How do you determine your favorite Sentai series?
 

I'm curious, how do you determine your favorite Sentai series and what order to rank them in? Do you rank them by how much you enjoyed them on the initial viewing or by how much you rewatch them?

The way I have been ranking my top 10 series are this:

Dai
Kaku
Geki
Car
Aba
GoGoV
Gokai
Time
Jet
Zyu

However, I was just thinking about it and I haven't watched a single episode of GekiRanger since the series finished, and I've only watched the series once. On the other hand, I have watched ZyuRanger in full 11 times and tend to watch episodes from the show yearly (like I do with Kaku and Dai). Does that mean that I should have Zyu ranked as #3? After all, wouldn't watching it more than Geki-Jet mean I like it more than those 7 series? Hell, I haven't even watched Time and Aba since 2008 as I've been holding off for them to be fully subbed before I watch them again (something I am now doing with Car and GoGoV).

Anyway, as I said, I am curious as to how you rank your favorite series.

Good question and I dont have a real answer for that :lol

I just rank them in the order how much I got out of those respective shows. Be it the Characters, Story or something entirely different. One thing all of them have in common though is that they resonate with me on an emotional level.

This is my Top 10 right now:

Shinkenger for example is one of those shows that resonate with me more on an emotional level. Its a flawed show but it was my first Sentai that I saw week to week and something about the characters, the setting and the overall story just hit me in the right place during the right time.

Simply by how much I enjoy them. Nothing more and nothing less.

I determine my favorite by how compelled i am to watch the next episode mixed with my initial excitement about the series in general.

As it stands my favorite is Kyoryuger. I could not wait to see the next episode and was talking about it to my wife and friend almost to the point where i am sure that they just wanted me to shut up. But i was ready for the series when it was announced and fell in love with the suits and mech. It helped that i wasn't built up and let down by the show.

I considered making a list, but really, my favorite is Gekiranger. I've seen other series, but really, Geki is the only one I've seen multiple times.

How I determine it isn't a science, really. It's really just how much I enjoy it. I'm not going to take points off a series because it's special effects are sub par or bright and flashy. It's just how much it was able to draw me in.

Like other people I enjoy the show by how much I enjoy it. My top three being Shinkenger, Dairanger, and Go-Busters.

Tensou Sentai Goseiger drew me in because of the cast. It was the first Sentai I ever watched and after years of watching Power Rangers I didn't quite know what to expect. But I fell in love with Alata, Hyde, Agri, Eri, and especially Moune. As though you didn't know the last one on your own. Brajira is still my favorite Sentai villain and one I wish they would bring back more often as Sentai's version of Shocker.
Kyoryuger was the same. Especially when I saw Lady Candelira in all her brilliant Haruka Tomatsu singing Joy Joy. And with ToQger? The same thing.

For me it's the cast.

Sentai isn't a franchise I really enjoy as a whole - which is ironic I guess as I LOVE Power Rangers - but I fell in love with Goseiger as it took everything bad about sentai and made it good and took everything I enjoyed and made it even better. Ironically though, although early days, I haven't really been enjoying Goseiger nearly as much a second time around.

I've never watched a sentai more than once, at least not in its entirety and for me I think a mark of true favourite is a series, film, book etc you can come back to time and time again and love it all over again.

For the longest time I said Shinkenger was my favourite sentai but every attempt at rewatching has only made me hate Genta more, and find the show even more boring.

Story, suit design, and cast arrangement I guess?

Usually, it's a mixture of emotional value, my overall enjoyment and the objective quality of the show. Some are higher despite not being the best just because I had tons of fun watching them, some of them are lower despite being very important for my "Sentai history" because I don't enjoy them as much anymore. While some of them change from time to time, the upper row has a certain order that stayed the same so far.

Atm, my Top 10 are these:
1. Goseiger (strong emotional connection)
2. Kyoryuger (from the year I came back to watching Sentai)
3. Toqger (so far)
4. Gekiranger
5. Go-Busters
6. Megaranger
7. Gokaiger (first Tokusatsu Cosplay)
8. Shinkenger (Sentai that made me return to the franchise)
9. Go-Onger
10. Magiranger (first Sentai ever)

I base it off the motif, the way the story is built up to the finale, and the rangers.

For me it's not so much a top 10 but a top 3.

The rest of the shows I've watched(Jetman, Dairanger*, Magiranger, Go-Onger, Shinkenger, Goseiger, Gokaiger, Kyoryuger) vary in rankings depending on my mood and how recently I've watched them. For example I'd say Magiranger would be at #5 right now thanks to the recent LWW when it had been lower on the list these past few years.

*Dairanger I dropped at episode 25.

I determine my favourite series by how much I like the 3-6 (or more) main Rangers, how much the theme (such as Magiranger's hope, or Gokaiger's heroism) means to me, and how much I love the designs for the season.

For me, the designs are nice as a bonus, but if a series is outstanding, I can enjoy a show with designs I don't like. (Goseiger) Someone else already said this, but any show that consistently makes me want to watch the next episode right away is one I'll consider a favorite. The ingredients to what I enjoy from a series vary from time to time, but the core is always that I enjoy watching the main cast of characters - though having a cool villain to hate is also a plus.

I tend to enjoy serialized stories over episodic ones, but if I enjoy the characters, any lack of a long running story won't bother me. I have to really like the people on screen to consider them worthy of being called favorites because, especially with Sentai, lead characters need to be engaging.
