For those who watched Jetman...
Does the ending feels bad and rushed? Or it's just me?
I loved the entire series except for a few things that I think were badly done (Raita development and some parts of the love triangle) Villians were great, Gai changing with the episodes was a part I really enjoyed, and the way every main villain history ends is great. But the ending just got me mad. I guess it shows how much Gai changed that he was injured and still went to the wedding(I think it shows he started to care more about the others rather than himself). But still I can't understand why it was done this way. I think this series is one of the best sentai but the ending just feels like crap. What do you guys think about this and about the series overall? |
What was wrong with it, though? Specifically? Gai's attending the wedding while injured? What was wrong with that scene? Gai is an idiot.
|
Well I don't think he should have died that way. I mean he beats grey in the duel they defeat radiguet and then he dies this way because he didn't want the others to worry about him.
I think the other would feel a lot worse if they find him dead. I can say the wedding was unexpected but they kinda hint that could happen so I'm not mad at that.(even it it was kinda out of nowhere) But Gai dying that way was not good for me (even if that shows how much he changed) I feel that if they wanted him dead they could have killed in a more heroic way than this. The series is one of the best in my opinion and Gai is probably my fav character anyways, but this really felt bad for me. At least he comes back in that epic gokaiger episode. |
Gai's death is amazing to me exactly because he didn't die in some big overblown way. The fact that he helped save the planet then was killed in some random mugging just makes the whole thing more poignant.
|
Gai's death was rather well done. He didn't die in a rain of fireworks and explosions, but as a normal man, which is what, ultimately the Jetmen wanted to be. While they all embraced it, only Ryuu wanted to be a Jetman, the others wanted to live normal lives.
I think Gai's death was handled well. It was done to protect someone else, he still prioritized his friends' feelings and did his best to meet them for a special event, but he didn't betray who he was and kept it to himself, keeping in tune with his loner tendencies. It sucked that he didn't go out in flames, but he still did die a hero. |

it is nice that his death is different from other characters but maybe he shouldn't die at all. Quote:
The way you say it really makes me feel better about his death. (Even tought I wanted him to stay alive) It was the right way to die for Gai. Thanks for that post it cleared my mind . |
Gai is a selfish asshole. He didn't go to their wedding to show how he changed, he went to their wedding so he can die there, ruining the entire memory of what is supposed to be a happy moment. Every year when their anniversary comes up, they're going to think of the death of their comrade more than their wedding, and that is exactly what he wanted, to be the center of attention.
|
Wow, way to completely misread both the character's growth and that ending.

If he was selfish, I'm sure that he would've gone to the hospital instead. I mean, he got stabbed in the first place while getting the lady's purse back... He certainly didn't have to do that. |

The entire fucking point of Gai's character is that he begins as a dick but grows to become a decent person. Evolving from asshole to team player to nice guy. However, change is subtle. He kept his "Cool guy" exterior and loner tendencies because good character growth isn't about making a character take a complete 180 in personality. He went to their wedding because he valued the team and didn't want to seem flippant by ditching it for the hospital (Stupid choice, but it was a kind gesture). There have been moments in Sentai where things are left up to viewer interpretation, but Jetman's ending was so clear as day that in order to get your point of view, you basically had to ignore all the signs intentionally. |
Gai's death is amazing, and one of the best moments in sentai history. It's senseless and random and brutal and sad... just like death in real life. You're supposed to feel mad, MadRyu, because death is infuriating.
Gai is the most human of all the sentai heroes, so it's thematically fitting (and downright poetic) that he'd would go out in such a mundane way. |
Um guys...
I was being sarcastic. I still do think it was messed up that he would go to a wedding and ruin their moment by dying, but I know why he did it. |

Besides, Gai has superpowers...you'd think with proper medical treatment he could survive a stab wound. Unless of course it got him in a vital place and he knew he wouldn't last, but I don't see Gai as being the type of person to really tell if a stab wound will be fatal or not. |
It doesn't really matter since Gai never would've gone to the hospital. He had a very important place to be so he'd go regardless.

Naturally, Gai probably would've survived if he went to the hospital. Stab wounds are dangerous, but it takes a lot of stabs to kill someone with no chance of survival, unless you pierce something super vital on the first shot. But his own personality kept him because he had a wedding to attend, that being of his best friend and the love of his life, so while everyone would've been fine with him missing it, he wouldn't have been.

I also feel the Jetman episode of Gokaiger gives an even greater perspective towards Gai's character. Like, just watch that episode after the Jetman finale and Gai becomes even greater. |
I knew that it happened before I even started the series, so I was expecting it to happen before the end. Then I find out it's in this little clip that was tacked on to the ending after a very unclimactic battle against Radiguet? He was killed by a purse snatcher's tiny knife? He didn't even bother trying to go to the hospital? Having him die putting his friends before himself was a great idea, showing development from the loner that he was at first, but it was poorly executed.
|
If you think its poorly executed then I recommend the Jetman themed episode of Gokaiger. Its a nice footnote to Gai.
|
I thought Jetman was a master piece I can't believe I never heard of it before this year. Simply amazing I mean the bad guy smokes black n milds lmao!
Only negative to me was no 6th Ranger but The Black Ranger played Roulette for an entire episode coolest thing ever |
Sadly, Gai had to die since he is basically Condor no Joe from Gatchaman.
|
I didn't like that Gai was going after the Pink Ranger her and Red were lames they deserved each other. Black was too cool for that nonsense.
Black vs Grey was the best thing ever. Couldn't find Gatchaman but I downloaded Battle of the Planets look forward to watching it one day |
Well, in terms of the story, it was kind of necessary.
Gai didn't want to be a Jetman, and unlike Raita, Ako, and Kaori (Who also didn't want to be Jetmen), he didn't really care enough about others to do so out of the goodness in his heart. For the first arc in Jetman, it was basically his desire to win Kaori (As well as his drive to beat Ryu) that kept him on the team. Besides, love makes everyone do things they never thought they would. |
Sometimes I wonder what if they pulled a Bioman and killed him off mid-show and had Wakamatsu be a whole new different character aka Green Eagle.
Not neccessarily follow that epilogue spinoff manga panel-by-panel but say he is the more by-the-book twin brother of Gai etc. I still love how they finished the show but thoughts anyone? |
I don't think that would work. Gai's death caps not only caps off his story arc, but the character is integral in Ryu's development as well.
To have it happen in the middle of the series would just feel sloppy. |
No objection there.
But suppose they wrote it so that Gai became this brother from another mother or Date-san figure to Ryu early on and killed him off say around 15ish maybe? Again I have nothing against the story but if they went another route I would not mind that. |
The show was written to be in a soap opera style. The ending was suppose to be bitter sweet to remind you that this is still a drama not just a superhero show.
|
I understand what you're getting at, but "Soap opera" isn't really the right way to describe it, since those are basically designed from the get go to just...Never end :lol
