Wait, didn't OH Ranger almost kill Sentai in japan?

Yup.

But that's attributed to the fact the show had a rather serious theme at the beginning, but due to the terrorist attack and the fact their leader's views (he would be granted special powers by an ancient civilization and OhRanger's story was they were granted special powers by an ancient civilization) caused the show to make a dramatic 180 in the theme, which didn't resonate well (and probably because anything military was bad bad bad after that).

Yes and no. To be fair Sentai almost ended after Fiveman because of how poorly that did and Jetman was supposedly going to be the last one. But when that did well they decided to keep going.

Ohranger did do poorly though and thus kinda did almost kill it off. Ohranger was an anniversary series and the original idea of the show was to be one big dark war epic. And it started that way and bits of that still remain throughout the show. However unfortunately for Ohranger Japan hit a rough patch and because of events like the Hanshin earthquake and the Sarin gas attacks, people were kinda turned off of anything that was dark, serious, and connected to anything dealing with war, terroism, and invasion. So Ohranger was rewritten a bit and made the show very weird and confused, and thus alienated enough fans that the ratings suffered.

Luckily toy sales helped save the show enough to warrant Carranger, which due to it's popularity for being goofy led to Sentai continuing.

I've always been interested in OhRanger's original premise before the terrorist attacks that caused it to take a massive change in premise and theme.
I'm also rather curious about how bad the quality drops after the change, but I'm more interested in the former.

Don't forget they also have released the first 27 episodes of Gingaman.

As for Sentai, the 90s were the best because they were doing experimentation with the show after Jetman. If it weren't for that, there would be no Zyu, Dai, and Kaku. There would be no Car, Ginga, GoGoV, or Time. It would just be as generic as it was in the 80s had it made it that long.

I love Kakuranger. It's probably 2nd in my heart after Gekiranger.
But aside from being led by White, what were they experimenting with?

I'd assume the whole ninja theme with the addes goofy Adam West Batman like moments.

Comedy. Kakuranger was the first "comedy season" in Sentai (that's why we have the storyteller). Without Kakuranger, shows like Carranger or Go-Onger probably wouldn't even exist, basically because comedy had never been the main focus of a show.


Also, yay for Ohranger finally getting subs!!!

The 90's were trying new things in Sentai. Jetman was the last traditional Sentai. All of them tried something different and Kakuranger was the one to made it all about Japanese pop culture and folklore. The Storyteller is part of that. It is not unique for be comical. Fiveman and Jetman have just about the same amount of humor in them.

More people should read Kakuranger's translations notes. They're not necessary to enjoy the show, but they are very insightful to what made Kakuranger unique.

Yes it kinda is. You mentioned the translation notes and that is exactly whats written in them

The first arc of Kakuranger puts a big emphasis on comedy, and often pokes fun at both the heroes and villains. The Storyteller is there to help remind the show's original audience that this is supposed to be a comedy, and you should be laughing at the antics of these misfit heroes and villains. Remember that prior to Kakuranger, Sentai had at most comedic scenes or episodes. The idea of a strictly comedic story arc in Sentai was something the audience at the time probably wouldn't have expected. It was probably reasonable to worry that viewers wouldn't quite understand what the show was doing without (literally) a character present to point it out.

I'm always happy when a sub group treads new territory and Ohranger is one of the older series that I've always wanted to see. Can't wait to check this out.

Watched the first 8 eps of OhRanger and I really like it. It's interesting to see the amount of bravado and arrogance that Oh-Red has. I'm sure that won't bite him in the ass at some point. :)

And the villains are actually rather evil here.
