Favorite "old school" Sentai?
 

I always see lists of best sentai, but a lot of it seems focused on newer stuff. So, what would you say your top 5/10/whatever old school sentai are? For the sake of this discussion, "old school" refers to anything from the 90s and earlier.

All of the 90's because 90's Sentai is the best Sentai.

Also, it's kind of hard to judge many shows before that as there's very little subbed sadly. That's probably why they aren't talked about much. I will say that the first episode of Gorenger is fun if you're ever curious of how it all began.

...I guess Megaranger and Kakuranger. The other series I've watched/tried to watch just didn't do much for me. A lot of them feel too episodic, and I know, that sounds really stupid considering it's a franchise that's episodic, but series like Liveman and Sun Vulcan are just so dull.

I'm not normally the type of person to fast forward in a show and find the fights, but some of these 90's and earlier shows have me considering it...

I'm thinking of trying Maskman.

If I may I would like to recommend Flashman and Liveman and Turboranger from the 80s.

From what I've seen (Jetman through Kakuranger) I'm most partial to Zyuranger, myself. The more fantasy-based tone is really fun, Bandora is a great villain, and I still think it has some of the best mech scenes in Sentai history. If you have any MMPR nostalgia it really kicks the enjoyment factor up a few notches, too.

Dairanger, Zyuranger put me to sleep on episode 3.

Dairanger is also a lot of fun. Honestly, I really enjoyed the three Sugimura series I've seen. I really should get on Ohranger after the fansub is finished, although I'm a little nervous because of its legendary production problems.

Hmm, A Sentai with religious over/undertones?...I can segway back on topic from this. Zyuranger > Goseiger. :p


But seriously, Zyuranger is a good show. It's more about plot than character and the plot centers around god...that takes the form of a giant robot made of dinosaurs. As you do.

I think Zyuranger, Dairanger, and Kakuranger make a nice little trilogy based in different mythologies. Zyuranger is Western mythology, Dairanger is Chinese mythology, and Kakuranger is Japanese mythology.

I mainly want to watch Ohranger because of it's production problems. I find it fascinating. Plus, I think every show deserves a chance. Popular opinion doesn't always prove to be the right opinion.

I love how much of an ass Daizyuzin is. He's such an old testament giant robot god. There's a point in the show where Daizyuzin orders Geki to kill his brother so Daizyuzin can get his Godzilla hat back.

Considering the 90s is my favorite era of Sentai, pretty much that. Specific shows being Megaranger and Dairanger.

Bioman for me. The English dub for the show is good enough for me to sit through it.

It exists. It's all on YouTube, all 51 episodes. If I remember correctly, it was dubbed in the late 80's for the Philippines (much like the hard to come by Kamen Rider dubs).

I was talking about the Philippines English dub from the 80's, not the Saban dub that Saban plan to do in the 80's that never got released.

Dynaman was the one Saban was trying to do.

I really enjoy a lot of the stuff from the nineties overall. That is if we are talking about "old school" Sentai.

Dynaman was dubbed on the USA Network's Night Flight and Saban had nothing to do with it. Before Saban's failed dub of Bioman, there was Stan Lee's Sun Vulcan show that he try to pitch to HBO in the early 80's that never happened.

No, Dynaman was a parody dub on the USA Network. Saban started by trying to do Bioman before finally succeeding with Zyuranger.

So far, Jetman and Zyuranger are my two favorite shows. I started watching Dairanger almost immediately after finishing Zyuranger, and it almost killed my then newly-discovered love of Sentai. Still, I want to watch it again at some point, since I love the suits and mech designs. I didn't like Kakuranger - the only enjoyable things were the yokai and the narrator. Megaranger was also pretty boring. I really want to watch Ohranger and Carranger sometime. Those were the two series I watched the most as a kid. I loved Signalman (or whatever his PR counterpart's name is) and PR Zeo had my favorite mecha and enemy designs.

To the person who said older sentai is too slow for them: interestingly enough, I found more modern sentai to be too fast. One of my favorite things about Zyuranger is how it started off with two episodes introducing the team, two episodes with the team getting their weapons, and then two episodes where the team forms DaiZyuJin. As opposed to Ninninger, which I just watched a few days ago, where all of that happened in the first episode. Between the super fast pace and all of the CGI, I can't get into it.

