Tokunation Summer Pokémon Tournament
 

Welcome, one and all!

I have been meaning to for a while and am finally now getting around to properly hosting this wonderful tournament! I apologize for the delays, as I have brought it up before in the Pokémon topic, but I have been quite busy.

The name of the game is Pokémon. Specifically, we will be playing Pokémon X and Y.

First and foremost, you must sign up for this tournament. To sign up, visit this page and click "sign up."

The service we will be using for bracket management is called Challonge. You will need to make an account on the site, so please try to use the same username as the one you use here. This is assuming you do not have one already; I did, and my name, for example, is "Ektris" there. If that is the case, just post here stating your username.

After the tournament starts properly, you can find the full bracket here. Note that seeding at the moment is only temporary and is indeed based upon order of sign-up. Before it starts, it will be randomized for fairness. Use this bracket to keep track of standings and see your opponents so you know who to contact/expect contact from to arrange matches.

Let us get to the rules and regulations then...

1. The tournament will be run using double elimination. Upon the conclusion of a match, one of the participants should make a post stating the winner and number of Pokémon they had remaining (just for statistics).
2. Please keep set up and match commentary to a minimum or in private messages, just to make it easier to find results and questions in this topic.
3. Singles battle only with flat battle rules to ensure a fair playing field.
4. Absolutely no hacked Pokémon. It does not matter to me even if you only created something that is feasible given an inane amount of time spent in-game (such as a 6-IV shiny Pokémon) - it is cheap, does give an unfair advantage, and will not be tolerated. If you suspect another player of cheating, please report it via private message. Any users found to be using hacked Pokémon will be disqualified.
5. The following Pokémon are banned: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquazza, Jirachi, Deoxys (all formes), Dialga, Palkia, Giratina (Origin and Altered), Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin (Land and Sky), Arceus, Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem (all formes), Keldeo (Ordinary and Resolute), Meloetta, Genesect, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde.
6. The following Mega Evolutions are banned: Kangaskhan, Blaziken.
7. Most importantly, have fun. :)

Rules are entirely subject to change and open to input up to the official start of the tournament, upon which they will be considered final. Please, do give feedback as I do not know everything people will object to.

The tournament begins on Sunday, July 13.

This will largely depend on user interest. That is, how quickly people sign up and it is determined we either have an acceptable number or no more are expected to join. The sign-up page has been available for some time but the number remains small. Hopefully the count will grow faster with better exposure via a dedicated topic.

With that, let it begin! As I said before, ask any and all questions or bring up any concerns here. I do want us to all enjoy this and make it fair for everyone, so with your help that will be all the more easier.

All Mega Evolutions are allowed? Are you sure that's the wisest decision?

This sounds interesting, except I haven't played/trained my Pokemon in a while. Haha

I think that's the second or third time you've expressed interest, but you still haven't signed up...?

Ummmmmmm noooo... I'm all for banning Mega Blaziken and maybe Mega Kangaskhan (until I trained one myself I really did underestimate just how OP those two moves can be)... But then people (translation: Smogon) also think Mega Gengar should be banned and I'm entirely against that since I don't see the point. So I left all in waiting to see any specific objections from others instead of my personal opinion ruling it.

I'm in, but I hope to gosh that you at least ban mega Kangaskhan.

Mega Gengar was banned because it could control a match. With Shadow Tag, it forced all opposition to fight it, and when an enemy came out that could defeat it, it could run.
Adding it's breakneck speed of 130, it's astounding Sp.A of 170, only a handful of enemies can successfully defeat it without the random factor (And it's ability nets it a free kill since the opponent can't swap).

I have never, ever had any luck with a Mega Gengar. Because it loses Levitate, an Earthquake - one of the most popular moves - can easily KO it. It's very likely that you will have a counter. I'm also pretty sure they had doubles in mind, which does make Shadow Tag more annoying. It's not like no other Mega Pokémon get great boosts in stats either.

I'm simply relaying the reasoning. You also forget the prime fact that you have to lose a Pokemon to tag in the counter.

I know, I just wanted to flesh out my reasoning for not liking it too. And touche, if played right Mega Gengar does pretty much guarantee at least one KO.

So...when you say "flat rules" do you mean as in 3 on 3? or all of them get auto leveled to 50?

Are we limited to one team each? I feel like we should be limited to one team each.

I've added myself, I'm currently getting two of my pokemon ready for tournaments: Mawile & Aurorus :3. Also, I'm sure he's gonna have it as battle box only, it wouldn't be a pokemon tournament if he didn't :lol.

I don't know... Since it's double elimination, should you really be punished in that second match just for making poor choices in the first? I'm not at all trying to be official VGCs here. Which are not fun. I want this to be fun.

Well when battling online you can pick battle box or your party... Small difference but really not one that matters too much to me.

Woo, tournament finally has a thread! Looking forward to some good fights this summer. :) No complaints with the rules as they are, maybe worth considering a Blazikenite ban but not absolutely necessary.

The Mega Evos I'd primarily want for a hard ban are M.Kangaskhan and M.Blaziken.

2 others that are entirely up to what you decide are M.Lucario and M.Gengar.

I should probs modify my team then :lol.

Well it's more for Trainers who are a bit lax on building teams and only have 1, maybe two fully trained teams or just 8 or so fully trained Pokemon.

I was thinking more of a grand registery, everyone gets at least 2 teams with a clause of "A Trainers' second team may have up to 3 Pokemon from another one of the teams they are using."

I don't think it necessary to make building the teams so...Bureaucratic.

You've encountered most of my Pokemon already, do you think three dual type physical attackers, a dual type special attacker awaiting a Mega Stone, a rather mediocre dual Flying type supporter, a Sunny Day monotype physical attacker, a Yanmega that you trained up, and a Baton Passer dual type that really should have had Speed Boost instead of Poison Point because I didn't remember that when training the Venipede?
Sure, there are the Pokemon from my initial playthrough, but those aren't properly trained.

I don't even know how to make a Team capable of withstanding all types!

I signed up. My team might need a little tweaking but it seems okay at the moment.

While I do rotate my Pokemon often, I'm too lazy to build a new proper team, so I'm just using Pokemon from my rotation once more.

And no team can do that, so don't worry so much. This is all for fun. Besides, as Captain Picard puts it:

I really should get a team ready...

As do I.
I've got three Physical Attackers, two Special Attackers and a mediocre Supporter. I need some Rapid Spin, some walls for both Attack types, better supporters, another Special Attacker (I'm thinking Analytic Beheeyem), an EV trained Speed Boost Baton Pass Scolipede (I'll trade for it with an EV trained Poison Point Physical Attacker Scolipede :)) and maybe some Weather Starters that DON'T rely on the Weather TMs.

BTW, Mega Blaziken is out.

Are there tiers?

Tiers would complicate things. I figure it's simpler to make a ban list and have the rest of the Pokemon be fair game.

Anyone think we'll be able to get 3 more participants? 16 would be such a nicer number to work with.

Or you could kick someone out. :lol

Unless any of us know people in particular willing to play that haven't signed up, I'm not so sure we can get three more. Maybe one. Or hey, prove me wrong, I don't mind!
