Tamashii Nations has a color design for the S.H MonsterArts Godzilla. Just when you think that you can not get enough Godzilla x Evagelion merchandise.

This can go away at anytime. I would have prefered the go with kiryu for something like this seeings as it has some more things in common with eva 01, but this is a definite pass.

Looks dumb, but I'm not surprised it exists nor do I doubt the fact that it'll probably sell like hot cakes. With that in mind its a pretty smart move from Bandai.

Yes, releasing a minimal effort gimmicky repaint as a tie-in is completely taking the spot of a brand new figure that would require a whole new sculpt and a ton of resources :rolleyes

This looks pretty neat actually. Aside from the nuclear bikini I like the paint and shading used, especially since I see a hint of green around the eyes and on the spines.

It also gives me some weird nostalgic vibes – seeing this I have to think of those wacky Extreme Dinosaurs variant figures with the battle paint. I never had one but I remember seeing them in stores. But since I don’t care about Evangelion or want to pay the Web-Exclusive price for it this is an easy pass. Nothing worth raging over though – repaints make money, money gets used to make more figures.

Thinking about it like the spots in this lineup are limited and that they kicked a Showa-release of the schedule just to release this is stupid.

But in the SHMA line, new figures rarely get made. And if they do, it's another Godzilla. I can't even remember what the last legitimate new monster was, Gamera? Not counting MKG as he was basically a retool of KG. So yea, Gamera. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tamashii appears to be utterly desperate to keep SHMA in the Heisei era. Hell, if they wanted to do this bad, why not go with Heisei Mecha Godzilla? He's been long out of print and the colors would have worked so much better with him. But nope, let's repaint the Heisei Godzilla...again.

If these repaints were truly going to producing new monsters, like Anguirus, King Seesar, Baragon, I wouldn't be complaining. But we aren't seeing that.

It still isn't taking up a spot though, it's a limited edition figure capitalising on a) a new Godzilla movie and b) the clearly popular Godzilla X NGE thing that's come out of this movie. It's barely contributing to the SHMA line as a whole, but I'm willing to bet it'll go down considerably better than some of the other figures in the line.

Why they chose Godzilla I don't know, perhaps because they're already doing an EVA-1 Kiryu vinyl. But to say this one-off novelty is either taking the spot of an entirely new figure or somehow ruining the sanctity of a questionably popular line is ridiculous.

You missed my point. Repaints as a whole, in the SHMA line, aren't going towards the possibility of new monsters getting made. We haven't seen that, at all. And when a new sculpt is announced, it's just another Godzilla.

Yea, this is a one off. But there have been numerous repaints within this line already. With a legitimate new monster not being released since Gamera.

I can only imagine they took Godzilla because he’s the protagonist aka the titular character of the franchise.

When they did the same thing with Transformers they repainted Optimus Prime even though there are other robots that look a lot more like the EVA thing.

Guess it’s a posterboy-only thing. And year, at least we got a Kiryu vinyl. Which looks much better than this.

Looks horrible. I totally get why they're doing it, but it's still horrible. Hopefully they make an SHMA of the new Godzilla that actually appears in the upcoming movie.

Why didn't they reveal Shin Godzilla if nothing else?

True, but for some reason Bandai don't want to do the same thing in two lines and they're doing a vinyl Kiryu in those colours.

I would've been down with this if it was a purple heisei Godzilla, or even with a green underbelly, but the little bikini bottom and the orange on the throat ruin it.

Because SHMA doesn't have enough Godzillas already? We have GMK and '54 arriving soon and then we get this mess on top of it. Having some enemy monsters for Godzilla to battle would be nice, Tamashii. And maybe ones that aren't from the Heisei era.

Why am I being quoted here?! How does the bikini paint job change the fact that it's another Godzilla? He's the titular character in his movies; complaining about too many Godzillas is like saying why are there so many Batman toys in the Batman toyline. I'd prefer to get some other monsters too, but if they're going to stick with Godzillas, they could at least make one that I would actually want to buy.

Godzilla Color Robot Damashii - Eva Unit 01 would be neat. However I don't think Tamashii Nation does Eva anymore. Revoltech has been doing Eva stuff for a long time now.

It'd be a healthier line if they released new monsters. There's something telling about the last new monster having been released at the beginning last year. If repaints were truly helping this line get new sculpts we would have seen it by now. And not just different renditions of Godzilla himself.

You say that, but I really doubt that's the case. When it started MonstersArts was pumping out a huge range of characters across multiple franchises as both mass release figures and web exclusives. It even clearly had plans to move into anime territory as well, given there have been both Macross and Evangelion MonsterArts on display at previous events.

While there's absolutely no way of gauging how successful web exclusives are, the fact that the mass release figures rarely immediately sell out on preorder and often end up discounted after release (not quite as bad as Sentai SHFs, but the point still stands) is pretty telling. And I'm talking about Japan's sales in all of this since I have no idea about Bluefin's sales, but I follow enough people on social media to know Amazon end up discounting half of them at some point too.

Bandai aren't stupid. If they're only producing Godzillas it'll be because Godzilla is the only thing that sells well. The money isn't in highly articulated expensive kaiju figures, its in vinyl toys.
