To those that own the Dairanger and Zyuranger Boxed Sets
 

I was curious at how accurate the subs were for the official releases? I know they'll be accurate from an official release point of view, but I was hoping to get someone's judgement for someone like myself who's only been exposed to fan subs. I was curious 'cause I was planning on getting both sets this year.

They're pretty much dead on.

Sweet. I was curious, 'cause I didn't know how everything would work given they're an official release. I now have something to look forward to.

Not really sure how anyone can properly comment on accuracy without being fluent in Japanese, but they seem cohesive enough if that's what you mean.

I vaguely remember a few people pointing out errors and stuff (not translation wise per se), y'know things like the subtitle saying "Bandora!" when the speaker was actually saying "Minna!" (or something like that) or how the spelling of Mei's tribe name was inconsistent. As far as I can understand from what some of my translator pals have commented, the translations seem mediocre at best but people are encouraged to buy them to show their support nonetheless.

At least for Zyu, anyway. Things 'might' be a bit better with Dai (because both fansub versions had their fair share of issues) but I haven't heard anybody comment on that one (good or bad) even though it's been out for awhile now.

On top of it all, the packaging is outright atrocious

The seem very accurate and thorough. With less untranslated Japanese than the TV-Nihon Dairanger subs. A few terms like honorifics are ignored or replaced (when a kid calls one of the male Dairangers "nii-san" it's either translated as "mister" or the character's name), but that's probably a good decision as well.

Each episode is also organized into sensible chapters, which were preserved after I ripped my DVDs. Made it nice and easy to skip OPs, EDs, and previews. Good set. I only own Dairanger, but I'm strongly considering picking up Zyuranger. Very interested to see if they continue releasing these.

There are some grammatical and spelling errors, but there is nothing wrong with the translations. Just because your translator friend does not like the wording used does not make it an incorrect translation as everyone is going to translate something differently.

They are accurate, which is all that matters.

I wouldn't want grammatical nor spelling errors (at least not frequent enough to the point of bringing up) in something that I paid for, though...

I felt like their Dairanger was definitely a "smoother" translation that the fansub I watched.

How are they mediocre though? They are accurate, which is the only thing that matters.

And every company has spelling and grammatical errors in their subtitles. Hell, Bandai changed the spelling to Zechs' last name three times in their Gundam Wing subtitles. There have been plenty of mistakes in the subtitles to Dragon Ball Z from Funimation. It happens. It's not like it is every line of every episode.

They're accurate enough. Certain wording choices I think are odd, but not much can be done with the DVD format. Definitely get them.

From what I've seen it's pretty spot on. Some of the wording is different if you've seen the fan subs but it gets the point across. I usually point to an example from the Tsubasa OVA Tokyo Revelation that you can word the same phrase several different ways. The example being one sub group will phrase a line "Without fail" while another will say "no matter the price" meanwhile the official dub will have it as "at any cost."

Same line different version but both are still accurate and the Zyu and Dai dvds are much the same. Most you'll find is the occasional slip up here and there, but that's to be expected with foreign films in a different language. You wanna see some really bad translations, read the Duwang version of Part Four of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure and have yourself a good laugh at "I AM THE FUCKING STRONG!!"

From what I've read, the only real inconsistent spot was Byakko Shinken's name in the Dairanger subs.
