Super Sentai Going International
 

Even though Super Sentai is a Japanese superhero programme but do you think that Super Sentai has the opportunity to educate International viewers and not just the Japanese viewers?

We've gotten official DVD releases of Zyuranger and Dairanger, so I think it's a moderate likelihood.
I doubt we'll get a concurrent release of a Sentai and a PR, since they'd basically be competing with themselves, though.

I think Sentai shows on Chruchyroll would be awesome if Saban and Toei are cool with it.

I'm fairly certain we'll at least get Kakuranger as well on DVD. Shout! Factory said that they're interested in doing the pre-Zyu series as well, so maybe Zyuranger sold SO well that they're confident in doing this for a while?

How funny would it be if a new Sentai, say Ninninger, was released on DVD before it turned into Power Rangers?

PR would probably lose a bit of it's money and audience.

I'd be down for Kakuranger. I think it's reasonable to assume they'd at least release that (Seeing as how it's one of the 3 series that comprises MMPR). I'm curious if they'd be willing to do other such series, though.

However, they say they're interested in releasing pre-Zyu series? I wonder if we'll get the in suit teams on the covers if they so choose to do so. After all, since they wouldn't be suits a child would recognize and accidentally mistake for their favorite PR, there wouldn't be any fears. Or would it still feature the out of suit actors just to maintain consistency?

Also, it'd be trippy to get Ninninger released on DVD in the states before it's PR adaptation was made.

If they do Goranger on DVD in the US, I would imagine it would be a pretty pricey set. It's 84 episodes long and would have a bigger box set then Zyuranger or Dairanger had.

I doubt that's true, given that it's audience is more "watch it as it airs" type and less "seek out and buy subbed DVDs" type.

Define educate?

Personally, I think it is entirely possible to get international viewers into Super Sentai as France had some seasons of 80s Sentai back in the day (Bioman and some of the following, if I remember correctly). Actually, I always wondered why we got Power Rangers in Europe in the first place, as they did translate and show original Japanese toku before (in Germany, we had the original Godzilla movies and Tokkei Winspector).

These days however, we surely have the problem of the stigma around Power Rangers. Here in Germany, Power Rangers is a show that most people rather frown upon because it has an image of low-budget productions and bad acting. Of course people also consider it overly cheesy.
Also, as we didn't get our own official DVD releases of Super Sentai along with the US, I think it might be harder for people to get into Super Sentai as some shows are not even available online anymore. I wish I could somehow change that, but that also depends on how well-received Ultraman X is on Crunchyroll with the European audience. It is surprisingly popular on the German Crunchyroll, but in relation to how few people watch live action drama in general, it's pretty uninteresiting for the majority. Toku will always have a hard time in Europe because of that negative stigma, I guess :/

Do you all think that it is also creative that characters for Sentai Rangers are Non-Japanese?

We're actually discussing international release of the series beyond the Shout! DVDs.

I'd rather they didn't.

1. I can't own streaming, but I can kind of own a fansub.
2. I'd rather buy them on DVD.

Now if they wanted to stream them with the guarantee they would come out on DVD/BD in the US a month or so later, fine, but if the choice came down to streaming or fansubs, I go with fansubs.

Well, watching Ninninger actually makes me want to watch the PR adaptation when it comes out. I'm curious to see what they do with it. Perhaps they could do it in a way that would build hype for the new series? I also feel like, even though Sentai is a kid's show in Japan, these subbed sets are aimed at an older audience, and the newer series would be the same. So the subbed (we'll keep going with Ninninger) Ninninger set would be targeted towards older crowds, while the PR adaptation would be towards kids.

No idea if it would work out that way, but it's a thought.

This is very true. The Sentai boxed sets require kids to read subtitles very quickly. That automatically makes the audience for the DVD sets at least a few years older than Power Rangers' target demographic.

Super Sentai is very niche. I will be surprise if Shout goes before Zyuranger or after Kakuranger. Zyuranger is the first R1 Sentai show on DVD and was used for MMPR. So a lot of fans bought it. Not trying to be negative, but I would not be let down if we don't get many Sentai shows on DVD.
