Oh good, this should have much better quality and care than the Mill Creek releases of Ultraman. I seriously cannot stand the out of sync subs on some of the episodes, incredibly distracting.

That was because that DVD release came from Chaiyo. The original Ultraman show from 1966 already has a blu-ray release in Japan and I doubt Chaiyo is going to use any of those transfers. I would not recommended getting these upcoming sets because they are from Chaiyo and not from Tsuburaya Productions.

Wait a tic, I remember that company now. Big legal dispute with Tsuburaya Productions over the handling of the Ultra series outside Japan. The president or someone claimed Eiji's son, Noboru, signed some sort of bogus contract in the 90s for distribution. They even made some of their own Ultras which got them into some trouble.

Goddamn it, and here I was all excited.

Even with the quality of the last US releases being off, they were good watching for the price. Will be happy to pick up Ultraman Ace for a decent price.

I was looking forward to this, till I realized it was Chaiyo and not Tsuburaya. They're like the Harmony Gold of Ultraman.

I kind of wonder if they are even able to do this. Both legally and financially.

I can answer the first part of that, which in turn will answer the second. Chaiyo was a company Tsuburaya Productions collaborated with for two Ultraman movies back in the mid 70s. When it was looked over, it was full of many errors. Like Ultra Q being titled Ultaman 1. Tsuburaya Prod. and Tsuburaya Enterprises, being used. Neither were ever used by the company.


It's been a massive cluster in the court system for years now. Not helping is it isn't exactly clear what Chaiyo can and cannot do, even to them. They tried making Ultras of their own which resulted in an infringement lawsuit that Tsuburaya won. Merchandise like statues and such is another thing that isn't clear.

TL;DR lots of vague legalese stuff that only a Rashomon-style hearing could solve.

I'm already quite aware of the case, I apologize if I made it seem like I didn't. It's the tangled mess resulting from Chaiyo's BS that makes me skeptical of whether or not they are actually allowed to do this.

I don't expect that the blu-rays or the movies will come to fruition though. I don't even think the DVD box set these bozos announced a long while back came into production either.
