I dont have a story myself, at LexCon, I was in line the last day, he was late, which meant I was gonna be late for the Bulk and Skull panel, my Dad waited in line for me instead. So I got JDF to sign my Dino Thunder cup anyway. Although the Dino Thunder Q&A Panel did get better after he had to leave, since the whole time he was there he interrupted the other threes questions and made it for him. So meh, nothing to exciting.

I attended his VIP at SDCC 2013. His wife sat with her purse open at the table conducting a survey of who bought what, called out our names, and proceeded to pocket any and all money in to said purse.
Then JDF showed up (late), sat at a table, told us stories while he signed "BRAND NEW PICTURES YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY THESE JUST CAME OFF THE PRESS!". Told us many times about his Official Facebook Fan Page, told us stories about ASJ and how he's not a bad guy, just different and grew up differently (basically the most PC method of saying "I don't like him at all"), told the same stories he's told at every panel he's ever been on (the fly in David Yost's sandwich, farting on Steve Cardenas face, the time JYB didn't spot him flipping off a tree and he cut open his face during Zeo, etc.). Before that, I ran in to him in line while getting a pretzel. Told him I was going to his VIP and was looking forward to it. Without looking at me he said "Yeah cool buddy" and turned his back to me and started whispering with his wife. While I'm sure it wasn't meant to be a dick move, it still felt that way after having him jump on the Bandai table shouting how much he loves his fans and no other Power Ranger would do this for his fans but him. Cameras roll? Game face on. Cameras off? Fuck you I'm a celebrity. That's my impression after meeting him. |

While I would love to share these stories, it's frankly in bad taste to do so publicly. They do not paint him in a good light in the slightest, they are a very honest look at what he's like when you aren't giving him money or putting a camera in front of him. Unfortunately though they'll merely serve to make me look like I'm hating. Kickback & Sentai Tamashii have heard them before though privately.

I've never met the man personally. But from his Bat in the Sun doc, if you can call it that, and things I've heard from people who have no reason to lie about it? I'm not a fan. I used to be a fan, I used to love the guy. But yea. Not anymore.

After hearing all the stories, it just makes me further my belief that Johnny Yong Bosch is my favorite MMPR Ranger and that JDF was overhyped.

Y'know, I'm not a defender of the man but I do find it funny how fickle and easily swayed audiences are.
It's always blown my mind that guys like Mark Whalberg or Downey JR are allowed the careers they have, and the millions they make, despite the pasts they have had. Why should they be forgiven? Likewise it sounds like JDF is a total dick, and everyone is rallying against him but I almost feel like saying 'who cares?'. I've gotten angry at him at this shit too before I realised that his personal life is none of my business and if you expect the character and the actor to be the same person then you're bound to be disappointed. And sure he talks a lot of shit, but what celebrity doesn't? Every celebrity strokes and promotes that is just what they do, some are certainly more subtle and generally better than JDF at it but I think considering he's never blinded a veteran or had the police chase him across the state in a drug fuelled haze he's not worth raging over. And maybe this acceptance that this is "just how it is" is actually the whole problem here but I'm not going to be able to change that. |

The sad truth is, the fans are the ones that have fed his ego, and perhaps what bothers me most is hearing he is like this and yet a supposed born again(of course who am I to judge a persons faith? lest I be judged) but it would seem to contradict a tattoo he openly has.

I don't want to meet him, really. When I was a boy I was a fan of his character Tommy, not him. He wants to play a ranger in the new movie, please, this just shows how much he is in it too for the money. He wanted to be an mma fighter and wanted people to forget he was the power ranger, but as soon as his mma career did not take off guess what he is back to the fandom he loves. Leaves a lot to say about him.

Can't speak for JDF . Despite my love of Tommy , all of these horror stories of people meeting him and being left with a bad taste in their mouth has made me not want to meet him. I have a spent way too much on Green Ranger merch and have a Green Ranger tattoo on my arm. If he leaves a bad taste in my mouth in any way , I am kinda screwed.
But i can speak for Austin St.John , Walter Jones and Karen Ashley. All 3 of them were incredibly friendly to me and took pictures of my Power Ranger tattoos and complimented my artist and fan dedication. David Yost was kinda eh , but it was a weird situation how i met him. So i don't really have a bad impression , just not a very good one. |
You weren't one of the fans that met David in a bathroom were you?

Ohhhh, ok. I understand that.

I met JDF at SDCC 2014 for the first time ever and honestly he has one of the kindest nicest guys I met. I paid for my autograph and my younger brother was with me (hes 20) and was givving me a hard time ribbing me during the signing things like "jeez its taken you this long to meet him and you own all that green ranger stuff" "half your clothes have the green ranger on them" stuf like that. JDF jokes along too like "oh wow huge fan and first meeting we gotta remember this" came out from behind the table and did a photo op as well free of charge even though they were charging 20$ for the photo with auto.
So yeah I can't say anything negative as my only experiance with him was very positive. |
What I don't like about the guy, was the whole Morphin madness incident. I didn't grow up with the original rangers when I was in 1st grade Time Force was the newest series and I had some old VHS tapes of in space-light speed. By him telling everyone to vote for him over and over made me feel like the rangers I grew up with didn't matter at all and that the original is the best I understand people have a nostalgic feeling over mmpr but I don't what I get nostalgic over is all the series from my childhood from in space-SPD. Plus when I put my top ten rangers on YouTube I don't have ANYONE from mmpr my favorite ranger is the magna defender I know some don't count him as one but he has a morpher, zord, Megazord formation, and a freaking awesome weapon and suit, I always get hate comments because I don't have anyone from mmpr there. When I look at other comments that said the original is the best and that all the others are trash, I feel a little sad.I read the yellow Dino rangers interview that stated all JDF cared about were the close ups and focus episodes, and I saw the behind the scene video from mmpr that showed how annoying he was, how the green ranger was above everyone else, how he was mean to David, and how he would always show up early to tell the staff if he can get the best action shots. Not to mention all the drama between him and Austin, talk about not letting things go. I just never liked before and have reason not to like him now. I'm just glad I'm going to morphicon to meet some of my favorite rangers and JDF won't be there.
