Roberto Orci Discusses the New Power Rangers Movie & Continuity
New MMPR Movie in "continuity" with the rest of the series!? Cameos expected!
http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/...riginal-series |
I guess they will pull in a Star Trek 2009 on us by having this being a new timeline.

Roberto Orci never brought up Super Sentai. It would be cool if the movie had some elements from Zyuranger or maybe a nod or two to Super Sentai similar what RPM did.
|
This is okay, I'm more interested in the cast and plot and designs, but this is okay.
And reading some of the comments on IGN, man "Super Sentai is for adults." |

This is good news, then. :) |
Cameos? Oh goody. JDF.

I think this was a great interview and can put a lot of fans' worries to rest for the time being.

Maybe not entirely related but I was wondering, if they do merchandising, who will handle it? BoA? BoJ? A collaboration?
|
Bandai America will likely do toys for the movies and Bandai Japan will likely use Bandai America toys if the movie gets a Japanese release. Bandai Japan release the Bandai America toys for Godzilla 2014 in Japan.
It would be cool if we got other toy companies like NECA and Hot Toys doing stuff for the movie. |
A movie partner has not been announced.
Saban Brands contract with Bandai of America runs through 2016. If the movie isn't released until 2017, a new contract with Bandai of America would have to be drafted up. |
I can see how it doesn't neccesarily have to be a reboot. Considering the history of the series, it can't be too hard to come up with some technobabble that essentially means "The MMPR powers have been recreated, but for whatever reason they have to be given to new people and not any of the existing MMPR".
|
I was kind of hoping this would be its own continuity, but having it be in the same universe as the show...just, no.
|
If it's going to be its own thing while still existing in the same universe, then this'll basically be an excuse to keep the Mighty Morphin'/Zyuranger suit designs relevant as more than just "The first Power Rangers" as well as have the full team be kept around in case Saban wants to use them in future crossover installments, since doing so with the original cast would be impossible for them now.
|
I wood love to see this be in the same universe. Have some past Rangers like Tommy tell them about the past of Power Rangers. Help them become the new MMPR Rangers. I very much hope this is in the same universe i think that wood be grate to see.

Orci taking this seriously
This is a serious move for something most people don't think heavily about. Outside of people who care, the world at large doesn't think much about Power Rangers and really take more than a little time to slam people who do. It isn't all that surprising that Orci is giving this some definite thought about how this should occur. People in similar positions as him think about even the little details when doing a picture based on a long and popular franchise, be it Star Trek or Power Rangers. If the article is true to what Orci is thinking, then he'll remain true to what has happened, but take stock on the fact that what has happened isn't necessarily what everyone else wants. What is more surprising is that Saban isn't wanting ANYONE to step all over his property! Does this man even look at his programming anymore? What is curious about some of this is the talk about having an "arc"; a story. This is a wise move as the Megaforce opening, "Mega Mission", was just a rip of "Day of the Dumpster." We don't need the classic first episode blown over into a two-hour free-for-all that's only good for spiting on people and making its money back. We need to examine Mighty Morphin' in its entirety and consider taking multiple cues from multiple episodes, not just a wholly original story and not just a modern take on the classics. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see some originality here. I want a fresh and powerful movie that appeals to everyone, not just a bunch of drek that makes the public happy but leaves the true fans aggravated that another property was subjected to the remake machine.

The movie is likely set in a different timeline. It would be cool if they make the movie set in 1993 and go retro on everyone.
|
The way I'm reading it, we still don't really have an answer to the continuity question. I'm glad that they're considering it, but that's all that was said.
|
I'll laugh if they have an answer to the "new powers". Who knows, it may or may not.

Since it's from one of the guys that did the Star Trek reboot, I can see them possibly doing what they did with that franchise.
If it really is a MMPR movie, I'd guess maybe it could go kind of like the original movie in that it's basically an 'alternate universe' version of what happened in the beginning of Season 3. Or maybe something happens, like a villain from the Rangers' past like Goldar is revealed to have survived the Zordon Wave of In Space and wants revenge, managing to find a way back in time to try and change history, freeing up Rita early on, or bringing Lord Zedd into things right away. Another idea, maybe making it so the original Rangers never were friends and never met, but then something somehow brings them together. So like all the Rangers come from different schools, slightly different backgrounds from each other and obviously hang with different kinds of friends, but something changes it all. Whereas before, Kimberly, the popular girl, would never associate with Billy, the nerd, something connects them all and leads them to become Power Rangers again in this new universe. |
I've got a great idea for the movie, no alternate timelines, no cameos, no attempt to tie it all together so fanboys go mental (I makes me cackle with glee to see obsessives try to validate their theories on the pr universe). Just take the tropes, a few good jokes and make a good fucking movie. Screw the show, the only people who follow the entire franchise are going anyway, they're nerds, this needs to be 100% original origin or it will drive people away.
Just because Star Trek does alt universes IT DOESNT MEAN WE NEED THAT HERE!!!! If this looks like the TV show, it will bomb. It needs to appeal to mainstream audiences, not uber geeks. Sorry to sound harsh to everybody but this is the start of a franchise of mass release films (hopefully) not an uber fan made wish list of mmpr fantasies. |

Super Sentai is the source material. Without it, there would be no Power Rangers. I like how RPM did a nod to Go-Onger with Project G.O-O.N.G.E.R. By Zyranger elements, I mean something like Rita gets steal up back in her jar by the end of the movie similar what happen in Zyuranger just to play safe.

Without Spider-man, there'd be no Super Sentai. Without Daredevil, there'd be no Ninja Turtles. Without half of DC's main heroes, there'd be no Watchmen. Without Microman and Diaclone, there'd be no Transformers. Do all these things need to pay homage to those that preceeded them all the time? No. Especially when the relations are superficial at best. There's no point in referencing Sentai when most Sentai fans would probably just be upset by it, and most people wouldn't even get it. Just keep them seperate. Power Rangers was envisioned as being entirely seperate from the Sentai it "adapted." Wouldn't it make more sense to stay true to that idea rather than needlessly reference irrelevant details? |
