Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger Episode 2- "Don't Underestimate This Planet!" Discussion
The Blood Game is underway. Can Yamato & the Zyumans overcome their differences to save their worlds???
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Another fine episode.
I like how this episode played out and I really like how sincere Yamato is. Also Leo, Sela and Amu exploring the human world was fun to watch. And that one moment where they address how consuming it is to maintain human faces has me hope for a fun filler ep where that feature goes haywire. Last but not least strong-scented foods being Tusk's kryptonite is something I hope they use as a running gag. |
I thought it was kinda ****ed-up when Yamato put leashes on Sera, Leo, and Amu. Am I weird for thinking that? I haven't seen the subs yet and I don't speak Japanese, so I hope it's justified a little better with context.

Fun episode, fun series! These two episodes have established more character development and world building (and team building, actually) than any series in years

This Episode got 60 excellent poll! This Junko Komura is one GENIUS Head Writer! He have prove that he can make do a great job at character development! :) EPIC WIN FOR JUNKO KOMURA! :) |

Reason I ask is some folks seem to be refferring to Komura as he rather than the expected she. |

But yes, Junko Kōmura is female. |

But once in a while Komura would be referred to as a he so I started wondering if this happened to be one of those extremely rare occasions where they use a predominantly feminine name for a man(as a comparison for example, the name Ashley). But I guess I was not wrong. I just wanted to make sure. |
this episode was illogically corny yet ok i guess.......for a noop guy who just started using his power for a 2nd time
he sure knows what to do and where to stand like a pro.....faar better then the masters guardians themselves just like Ninninger i like the world and the characters themes but if they keep pulling the rushed unbalanced mediocrity then this may turned out to be another dry slow based series. |
Watched the episode. It’s not bad, but I don’t really get a kick out of this. It’s still the same old Sentai-tropes which bug me.
The characters are fun, the setup isn’t half-bad (although terribly rushed) and the second theme of videogames is kinda nice. But then again… the role calls, the gimmick weapons, always the same "Defeat enemy once, grows larger, call the mechs, combine, win”-formula, it’s really, really boring. I don’t like this one bit. Sentai is just not for me I guess… |
I wasn't sure if I was gong to watch the second episode or not, but I ultimately decided that it wouldn't hurt anything to give the show a second chance. I thought it was reasonably enjoyable, overall.
I do like the characters, so far. I think I have at least a good basic sense of most of theme and Yamato, in particular, feels very well done. After Ninninger it's nice to have a Red whose default state isn't "screaming moron." The others are still a bit basic, but also likable. I'm a bit iffy on the animal costume humor scenes, but compared to some of the comic relief we're getting in Rider these days, they're not that obnoxious and they aren't overstaying their welcome so far. I'm finding myself intrigued by the villains. I like the idea of Earth being an arena for their destructive gladiatorial games - it's not a complex motivation, but I do like that there's an obvious goal from the outset. I'm starting to the feel the Minecraft Megazord a bit more. It's still dumb, but it's turning into more of an amusing dumb than an infuriating dumb. I think I'll stick with the show for now. I'll probably get bored and drop it like I tend to do with Super Sentai, but for now it's reasonably entertaining. |