Battle Fever J is one of my favorites. I can't wait to watch it with good video quality.

My absolute favorite is easily Kakuranger. I love the designs and how the whole story progresses. All the social commentary in this show is also quite a site to behold and makes this show alot more than what it might looks like at first glance.

I love the 80's and 90's.

It's understandable. It's not that the series is too slow, it's that they're just quite dull. I'm doing my best to watch Liveman, but there just isn't any story despite the series trying their hardest to act like there's one.

Kakuranger, Megaranger, and Liveman. If I had to take it out to five, I would add Maskman and Jetman in there, but the three are my solid choices.

But then again, the only other one I've seen is Dairanger and this is my least favorite Sentai, together with Boukenger. So yeah.

It's hard. Older sentai is a bit too monster of the week, newer sentai is way too flashy and fast paced. I've been focusing on the middle stuff mostly because of that, and have been having some luck (I seriously recommend Jetman if you haven't watched it yet) but i'm not really sure what to do after i'm done with these. I'll probably go old school because i'm mostly interested in Toku because of the suit battles - CGI is a big reason why I can't get into newer stuff. It's understandable that you'd prefer newer though

There are more post-90s sentai than there are pre-90s, so i'd say it's safe to consider it "old school." Well, maybe Gingaman is pushing it a bit, but I don't think you could argue that Jetman, Zyuranger, and Dairanger aren't old school.

I don't feel like Jetman was that good of a series, to be honest. The events that it's remembered and commended for only occur in 5 episodes out of 51. It has very little substance outside of Gai's brash attitude, which he drops after the first 5 episodes beyond a snarky remark here and there.

My biggest beef with Jetman is how Kaori became a prize for the male members and Ako was kind of forgotten. Raita had a girl that wanted to be with him, but he fought for Kaori, Gai fought for Kaori, and Ryu rejected her (even with all her attempts) until he watched Rei die. Then they got married at the end of the season.

I think if the female characters were better written, it could have driven the story a little more. The villains really progressed the story, IMO; kind of like how the Shadow Line progressed the story in ToQGer.

I haven't watched many of the of the old school sentai's but the ones that I did like are liveman, kakuranger, maskman, to a degree zyuranger, and was gaoranger in the 90's?

No, Gaoranger is from 2001.

I noticed that too, which is funny to me, since I find Ako both more enjoyable as a character AND more attractive.

Well, let's look at Megaranger, a series I personally found to have very little substance. Red acts like an idiot, everybody else takes everything more seriously. Then they fight the enemy. If the enemy is Yugande, he whines and then has to come up with a way to redeem himself. Rinse and repeat. I only made it about halfway through because I got so bored I couldn't finish.

Jetman is interesting to me because of the character dynamics. Raita and Gai are both into Kaori, who is into Ryuu. Gai and Ryuu are constantly at odds with each other, both over Kaori and the Jetmen in general. Poor Ako is left out. The villains are all also trying to one-up each other the whole time. I like the dynamics, and haven't seen any other Sentai with as much character drama. (then again, I haven't really seen a lot. Zyuranger is the only one i've completed, while Jetman and Megaranger are the only other ones i've made it past episode 20. I've seen 9 episodes of Kakuranger, 6 of Gokaiger and Battle Fever J, 2 of Dairanger, and 1 of Goranger, JAKQ, Timeranger, Carranger, ToQGer, Ninninger, and Gekiranger.)

I only really named Megaranger because the question didn't leave me much room, honestly.

I found Jetman's dynamic to be too intrusive. The love quadrangle got grating and it felt like the characters were too oblivious (And Gai's declaration of love to Kaori's face and then her proceeding to just string him was awful). Gai loved Kaori, Kaori loved Ryu, Ryu can't get over Maria, and Raita randomly loved Kaori, too, but they bring it up a whopping two times before it becomes irrelevant. The problem was that they basically made the characters' stories revolve around one of the most dull characters in the franchise. Kaori is such a vapid stepford smiler whose barely has anything interesting going for her.

The villain dynamic was more interesting, but it was wasted, since once Tranza got into power, it was just a giant downfall from there. I enjoyed all 4 of them, but Grey didn't do much until his end and Maria felt like set dressing. Radiguet and Tranza were the best of the two (Radiguet more so). But Radiguet didn't really get interesting until his brief time as a human and Tranza was just more of a mover, rather than an interesting character.
