Does it drag? How is decade MEANT to be bad? Also, Gaim has imo, a lot of action going on. I feel like there's a very healthy mix of action and drama. Do any other rider seasons have a similar mix? |
Have you tried W? That might be a good port of call.

Blade has that great mix just like Gaim. There's a fair amount of action and it's pretty great. Plus Blade's story is so heavily tied into its action. It strikes a great balance and is my favorite Rider series.
The rotating cast of villains are different yet remain interesting, the character relationships are great and the mythology is pretty awesome. I would have given you my next top 3 after Blade but considering you like none of them... W is good. Can't go wrong with W. Not OMG amazing in my books but everything about it is great and is consistently great across all aspects. |

Decade was meant to be a villain. Go Double or Blade. Kabuto has plenty of action, too, but you were uninterested. I'd also recommend sticking with OOO for a little more, too. It has more action than many other series. If you're still not a fan, drop it, but it doesn't have the drama/action disparity you don't like. |
I'd have to say, find what works best for you cause some members like Kamen Rider shows that you won't be interested in it all boils down to what you'd wanna watch.

Does Wizard drag? It depends on how you look at it. Personally Rider is not a franchise all that notable for its action for me, shows like Blade or Kuuga are shows everyone raves about, but the awful fights and pathetic effects made it unwatchable for me. So to watch a show like Wizard with consistently great action made the show more than watchable for me, it certainly helped that I loved Haruto, he's one of the best main Riders in the franchise for me. Sadly though, ultimately, the show has enough plot for about five episodes overall, and when the show finally decides to pull its finger out it's way too late and the final ten or so episodes of the series may well be from another show. One that is a lot more focused, but considerably more stupid, than Wizard ever was. I dunno about Decade. Decade has been fantastic for me so far meanwhile I like Gaim's story and characters but the action is the worst part about it for me. |
Meant to be a villain? That's kind of cool. Lol. The pink on his suit throws SME off. But its not as bad as W split color. I dunno how someone could think gaims action was bad...
Anyway. I'll continue trying kiva and maybe decade. Maybe I just need to go back to sentai. Go-busters was perfect for me. |

The W split design is bad? That may actually be the first time I've heard that opinion expressed. Interesting.
I actually like the Decade color scheme. Between Decade and Diend, they neatly cover the CMYK color model. Of course, that could just all those design classes I took in college. To each his own, though. I think Sentai honestly might be your best bet. You've found flaws with pretty much every Neo-Heisei series there is and it's clear you aren't enjoying them. Kamen Rider may just not be your cup of tea. Edit: I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Diversity makes the world go around, after all. |
Well. There's even a lot of sentai I tried that I didn't Like. I guess i'm REALLY picky.
Decade costume doesn't BOTHER me. it's just..different. But a cool design ill grant. I'm on episode like. 7 of Kiva. And it's not bad. But its not making me love it either. I'll give it a while longer. And locke. I'll agree about the everyone using a bow concept. I don't like that. But a few characters don't use them. Kachadoki arms? badass. And Micchy hasn't fallen into the just use a bow trap yet so..theres that. I wish Mango arms was used more too. |
W gets my vote.

Well, see I would never recommend Gaim as a first rider series because, when you go back to watch the older shows and their pacing,,it just feels slower. So maybe if you got older rider out of the way and get used to that and have Gaim going too may of been the better choice.
Now out of the shows I've watched Ryuki was okay, but a bit slow and the ending was alright. I'm watching Hibiki right now and I think its pretty good, the design to me looks cool, and the way it's set up is pretty great. Maybe I'm just biased since I played trumpet, but yeah. Kabuto is also another one I'm watching and the mystery it has, about the belt is pretty great and so are the characters. When I first saw it I was like what the heck? But after knowing Tendou is the main Rider I re watched the first episode and I've been watching it ever since. Den-O from what I've seen is more fun, than most shows so it has that going for it. Decade could spoil some story of a show for you (if you remember what happened in Decade). But it was also a mess, like towards the end it felt different than the beginning. W is pretty great with some of my favorite riders Shotaro and Phillip and the ending (minus the last episode) was done well, and I liked it. Seeing who Phillip really is was great and, while not having the best designs the story was pretty good. OOO of what I've seen was pretty entertaining. Fourze, just sort of stood where it was and I actually dropped it. Wizard, it was good with some pretty great action, but I think I'm at that point where the filler really starts so. Gaim is pretty good with pacing, but it might be to good for some, especially if your getting into rider. Now the action isn't the best, it's to me meh compared to the story itself. |
