DX ZyuOhKing video review (Japanese)
|
Wow, not only is it disappointing, it's also the runt of the litter!
This line better get good fast. |
I always look for "possible hidden features" for future expansion on the mech.
There doesn't appear to be any at all on this thing. This screams "cost cutting" in the worst possible way. I mean, toys from 20 years have more play pattern and capabilities than this does ... it is literally three blocks on top of each other with articulation that make G1 Transformers look Godly in comparison (and those are 30 years old). Let's at least hope the show is amazing. But I'm not sold on the merchandise at all. Maybe in the clearance bin later. |
Looks awful. Not even speaking from an aesthetic standpoint - it's a horrible toy. The individual animal modes suck big time, and you can only stack those cubes in one order and then hurray, arms!
I can’t really compare this to much since Sentai isn’t my cup of tea to begin with, but I did watch a video review of Shurikenjin when he came out and that one looked like a fun toy at least. This looks like trash. |
To be clear, I'm glad TokuNation posted this review.
With that said: WOW, I'm grateful that I didn't pre-order this. From the side and back, it just looks awful. By itself, it's a pony with a single not-great trick. I don't mind the relatively small size (not everyone has enough space for Bragigas or Ha-Oh Shurikenjin), and I can imagine some potential there for future combinations, given the visible, unused tabs and clips. Whether I'll enjoy those combinations probably hinges on whether they abandon the uni-leg. I'm curious to see what, if anything, Super Sentai Artisan does with Zyuohger. (I don't have a clear idea about how Shinobimaru and Rodeomaru sold.) My suspicion is that Zyuoh King just can't be salvaged for the adult collector market. |
I like how the top of his Sword is the head. I like the zords 90%.
|
Well I'm sold.
Some may not be sold (if you liked ToQOh then you have no grounds to bash this as ToQOh was simpler despite being five trains) but I like this. Mainly due to Minecraft influences. I'll need to figure out how to skin this in Minecraft now! |
You know, if the lion's knee guards flipped up, or the shark...Did anything when the skewer is inserted, I could at least understand the gimmick.
But it's literally just the eagle that does anything (Granted, I've known this when the toy was demoed at some kind of event). It doesn't feel like the gimmick is necessary to inhibit all 3/5 toys when only one actually, truly interacts with it. The video also tried to do something I probably could've enjoyed. If the cubes could transform in different stacking orders, then maybe I could feel some justification with it's gimmick. But as it stands here, I just can't look at it without feeling a large amount of disappointment. Inhibit 2/3rd's of the mecha just to have flip out arms? Nah. |
So happy ZyuohKing is back in that scale. I hated how tall the mecha were getting especially after adding multiple other parts to it. My favorite gattai to this point is Ultimate Daibouken because of that very issue. I'm hoping this Zyuoh Cube system is just as cool.
Im still leaning toward the minipla strictly for articulation, but there is something really charming about the DX version as well. |

That being said, this thing is just missing Zord Builder ports to be a Power Rangers toy. I don't mean that as an insult - but it has the same simplicity and lack of "transforming pieces" that Power Rangers tends to cheapen out from the Sentai versions. I'll be curious to see how the new zords are worked in to this other than just new cube combinations. |
The problem is just that there isn't anything to it.
You have animal and cube mode...Literally. Inserting the skewer only changes Eagle from cube mode...Back into Eagle mode! There's no hidden depths to the other cubes, no electronics as an out for it's simplicity. It just feels underwhelmingly basic. |

Other people disliking it shouldn't diminish your enjoyment. People here should feel free to praise or criticize stuff without being told how tired someone is of that kind of commentary. I don't recall reading any over-the-top criticism of this toy. |
There is NOTHING about this I like.

What gets me is how the suit designs are quite good and unique, but this mecha design is soooo lazy

The toy, on the other hand... I don't know that I'd apply "lazy," yet. There might be some cool combinations heading our way. I just don't like the look of the toy in its combined mode. The lack of legs, the lack of articulation, the imbalanced profile, the 2 and 3 blocks just sitting there doing nothing... These bother me. What I like are aesthetics of the cube animals. Cube Eagle seems weakest to me, but that's the cube that does the most, so I'm inclined to give it a pass. Lion, Shark, and Elephant appeal to me as nifty Minecraft critters. (I'm not yet sure how I feel about Cube Tiger's animal mode.) I'll also give it this: Zyuoh King, in my opinion, improves a little on the transformation. The feature I liked best on ToQ-Oh was how the opening train doors revealed the face. It looked good on-screen and translated perfectly to the toy. Shurikenjin's face-reveal felt a little weak to me by comparison (although I thought the overall design was strong.) The twisting face reveal of Zyuoh King is kinda cool, and I expect it'll look great on the show. Gekiatsu Dai-Oh is an interesting comparison. That mecha was almost wholly designed around its combined mode and chest gimmick. I hated the design in part because there was close to no transformation for the limbs. However, it had moving legs and knees. In Zyuoh King, we've got interesting animal modes, a couple of which involve a significant amount of transformation, in addition to the cube mode, but we got these at the cost of the middle and lower cubes doing anything in combined mode. Hm. I really want to see the first major cube transformation (the one we've only seen in shadow) before I fully pass judgment on this mecha. On its own, I'm not fond of it, but I'm hoping they did something clever (and relatively rare) in planning something pretty cool for later combinations. |
I'm most curious for Zyuoh The World's mecha. We know that it'll feature one cube forming the legs and arms, with another cube solely forming an arm. So if that one features a similar auto transform gimmick, it'll probably be a lot more impressive than ZyuOh King's lackluster transformation.

^^This I could not have said it better myself. |
I can't say I'm a fan of the way they just stack in cube form to become Zyuohking. I was hoping they'd have three forms - animal, cube, and then combined. There really isn't much precedent for that kind of transformation though, so I'm not surprised.
|
Why does the stylus pen have to be so big? I mean the only reason I could see why is if they planned on making it a weapon later on for some combination because all you need to do is insert a handle into the slot where ZyuOhKing's sword would go
|
Wow this is fuckin' crap, dude. It doesn't even totally auto-transform.
|
This functions exactly as it looked like it did based on the original scans: not very much, at all.
Seriously, it is just such an incomprehensibly awful looking toy. (emphasis on toy rather than looking, though it's no looker either). |
I can only imagine that the smaller design is due to some much larger combinations coming our way.
|
That transformation was just strange.
|
This could work, if the legs actually moved. It's essentially just a tower with arms. I like the individual zords (except the eagle), but together they just don't have enough functions to sell me on it.
