Power Rangers Movie 2017 - Should it be a Reboot or In Continuity?
So one of the many rumors that circled around a couple of weeks ago was reports of a script read that put the Power Rangers Movie in to the current continuity. The Morphin Grid was the focus point of the story and featured the Power Rangers Dino Charge losing to a returning villain - Scorpina and her new army - causing a new team of heroes to rise - the Movie 2017 Power Rangers.
Originally leaked was a script that seemed to reboot the original idea of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - with Zordon and Alpha 5 assisting five new teenagers with attitude in becoming Power Rangers to battle the evil Rita Repulsa as she attempted to use a gold mine to bring life to the villainous Goldar. With the cast reveals, we're not getting character names. So who knows which side (or either) is correct. So our question is - do you think the Power Rangers 2017 Movie should be set in the current continuity, or would you rather see it as a reboot? Vote and discuss why! |
Reboot. I think the movie will be a very lose adaption/retelling of MMPR similar how the first Transformers movie was to G1.
|
I dont care either way, but I would rather see a reboot instead of trying to shove more into what little continuity we already have.
|
I'd prefer a reboot. Provides a cool opportunity to explore the origin of the Power Rangers in a new way.
|
I voted "Don't care either way" but really what I feel is that I'll like it anyway.
But between Lacre and Ludi's casting (Naomi's too to a lesser extent), and us not getting character names, it feels less and less like we're aimed at a straight traditional reboot. Another interesting theory I've started hearing (no site to peg this to, just on Facebook and stuff) is they might be doing a reboot but giving us Rocky Adam and Aisha instead of Jason Zach and Trini. |
I'm okay with either, but the in continuity intrigues me. The Dino Charge rangers being the protectors of the morphing grid is cool and we get to see what the morphing grid looks like. A returning villian coming back and avenging Rita and Lord Zedd by destroying beating the current rangers is a original idea. I'm also more of a fan of the Power Rangers beings adults like the current ones than being teenagers since it feels more realistic.

I wouldn't say reboot, as my experience with DC have left me to feel that it always supplants the old version.
Let's just say it's separate, not tied to the existing timeline but not replacing it either. |
No matter what a company says when they say "It's not a reboot, it's just a re-telling" it always means "Please don't be mad at us old fans, but we have no intentions of every revisiting the 'original' story ever again."
Tell me one time they "retold" something that didn't eventually turn in to a reboot. Transformers? Reboot. GI Joe? Reboot. (except the IDW comic that's probably nearing cancellation) Ninja Turtles? Reboot. Batman Begins? Reboot. The only instance I can think of in recent memory that was a reboot but still kept the original in place was Star Trek, which actually brought original continuity Spock to the new retelling version. |

Though if this does happen, gives me an excuse to watch Time Force on the big screen eventually. |
I wouldn't mind it being something like Star Trek that's both in continuity and a reboot.
|
I'd prefer reboot. I don't like things haphazardly shoved into continuity.
|
I voted "Don't care either way". The reason? I just want a movie with a decent story, likable characters that an audience can relate to, and just enough dry humor to enhance the characters.
Oh. And a bitchin soundtrack. |
I remember hearing that the movie was aiming at a larger, more mature audience and if it is in continuity, I feel the movie will be held back in a sense. I am not advocating for a darker, grittier PR, but if this is in continuity, it makes me think that it will be on par with what we get in the show with a much bigger budget and better directing. Why have a movie in continuity, but isolate some of the audience (if it is too mature, parents might keep their kids away from it)
|
I think the movie will be darker and more serious, but still market to kids. That's how Kamen Rider: The First and the Transformers movies where like.
|
I don't care either way. I think it'd be cool if they found some cool way to fit it into continuity that would make sense, but I doubt it, and it's not necessary. Besides, if they really want to do a cinematic universe with this just like everyone and their mom wants to, then it'll have to be a reboot and not be held back by already established lore.
Although I am interested in the fact that so far, the reboot doesn't look to be using Zack (as in, a black character). So I'm wondering if we will have rocky, Aisha, Adam, or just one or two replacing members of the original group for ease of plot sake later on when they make sequels, so they don't have to go through a whole arc of swapping out characters like the show did. |
A reboot. I'd rather both it and the show to have the freedom to do its own thing.

