The Survival Horror games thread, talk about Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark or anything alike here.

Long time fan of the genre and wanted to show some love for it here on Tokunation, whats your favorite series in the genre?

Yoooo! Haven't played anything in a while because my PS2 won't work anymore, but I played a lot of Survival horror in my last years of school.
My favorite series is Fatal Frame, but I also enjoyed Silent Hill and Resident Evil.

Fatal Frame is a great series, although I've only played the first so far.

I've played all three PS2 games and the 3DS spin-off, some bits of Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Deep Crimson Butterfly. It's a pity that most of them are Japan-exclusive these days.

I feel ya, I follow the series as I plan to play them all when I have the time and the Wii U one looks great, wish it would have been brought over.

I love Resident Evil!! Silent Hill has been the only game to actually give me the creeps. Something about the silence and then the static with nothing around you in your immediate sight just creeps me out. Also, would FNAF be a part of this genre?

My favourite games of survivval horror are the Silent hill series, I have only recently gotten into the Resident evil series, My favourites of both of these series are the second titles of each.

Same, I know what you mean Silent Hill just has a lot more disturbing imagery than RE as well imo. I suppose FNAF could be lumped in as well, albeit a little unconventional in the genre.

Can't say my favorite SH, but RE2 is definitely my favorite in that series.

I would definitely recommend silent hill 2, it is a wonderful game. Although I would try and find the ps2 version, the hd collection of silent hill 2 and 3 is a hot mess of problems.

Way ahead of you I've had my PS2 copy of SH2 since launch, and I did end up buying the HD collection. Atleast I got it for PS3 and its not AS awful as the 360, either way I agree the PS2 version is the way to go.

Good to know you are already well ahead on that, I would also say do the same thing for Silent hill 3, ps2 option all the way cause the ps3 version is super not great.

For me I consider the hd ports for Silent hill 2 and 3 as the worse hd ports of any game franchise ever.

I've played the 4 main SH games (all their original versions), but haven't ventured into Downpour, Shattered Memories, Homecoming Etc. What are your thoughts on the games outside the main series?

Ah I see I didn't catch that you had already played the first 4 silent hill games, my apologies about that.

For the games outside of the first 4 they are significantly weaker products, odd gameplay mechanic that fit along with some of the ideas of silent hill, re uses of concepts of from the previous games too much and just lack the same appeal that the other did due to aforementioned issues along with a myriad of other things.

In short the later half of the Silent hill franchise is not as good as the first half, in my opinion.

No worries, should have been more clear. That seems to be the general feeling fans have about the games. Watching gameplay and what not the only one that sticks out fairly positively to me is Shattered Memories.

It'a all good man, we cleared up the issue on that.

Yeah in general the second half of the silent hill games aren't considered that great and with Shattered memories while the psychology aspect are interesting the fact that there is no means of fighting off the enemies in that game make it less interesting than the others since you plan of strategy is always going to be the same.

However I am interested in Silent Hills and will give that a fair shake.

I have hopes for Silent Hills as well, will see how that goes. It's hard to tell what it'll be like even with the demo.

Fatal Frame, and I wish I had a Wii U to play the newest Fatal Frame game.

On the Silent Hill topic, my favorite is propably SH 3, which happens to also be my first SH I owned and the one that scared me the most. Funnily enough, people sometimes tell me that I look a bit like the game's protagonist, Heather.
As for the first and fourth game, as well as Homecoming, I've only seen them as Let's plays (happen to have a friend who does LPs and is a huge Silent Hill fan), but personally, I found SH 4 extremely annoying and Homecoming was kinda meh.
I also own SH 2 and Shattered Memories. As for SH 2, I consider it a bit overrated. I liked it, but I just didn't find it to be as amazing as most people say it is. Shattered Memories has a rather unusual gameplay for Silent Hill and I absolutely hated the fact that you couldn't fight the monsters, but I really liked the overall story and concept behind it.
Didn't like the Silent Hills P.T., but as the game will probably look different, I'll see what the actual game will look like.

As for Resident Evil, my favorite is Resident Evil 4 (I have the PS2 version). I also played Darkside Chronicles, Umbrella Chronicles and RE 6 and own RE 5, 1 and Zero. (As for RE 5: It didn't work properly on my computer, but I played it at a friend's place). While most people say that the series went downhill with or after the 4th one, I found myself to enjoy the newer ones a tad bit more (mostly for gameplay reasons), but I liked all of them in some way or another.

My favorite Fatal Frame is the 3rd game, The Tormented, but I also love Crimson Butterfly (2nd one) and its remake. I also found Spirit Camera for the 3DS rather cool, but it was waaaayyy too short and using the DS camera is a pain because it's so dark in my apartment and artificial light doesn't really help.

For some reason I find Shattered Memories enjoyable even without fighting the monsters. I've actually thought about trying out Spirit Camera.

Well, I gotta say, I rather prefer to hide because I suck at hiding in video games. Somehow I always get found :lol Also, I tend to get lost in bigger areals, so those can be a pain if the monsters follow you.

Spirit Camera sure is worth a try, but make sure your room is well lit, if possible play during the day. The DS camera is somewhat dark already and darkens a bit down for the game, so you might have some trouble getting the AR book to work sometimes.

Thanks for the tips, it's really cheap so I don't see why I couldn't give it a try.

Will any of you here on Tokunation be getting Revelations 2 for PS3/PS4?

Fatal Frame on Wii U is coming to the NA later this year, confirmed from the Nintendo Direct.

I don't like Claries new design... But aside from that I don't know.

I'm not extremely fond of it, you can atleast get her RE2 costume in Raid mode though.

Any news for Europe?

My first experience with the genre was Resident Evil, which I didn't enjoy. I don't much like jumpscares. Which is why I gravitated more towards Silent Hill. I like being psychologically scared, you know?

I don't really like the early Resident Evil games that much either, but that's more because of the horrible camera and gameplay x,D

None at the moment.

I like them both, for different reasons.

Hopefully they release it other places as well, too bad the Wii U is region locked :/
