Best toku outside of Rider, Sentai, Ultra, Metal Heroes?
Aside from Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, Garo, and Metal Heroes, what are the best toku series? They can be from the same companies as those four, just not from those five series (because I'm looking for stuff I don't already know about) For example, Android Kikaider, Chouseishin Gransazer, or Denkou Choujin Gridman?
(edit: added Garo to the list. I'm basically trying to weed out the obvious choices and go for stuff that's not usually talked about) |
Garo.

Well GARO, if you don't count that. I don't know much other wise.
|
|
GARO is my fave toku after Kamen Rider,
so I'll go with that. ^^,,, |
Garo
|
garo, and perhaps bima satria garuda?
|
As a franchise, Kikaider.
As an individual series, the first Garo season. |
I'd probably say Zubat, Garo (yeah, the first season) and Gridman.
|
Garo. Its my favorite toku series of 2015.
|
I forgot about Garo lol. I'm gonna go ahead and add that to the list as well, since it seems to be everybody's answer and I already knew about it.
|
Well, with Garo and Garo-related byproducts out of the way, I have to give my vote to Daimajin Kanon. It seems to have largely slipped under most people's radar, but I love the show to bits. It's basically the spiritual successor to Kamen Rider Hibiki and tells a really moving and engaging story.

Especially that scene in the opening clip where it transitions from R1 to Fire 1, still looks cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hG5mNHFIDY |
If you want to be super retro then there is Gekko Kamen (Moonlight Mask). Japan's first TV Toku hero.

http://blogs.c.yimg.jp/res/blog-b6-7...11287243/img_0 Speaking of which, anyone know if this character was the inspiration for Marvel's Moon Knight? |
Moon Knight was created in '75, making it really unlikely in an era where media from one country was a lot more difficult to even make it to another without a full publishing.
There was a Moonlight Mask anime in '72, but I still hold my doubts simply because: Who at Marvel would have access to it? (Marvel's deal with Toei started in '78, so I doubt Toei would be throwing them untranslated VHS's of random anime and Toku during '75 to influence Moon Knight). |
Chouseishin series definitely. I've enough parts from all three to say that they are all awesome, and have awesome stunts and choreography, with a mech dynamic that isn't much repetitive like Sentai. And all have their fair share of drama and comedy, making a blend. I wish it got more recognition, because I adore the heck out of this series, and sometimes it's on par with Sentai in my opinion.
Tomica Hero also is really good, I love Rescue Force but haven't seen Rescue Fire, but that's an awesome one too. |
For other giant superheros there is Ambassador Magma (Based on a manga from Osamu Tezuka) and Specter Man. Ambassador Magma air almost a week before Ultraman did.

Specter Man looks like a cross between Ultraman and Planet of The Apes.
|
Specter Man is cheesy and dated, but it's still enjoyable if you are into Ultraman.
|
Definitely DaiMajin Kanon. Full of heart.
If you wanna get a little Shōwa, Kaiketsu Zubat and Iron King. I haven't finished either, though I'm close to finishing the latter. Both are great fun. |
There's Golden Bat. Japan's first superhero and had two movies. One in 1950 and one in 1966.