It was alright.
I do like the cool headed Yamato, only really getting loud when the situation calls for it. I also like the Zyuman's looser personalities, willing to do silly things because they enjoy it, but they're not over the top or annoying while doing so. It makes scenes involving them goofing off not too grating (Sela swimming around in the fountain was pretty funny and cute, as well as the scene of Yamato dragging the 3 of them back with dog collars). I did enjoy that Tusk's plot wasn't immediately resolved at the start of the episode, but was a little disappointed that it was resolved halfway through. I do hope the "I'll let you borrow it" scene involving the Changer does come back down the road. My main issue was that the episode kind of went from it's own story to the generic copy paste as soon as they morphed. Fighting fighting fighting mech combination, fighting, fighting, episode over. I wouldn't be so disappointed if it didn't take up so much time. Their team finisher is...Interesting, to say the least, and ZyuOhKing with tiger and elephant is nice looking in motion (I'll probably grab that minipla, too), but ultimately, aside from the cute little scene in the cockpit, it really could've been cut out and nothing would be missed, which really sucks. Well, I'll probably keep up with it for the next couple weeks. Yamato is a really nice red, both in being a break from the hot headed reds, as well as just being a nice dude caught up in this huge situation (I enjoy him trying to be level headed, but his compatriots ensure that doesn't happen) and the Zyuman's aren't annoying (Well...Most of the time), so seeing their antics doesn't really bother me. Villains are so standard they could be replaced with stick figures and actually become more interesting, and the quirky side character is pretty meh (Lives in a log cabin, dresses as animals while making obnoxious sounds, and eats bowls of natto that huge? Par for the course at this point). Also Sela can swim in the ground. Well, that's one hell of a power. |
Oh, I am loving Zyuohger. So far, this is the best sentai since Kyoryuger if we are talking recent seasons. I love watching the five Zyuohgers interact with each other, it truly is a neat dynamic. Yamato is by far the best on the team in terms of fighting. I was kind of surprised no one was going on about him being a "Mary Sue" or something dumb like that. Although it is a little odd that he is the best fighter, it's no big deal because the fight scenes look amazing. The visuals here are some of the best I've seen in a sentai season. Ninninger had some crazy good action set pieces, but the story wasn't all that strong. But here, the story and the investment in the characters makes the visually pleasing flying sequences meaningful. The Deathgaliens don't get a lot to do, but it really doesn't bother me all that much. There have been seasons where they have done complex villains, like Gekiranger and Jetman and they have worked very well. I do hope down the line that more a personal conflict is established between the two camps.
Tusk and Yamato's dynamic has already been set up as an interesting one, and I love that once Tusk finally comes around, he is driven off by the natto at the end. My favorite up to this point has to be Leo. His look in human/zyuman form is so over the top that it becomes hilarious. His loud personality gives the team a lot of energy. I look forward to next week's episode, which looks like it will focus on Amu in some capacity. |
This series has had a really strong start 2 episodes in. I was very pessimistic about it but so far I'm glad to be proven wrong. I loved the fact that the premiere ended with a cliffhanger in to the 2nd episode, but was disappointed that it didn't continue in to a 3rd.
My biggest gripe about Super Sentai lately is that the story telling is so juvenile that it's frustrating. Ninninger gave us nothing to want to keep watching beyond the episode that was airing - I was hoping Zyuohger would continue this "ends with a to be continued" type of plot device to really get the viewer to want to tune in to see what happens. This show, as the previous shows, will be decided in the next grind (3 through 28). If it fails to do anything than give us one-shot episodes with no real over-arching plot, I'll probably quit watching. The characters leaps and bounds better than Ninninger and ToQGer and I'm already interested in seeing them fleshed out, plus we have the "bird zyuman" mystery from the premiere to look forward to a conclusion. However, again, they can't sit on that for 25 to 30 episodes without touching it and hope to keep an audience. But because the toys are absolutely lackluster this year it begs one to believe the show will be great - because that's how the law of averages work :) |
I can't believe I am saying this but.... Zyuohger got a good comedy!
The problem of last Sentai is that they try to be funny HARD enough but it's doesn't work Zyuohger doesn't have a weird old man doing a weird face... Sorry Chief Honganji from Kamen Rider Drive I love Zyumans are driving Yamato CRAZY, I hope that would be a running gag. Sorry Yamato but this is more entertaining than weird old man doing a weird face that is try to be funny When Yamato introduced 3 Zyuman to his uncle, Mario Mori who is try to be a SEAL, Leo just turned Lion in front of Mario that cause Mario fainted! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Tusk is used to be a nice kid as he was happy with other Zyumans before meeting Yamato, it assumed that his stoic behavior could result of what happens to his Elephant Father? Uncle? Tusk hating Nattō remind me of AbareYellow's hatred toward Nattō. That was a reference to Abaranger? When Tusk make his grand entrance to aid his fellow Zyuohger, His First word is "Homestly... You people are so naïve" Really Tusk? That your first word after making a grand entrance? You could says like "Yippee Ki Yay, Mr. Falcon" Come on! Tusk! Yippee Ki Yay, Mr. Falcon is more epic than the one you use! Bruce Willis will disapprove you for not saying "Yippee Ki Yay, Mr. Falcon" Yamato reveals to Tusk as well his uncle reveals to 3 Zyumans that when Yamato first meet Bird Man as a little kid, He hurt his leg after he ran away from home due of fighting with his parents. I still think Bird Man could be Yamato's REAL father because I don't buy him becoming Zyuohger because "Humans are Animals too" or he transform into Zyuoh Eagle because he is connected with Bird Man like he connect to other people Because BIRD MAN IS YAMATO'S REAL FATHER! He could have left Yamato's Mother behind when Yamato was a baby and force her to find a stepfather for Yamato |

I'm loving the fight direction in this show so far. The action in the first two episodes has really just been much more exciting than I remember Sentai having been in the last couple of years. I'm also actually getting a kick out of the character's too. Honestly, I don't think I've felt any attachment to Sentai characters since like Gokaiger. I'm not sure exactly what it is about this group, but I'm liking them a lot.
My enjoyment of this series probably has a lot to do with my initial thoughts on the promotional material. Ninniger's sub-par run along with the toyline and suits leaving me less than thrilled, I assumed this show would just be another dud, so my expectations were pretty damn low. Because of how well it's exceeded those expectations, I'm loving it more than I would if I had been excited about it from the get-go. |
I did a review of the first two episodes and plan on keeping up with this show for reviews every few weeks. Short version is I liked both episodes and the comedy in this episode was great. Worst aspects are the mecha and too much CGI in the fights.

Was a pretty fun episode. Tusk's actor feels a bit stiff, but it's not really a big issue. Pretty decent episode and the ground fight was pretty cool.
But man, the 1-5-4 formation Zyuoh King looks stupid. I will never understand why they thought having half the shark face stuck to the Eagle at all times would be an acceptable thing to do. Basically, screw you, person who designed Zyuoh King this way. (the Zyuoh Buster is also still a really dumb looking weapon). |

This was a fun episode. I think this series has potential, but the cubes definitely need getting used to.

I don't know if I'll get used to Mario. I feel that the series has tons of comedic potential with animal people living in the human world, but they still felt the need to insert a character that prances around in bad animal costumes making dumb noises just for a cheap laugh.

My issue with it was, you can see he's not quite comfortable playing the role. I kind of expect, based on Terajima's brand, that they'll eventually reveal he's hiding a more complicated past. |
Quote:
Why would Susumu Terajima playing a crazy man? maybe his character actually know the truth about Yamato but refuse to tell him a truth about him His strange behavior is part of his facade That means he is actually a serious person |
I want to believe that, but trends involving the over the top silly characters never actually evolving isn't really instilling much hope in that being the case.

I'm keeping an open mind about Mori Mario though. It would surprise me if they hired Terajima without having something interesting in mind to justify such a high profile casting. |
So, I really liked this one, the story it presented was great. I can't help but feel like the MOTW battle was kind of forced into it though.
I get the feeling that this series is going to be one to remember. |