- Story is a touchy subject as most modern action movies are extremely lackluster in terms of plot. It usually involves some MacGuffin that is the object of everyone's interests and holds the fate of the universe in balance (until the sequel replaces it with something else). Characters are largely one-dimensional with slightly humorous but ultimately forgettable one-liners with a little emotion and thrown into impossibly over-hyped situations which would kill most humans 99.9% of the time. - If the whole "Let's have Rita steal gold to revive/recreate Goldar" plot survives, this thing is dead in the water and Saban won't even be able to break even with the accompanying toyline. - If it brings back Scorpina and even gives a PLAUSIBLE explanation as to how she survived all these years and where she has been, then the connection to old school Mighty Morphin' remains even if there is no remake-version of "Jason, Kimberly, Rita, Goldar, and Zordon". - If it does fit with Dino Charge, it should maybe have a cameo or two and hint at the show, but not dwell upon it. Something like that 1998 The X-Files movie did. - Even if it does go its own way, it can still crossover with the show, because...you know...P.R. Universe...which is about the same as Transformers or D.C. Comics...Multiverse. I'm voting that it should stay within the show's mindset and keep most of the adult elements "obvious, but tolerable", but if does do its own thing, so be it. If it stays within, It doesn't need to go insane for the sake of "Going Insane". It should literally show on-screen that some real thought went into every element at every turn. It should take the time to feed into people's likely condemnation of "Any Power Rangers movie is gonna suck!" and then turn that on its head; surprise fans and critics. I want a film that feels like an adventure, an exciting surprise where even parents who are only at this thing for the sake of their children are enthralled. Years ago, during the American theatrical release of that Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, I became aware of one man who complained that the whole thing was just one long battle. It should have action, but mostly fantasy action that is integral to a plot that actually makes since. I want the one who goes to review this thing to step into that room feeling like this is punishment and walk out feeling amused and thoroughly shocked that a kids movie could actually be that good: "On a scale of one-to-ten, I'd give that kitschy little kids movie a solid seven or eight!" P.S.: The soundtrack should have a reputable composer with a some talent. It should even have themes unique to the movie. In the original, Alpha got a song during the credits. The songs should try not to stress any particular era. There should be recognizable elements to people of the '90s and kids of today. Even older songs that have become so ubiquitous that most anyone of any generation can half-way recognize them. Remember how a Van Halen song worked into the original? Repeat that! |
I like the thought of there being a show universe and a movie universe. That was how I saw the original movie. It may've starred the cast from the show, but it was still it's own universe. It's own story. And then you have the second movie, Power Rangers: A Turbo Money Grab, that was basically the season premiere and is something to be used as an example to future generations of what not to do. So I have no problem with the movie being it's own universe, having it's own history and story. It's own characters and design. And I hope never shall the two meet.
The television universe stays the television universe and the movie universe stays the movie universe. (I do hope though the Movie Megazord will be Zord Builder, but I think that's a given) |

Eh, I don't care either way. it's not as if Power Rangers was ever that big on continuity anyway, and I rather they do something new than just give us MMPR again, but as long as it's cool, I don't care that much.
|
I don't think the movie needs to be a reboot. I think it needs to tie in to the power rangers universe. This movie can happen in the time line of Just adter Super Dino Charge & Just befor what ever new season comes after that.

I voted for "I do not care either way" because I think both concepts could work.
Perhaps having the film be a modern take on Mighty Morphin' would be the better option because then it could introduce the original costumes, weaponry and mecha to a new generation while at the same time be its own thing. I think that could also be achieved if the film is in continuity with the T.V. series. |
Reboot. Trying to make it to be this coexisting thing with Dino Charge feels unnecessary.
Let it be its own world. |
It would make no sense at all if this was trying to be in continuity.
|
I rather have it be set it in it's own universe then be link to the shows. The live action Transformers movies do fine without being link to G1 or any of the recent shows at the time.

It would allow for cameos of past Power Rangers though any aside from the current Dino Charge or the original/S2 Mighty Morphin would make no sense to nostalgia audiences that haven't watched since 1995. It would also free the writers up a bit to use previous story elements that may be familiar to audiences or require little explanation to use (ie: Morphin Grid). If the movie is decided to work as a reboot to the franchise, or basically be set in its own universe... It dances a dangerous line with the story. If it seriously comes down to "Rita needs to steal gold to bring Goldar to life" then, as you've stated, the movie ends up a colossal flop and Lionsgate doesn't touch Power Rangers again for another decade as Saban Brands and Bandai America struggle to rebuild trust with retail stores who bought big on the movie only to watch it suffer and shelfwarm. NOTHING about the leaked character sides sounds even the least bit promising. In that one it's the character backstories that they use to try and create characterization - Jason the big athlete who blew out his knee and now has all this pent up aggression and doesn't know what to do with it, Zack the stereotypical cool guy who ends up living incredibly poor, Kim who is fighting her own private battle with cancer, Billy who lost his mother and is coping with that along with some form of autism, and Trini who is the stereotypical loner girl who has no friends. I hate that type of storytelling because it's lazy - it's using our own preconceived notions of how people like that live to explain why they act the way they do. It's about "telling" instead of "showing", and that's what GOOD movies do is "show". "Why is Kim being all quiet and acting like a bitch? Oh, because she's dying from cancer." versus "Why is Kim being all quiet and acting like a bitch? Wait, we're following her home ... but she's not going home. She's going to the doctor? WTF? Radiology? OH SHIT DOES SHE HAVE...?!" But you can't do that for FIVE main characters, as well as tell a gratifying story that gets you interested in the villains or the heroes sidekicks like Zordon and Alpha 5. I will be honest, I don't have a lot of optimism for this movie after reading the character sides. I truly hope that the script is NOT what we read about Goldar and gold. I'd rather it be Scorpina than Goldar. I hope there's some surprises left for us other than who the Yellow Ranger is. |
i like see reboot mmpr s2 - 6 power rangers be grandkids of 6 oringial power rangers like in dairanger fianl

That doesn't sound bad. If they worked the continuity aspect that way maybe it can work. And heck maybe they don't have to all be grandkids of the original six from MMPR but from other seasons as well, only that this team gets the rejuvenated MMPR powers. |
A reboot in continuity , so that JDF as Tommy can appear on the last scene waking up in a cold sweat and say "what a nightmare !" and then Kimberly can tell him to go back to sleep. ;)
|
We got all 5 actors who will play the power rangers!
Wonder if the original actors will help the new ones? Like the actors will be trained, the originals will give them advice in keeping the original legacy alive through the new one. And... if it goes well, and if a sequel will be made... who will play the green ranger and white ranger? Like.... I can picture Leo Howard playing green. |
Reboot. I want to a more realistic spin on the concept, and it'd be hard to do that if they made it fit in the same universe. Give us Pacific Rim meets Avengers
