Shifts within 36 years
 

I open this thread to see what people can remember were big changes to this franchise. For starters, Dynaman and Go-busters are the pioneers in choice of fabric(Dynaman was the first to don spandex, Go-busters has recently been the first to break out of spandex). Also, Bioman was the first to have two heroines.

Zyuranger had the first "evil" Ranger, as well as the first true 6th Ranger. Dairanger and OhRanger utilized kid-rangers.

It's also fun to look back and see what shows paid homage to previous shows. Like Abaranger pays homage to Zyuranger, both feature dinosaur motiffs and an evil Ranger that eventually fights for good.

Goseiger gave us Angels. Gosei Red gave us Cross-Dressing. Zyurangers gave birth to Power Rangers. Gokaiger gave birth to fan-rage about three days ago. Dairanger was forgotton thanks to American marketing. But because of American adaptations Sentai found new life over seas.

Good 35 years, I'd think.

Here are some shifts:

* J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai introduced the team cannon (Big Bomber).
* Battle Fever J was the first to introduce a combining final weapon (Penta Force). It also introduced black (Battle Kenya) as a Super Sentai color. (The other unique color was orange (Battle Cossack), but it was never used again.) As it was the first to introduce a giant robot (Battle Fever Robo), it was considered the first Super Sentai until 1994.
* Denshi Sentai Denjiman was the first to used colored visors on the team helmets (suits used in Goranger, J.A.K.Q. and Battle Fever J had small eye holes). It also introduced the transforming robot (Daidenjin) in the series.
* Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan was the first Super Sentai trio. It was also the only all-male team. In addition, it introduced the combining robot (Sun Vulcan Robo).
* Dai Sentai Goggle-V was the last Super Sentai team to use scarves (not including Akibaranger). X1 Mask's outfit in Maskman had a scarf, but he was not a permanent member.
* Choudenshi Bioman introduced the robot helper (Peebo). It was also the last Super Sentai series to have a permanent roster change mid-season.
* Choushinsei Flashman introduced the secondary robot (Flash Titan).
* Hikari Sentai Maskman introduced the first robot formed out of five vehicles (Great Five).
* Choujuu Sentai Liveman was the first Super Sentai series to have a female Blue (Blue Dolphin). It also introduced the super robot formed out of two robots (Super Live Robo), as well as the first animal-based mecha (Land Lion).
* Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman was the first sibling-based Super Sentai.
* Choujin Sentai Jetman introduced the first and only Super Sentai wedding.
* Ninja Sentai Kakuranger was the first Super Sentai led by a female member, also resulting in the first non-Red leader.
* Chouriki Sentai Ohranger was the first to recognize Goranger and J.A.K.Q. in the Super Sentai series.
* Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger was the first series to be completely shot on video instead of analog film (Mirai Sentai Timeranger only had the opening and ending sequences shot on video).

Goggle-V was the last series to have cloth outfits(or whatever the outfits were made out of back then). Zyuranger was the first series to have sentient mecha.

Ninja Storm was the team to start out with three, the first series to be shot in New Zealand, the first series to be run completely by Disney, the first series to have two Blue and Red Rangers (technically), and the first series to have a female Blue Ranger.

GoRanger was the first Sentai.

If you wanna be technical, it was actually Battle Fever J, up until 1994 when GoRanger and J.A.K.Q. were included as a part of Super Sentai.

Liveman was the first Sentai to start with three Rangers and end with five.

Umm...Gekiranger was the first Sentai to use a non-standard color as a main team member since Battle Fever?

Gekiviolet was the only purple Ranger at all, wasn't he? I can't remember another one.

That depends on whether or not you consider Wolzard to be a Ranger (Or you go the Gokai route, with only Wolzard Fire considered one).

Personally: I count Wolzard as a corrupted version of Wolzard Fire, not a real ranger. Purple wasn't his true color. If any of that makes sense.

However, DEKARANGER had cross dressing before that, when one of the male members went undercover as a woman

And then there was the episode where the guys are paralyzed by the Banki of the Week. Girls dressed them up as drag mannequins so to hide them.

Now see, that sounds fun to watch. Good luck getting away with that in Power Rangers. For serious.

I think Lightspeed Rescue had one of the Rangers crossdressing briefly.

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy is the first Power Rangers series to star a future softcore porn star ;) (Cerina Vincent)
(NOTE: While she's not really a softcore porn star, the movie she was in was more or less considered it. Amy Jo Johnson also was topless in a movie but it wasn't considered anything more than an R rated movie IIRC)

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy also featured the first Power Ranger death (Kendrix). The second is Alex in Power Rangers Time Force episode 01, sorta.

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy was also the first to not require martial arts ability in casting (though it was recommended).

Wouldn't Titanium count as a Silver Ranger and not an actual color?
