Old KR Gimmicks worth doing again?
With Ghost coming this week, it makes me wonder about KR's next themes in the future.
What if the creators would do some old themes again? They did Kabuto. Maybe... just maybe... since Kiva with the vampire motif, maybe they can do a vampire rider again. Any other examples? I mean in Sentai they did repeat the dinosaur motifs (Zyuranger, Abaranger & Kyoryuger) and the ninjas (Kakuranger, Hurricanger & Ninninger). |
I definitely feel like a Card theme can be used again. I'd love Elementals to be used again like Hibiki that aren't in just 1 Rider. Definitely Monsters like Kiva. I definitely can see them use Insects again. All the parts of Hibiki as different themes would be cool, like Music and Oni. I wouldn't mind Angels/Nephilim again like Agito. They definitely need to hit the Cell Phone and Technology theme of Faiz again with all this modern technology around us would be awesome.

Aren't we more or less getting a theme-reuse now? The Ghost concept echoes Hibiki, Kiva, and (I suspect) Den-O. Gaim echoed Ryuki's Rider War and parallel universe. Most of the Heisei Rider shows have common elements, like the Rider's close ally who isn't fully human.
I suspect Kamen Rider won't get any closer than that to reusing a theme anytime in the foreseeable future. |
Okay, reading this topic, what even is a theme?
Cards aren't a theme, it's a gimmick. Ryuki, Blade & Decade don’t share a theme, they share a gimmick. Insects aren't a theme either, only the Rider-suits are modeled after a grasshopper. You can't call this a theme like with Sentai, because in Sentai everything centers on a single element. For example, Ninjas: The suits look like Ninjas, they fight like Ninjas, and their gimmicks are Ninja-related. Kamen Rider never really has an Insect theme outside of Kabuto maybe where the forms are named after beetles and they have the Zecters, but the Showa Riders are clearly not Insect-themed. They only wear a bug-man costume, that's it. From my point of view most Kamen Rider shows after the Showa-era (maybe except Kuuga and Agito which are similar for obvious reasons) have a unique theme which only pays homage to the origins of Rider by having slightly bug-themed costumes. It’s not their theme though. And no, I don’t want them to reuse themes because that’s something I hate about Sentai, you should be as original as possible in a franchise which has a new show every year. Maybe with a TV-special for a special occasion, but not for a full show. |

Blade was very much card themed... |
They say Ryuki was "zodiac" themed. But I'm rather confused. Yes a majority of the Riders were motored after various animals from the Western (Greco/Roman) and Chinese Horoscopes. But never have I seen antelopes, Rhinoceros, Chameleon, and Devil Ray in any Horoscope alignment. Granted Ai know there's a Chameleon constellation, but the other three I have no clue.
|
Who are "they"?
|
I really can't see how Ryuki could be zodiac themed. It's kind of a stretch just to make tangential constellation connections ("Imperer is Sagittarius! It's totally zodiac!").

Horoscopes Ryuki/Ryuga (Dragon) - Chinese Horoscope Scissor (Crab/Cancer) - Greco/Roman Horoscope Ouja (Snake) - Chinese Horoscope Tiger (Tiger) - Chinese Horoscope Zolda (Bull/Taurus) - Greco/Roman Horoscope Imperer (Sagittarius, according to you?) - Greco/Roman Constellations Femme - Sygnis the Swan Verde - Chameleo the Chameleon The ones I can't place are Raia, Gai, and Odin. What was Odin's animal? Phoenix? |

And yeah, Odin used a Phoenix. |

The swan's name is Cygnus, just a letter off.

Thanks. And the Phoenix constellation is.... Phoenix. Depending on the culture you go to, the spelling changes.
@Gosei - I generally associate Ox with Chinese instead of bull. |
The Greek alphabet in Faiz felt incomplete to me.
As for Ryuki, Blade & Decade, if they did a card theme again. Perhaps a new rider series from something in the lines of Yu-Gi-Oh! & Cardfight! Vanguard! Goseiger's Gosei Knight: Watashi no Turn! |
And what of Raia and Gai?

And please god no...And would Decade qualify for that, anyway? |

Does Ryuki feel like a trading card game? Blade felt like a poker game. |
If you REALLY want to stretch it, Gai could be this constellation:

I don't think a trading card style game would work for a rider.
Would be too chaotic, and we already have Yu-Gi-Oh airing. Do we really need a live action version? |

But if I had to assign a motif to the series, I think it'd just be animals and not much else. I'm not really sure Kamen Rider should be retreading old ground just yet. If they can make fruits work as a serious concept, I think they can do anything. |
@Matrixbeast - As for Raia and Gai....I have no clue. If I want to stretch out the references, or possible references, Raia could be either Scorpio or Pisces. And I mean stretch it out, Scorpio in the sense of the Devil Ray having a stinger and being an aquatic being. Scorpio is a water sign because ancient scorpions were water faring creatures. And by Pisces I mean that the Devil Ray is technically a water creature that people always call a fish, but if I'm not mistaken its on the shark family? Can't remember where I heard that.
Gai, I have absolutely no clue. I've made all the connections I can. Or as Gosei pointed out, Gai could a reference to Monoceros, the Unicorn.... |
Sharks are fish.
And Gai can be Monoceros. |
Yeah, I just can't see Ryuki and a connection to a zodiac. Just too far fetched.
