Sentai rebooted
What if they reboot the franchise ?
|
They technically did so with Go-Busters. It was a break in the fandom where many old fans left and new people came to watch it.
|
And alot of older fans and kids jumped ship so they went back to the old formula with Kyoryuger.
With the way Sentai works I dont think a reboot like comics do would be necessary at all. Sentai already starts from scratch every year and the past shows are only mentioned on special occasions. |

You can't exactly reboot a franchise when every year it is a new series.

There is no solid continuity, since the crossover movies are just fun little side stories whose only canon contribution is the occasional new mecha. |

The only real change that happened in the last few years in Sentai was this:
With Gokaiger, they made a "gimmick" where there was something that interacted with all the toys. It proved to be very popular and very successful. With GoBuster, they abandoned that gimmick and tried to take a less light-hearted approach and it failed in every aspect - kids didn't buy the toys, and no one watches Super Sentai anyways. So with Kyoryuger, they brought the gimmick back (Zyudenchi). It worked. ToQGer brought the Resshas - it worked. Ninninger will have Shurikens. It will work. That's as close to "reboot" as you get. |
I don't think a completely new formula or direction towards a different demographic will happen with sentai. It's not like they are going to switch back to evenings and air more adult themes.
And like Kickback said, the gimmicks was pretty a reboot in the toy line direction and were featured in the show. |
It's possible that they might to a retooling of Gorenger for the 50th anniversary. I don't think it will reboot the franchise entirely but it might try to draw parallels to the beginning of the franchise. The costumes might be similar and the story might be similar, but they won't take away the giant combining robot, the costume material currently used, or the CGI effects.

A Goranger movie similar to Kamen Rider: The First will most likely bomb. Movies that bring back classic character and give them a modern update seem to fail over there. Gavan 2012, Kikaider Reboot and Gamera: The Brave bombed at the box office in Japan. Godzilla 2014 was lucky enough to do well in Japan unlike those films.

It's possible they could bring back old gimmicks ?
|
What old gimmicks are you referring to? Like gimmicks to buy or gimmicks in the filming making style? I don't think gimmicks were really a thing during the older seasons. The earliest gimmick I can think of were the power animals from Gaoranger
|
I think any gimmick.
|
The collecting gimmick thing seem to started with Go-Onger from what I can remember with the Engine Souls. The older seasons never had a major collecting gimmick to them from what I can remember besides Gaoranger.
Sentai and Rider needs gimmicks these days in order for these shows to be made. Go-Busters had no gimmick and became the lowest selling Sentai in years. |

From the 80's and 90's.
|
well diaranger/thunder zords had the tiny pilots that road on top of the mecha/zords and could fit inside diaren-oh's/thunder megazords's chest
that was a cool gimmick for 5 seconds until the little figures where lost in the carpet i am having a hard time thinking of other gimmicks from earlier toy lines |

i like using gaokong (the red repaint of the green gorilla to make gaoknight) gaogiraffe, gaotiger, the sheild half of gaoelephant, on top of the large gaolion to make what i call gaojoust as it looks like a knight with a lance riding a horse |

I mean if mechas could follow the concepts from 80's and 90's.Let's just say a old school vibe.
|
^ What do you mean by "old school", you mean in design or in the way they combine or what?
|
The way of combine and design.

I want another Gaoranger style mech. with all the diecast and fantastic interchangeability.
|
I think mechs from the 80s and 90s are blocky and plain. Newer mechs have more personality that reflects the gimmick of the show. How can you not love kyoryuger's or even hurricaneger's main mech?. But like sun Vulcan or even live boxer are plain and I don't think they would be well received with today's patrons.
|
yeah the older mechs where basicly a giant boxy brick
even daizyujin and dairen-oh are basically plastic bricks even though i love them but only due to nostalgia if they came out today probably would not have the same feeling even though dairen-oh had a nice transformation and i think that might beable to work with a new series have a main central mech that is a triple changer then have different auxiliary mech teams that form armor for the central unit. even have the armor teams be able to form armor for a second central mech much like won tiger i could get behind that but have aux mech teams of 3 or 4 just for armor would get pricey though |
The older mechas can move a little fast than current ones. The current ones barely can move.
|
show or toys? because the older toys basically had 45* ratchets in the arms
and with the shows becuase of CGI the newer mechs are shown to move a lot more freely and quickly. geki tohja being one of the quickest and most agile combined robos |
Gekitohja maybe but what about mechas like shurikenjin ? they are too heavy.
|
The style of movement of the gattai really depends on the season. Gekiranger had a fast moving one, so did Hurricaneger and Dekaranger, but Shinkenger's was a giant samurai and samurai aren't known for their super quick fighting style. Gokaiger's could move fast and it was comprised of all the mechs you are saying can't move fast.
If you are saying the actual suits are too heavy, then there may be some merit to that, but looking at 80's sentai, those things barely moved. They would form, pose, fight for maybe 20 seconds, then do a finisher and that was it. And the older seasons had the gattai move more like robots instead of fighters, so their movements were slower and more mechanical. I still think if an 80's style mech was used today, it would not excite the fans and target audience. Kids like more complex toys (and honestly, so do collectors) and having a gattai that only has two pieces would be a bit of a let down. So no, I couldn't get behind the idea of bringing back the 80's and early 90's style gattai. For example, Go-Busters had a simple gattai and it did not sell well at all. |
Yeah but was something new kind and wasn't a 80's and 90's style gattai.
|
It was different, but it was also simple and didn't catch the attention of the kids. A gattai that would be only 2 or 3 pieces could get the same or a worse reception.
|
They try a new thing and didn't work.

The gattai of 80's and 90's was simple too ?
