Will 2017 be too much for Bandai America?
Next year is probably going to be hell for Bandai America. They will be releasing and promoting Power Rangers Ninja Steel toys, they have the Legacy line which by that time we'll see (possible) Alien Rangers and (confirmed) Ninja Storm figures, a Legacy Ninja Megazord, a (possible) Legacy Ninja Storm Megazord, and a toy line to promote the Power Rangers film. Is Bandai putting too many of their eggs in one basket?

No, just look at how many lines Lego and Hasbro have going on. Bandai would not be having multiple lines if they couldn't do it. Really if they cut a little off of Ninja Steel (number of figures, repaints, etc.) they will have plenty shelf space.
|
Now if only their distribution wasn't a fucking mess.

More like more money for them.

The movie and season's quality are irrelevant. They'll only really care if the toy sales are noticeably low. That's when things will scare them.
The movie could be at 4% ratings and the season could be at an all time low for PR, but if the toy sales stay up (And they will. PR is giant right now), then it'll be a plus in their book. Really, the biggest fears for them right now is that they may have put too much into the Legacy line, which is clearly aimed at adults with their higher prices. That might come back to bite them if the adult fans aren't too in love with the figures (Which plebians like us can't even see) and the kids aren't too into them due to being $20 a pop. Add in the inevitable Black and Gold Thunder Megazord and Tigerzord that'll be pushed out at the same time, and the Legacy line might end up sitting a little still for 2017. |
Even if the Power Rangers 2017 film gets awful review, I think it will do well at the box office and sell a good amount of toys like the 2014 TMNT film did. That awful got bad reviews from critics and fans, but still did well.

Legacy just needs to drop the Diecast and take that funding into adding articulation to the Megazord. Give the Ninja Megazord elbows, universal shoulders working knees, hips and ankle joints.
That would be worth the cost unlike gratuitous use of metal that just makes for heavy product. |
Oh man, an articulated Ninja Megazord would be beautiful~
The frog already has knees! Just enhance them some and give the wolf and ape elbows! A wrist swivel would be easy (Since the hands are just gloves you pop onto the mech). The Ninja Megazord would be such an easy place to add articulation without too many redesign worries. |

Any time a toyline gets a movie, retailers are willing to accommodate a larger retail footprint. If BoA were to offer only the current merchandising model, then they wouldn't have enough toys to fill that larger footprint.
Q4 should be fun in that you'll see Star Wars and Power Rangers dominating the holiday toy aisles. |

I think Bandai is excited for 2017. Obviously they'll have the next line of Legacy Megazords to release (Shogun, probably Tor, and tease Zeo at SDCC), they'll be in their second batch of Legacy figures (if they sell), and they'll also be pumping out movie stuff (biggest Megazord ever) along with doing some redesign of the Ninninger stuff for international release.
In theory - they stand an incredibly good chance to begin to move up the rankings against Playmates, NECA, Jakks Pacific, and Mattel in the boys toy category. |
I think what would make the Legacy line much more attractive would be 50% less diecast and 100% less zord builder...

But Zord Builder is just a port. I'll never understand that stupid argument, as to why ZB is "terrible".

Because it requires alterations to how the zords operate.
Not every megazord is a simple Go-Lion combination, so when zords like the Thunderzords or (Possibly) Astro Megazord pop up, it seems like a pointless inclusion or, possibly, hindrance due too the need of extra parts. I don't really care since the zords I'm interested in are basic in combination (Ninja Megazord, you shall be mine~), but it can be annoying depending on who it's being applied to (For example, the poorly engineered ZB ports in the Dragonzord makes the Dragonzord Battle Mode's legs splay out a lot farther than most people would like). |
Usually ZB gets put in the shoulders at least. And that flaw with the Dragonzord was less its fault and more the 2010 Megs' fault.
|
A fault caused by ZB :p
|
I'm thinking more for the Thunder Megazord and Tigerzord where you have to rip pieces off the robots to accommodate the ZB gimmick... How long before something breaks and you can't replace it?
If they are targeting the Legacy line for adults, WTF are they needlessly adding ZB ports to these robots? ZB for the MAIN line (the ones geared for kids) is fine... But not on my $200 Thunder Megazord... |
