Happy 20th Anniversary Beetleborgs!
1 Attachment(s)
On September 7th, 1996, the world was introduced to the Big Bad Beetleborgs. Although it may have come off as another attempt to clone the success of Power Rangers, it still holds a place in many fans' hearts.
Here's to turning 20! Feel free to share your thoughts or memories on the show or toy line! http://www.tokunation.com/attachment...1&d=1473276008 |
Those toys were the business. Even in the wake of the Figuarts the figures still hold up EXTREMELY well.
The show...not so much. I watched it again recently and it wasn't quite as good as I remember it, but I adored it as a kid and I'll always have the memories of that. |
I don’t know if it was my first exposure to Toku since I might’ve seen Power Rangers first, but I got a figure of the Blue Beetleborg for my first day at school, and I do remember some things about the show.
Looking back at it though I don’t like it one bit, I think it’s a terrible show. Nothing about it seems appealing to me now. Except the material taken from Juukou B-Fighter. But still, happy anniversary for anyone who cares about this show. I must have had some fun with it as a kid, with the action figure at least, so that’s something it did right in my book. Quote:

I loved it as a kid but I won't watch it again because I know I'll hate it. I'm just waiting for the B-fighter shows to finally get subs

The only negatives they have is the stickers and (with hindsight) the chrome finish. |
I hate this show. Watched it whenever it came on, but it just isn't that good.
However, the designs look slick and the action is good. I just wish it didn't do that stupid haunted house thing. I had some of the toys, and they were pretty nice, I remember~ |
The toys for some of them were outstanding at the time, except White's. He had a freaking blaster molded onto his arm and it always ticked me off.
I tried watching the show again when it was added to Netflix, but I couldn't handle it like I used to. |

And you shouldn’t, because they were made for completely different purposes and goals. Which is all I'm gonna say to this specific discussion because that’s not what the topic should be about in my opinion. |
No. Nothing about this show needs to be remembered, much less celebrated. Hands down the worst of Saban's toku adaptations.

The topic was to share what you love about Beetleborgs. I love the toys. You could have easily ignored what I said but you were the one who decided to take the conversation down this route. |
I have vague memories of Beetleborgs, bur I literally only now the name and the suits, and those are from Forever Red anyway. Happy Birthday though, and it's cool to see something Saban tried to make just like PR
|
I watched a couple episodes on Netflix and it's good for laughs.

The "worst" had to be Masked Rider as no part of that (outside the initial three-parter in PR) has been re-released. I will admit like everyone else that some of it is laughable now that most of the fans have had 20 years to age and learn (and PR also tends to suffer the same fate). However, it was unique and tended to be different. Why the went the "kids-as-heroes" route, I can only speculate. It is abundantly clear that they mismanaged much of the B-Fighter footage. Take the episode of "Convention Dimension" for example, which is partially adapted from the final two episodes of B-Fighter where they teamed with Blue Swat and Janperson (gonna get a little detailed here). Blue Swat got cut, Janperson became an extra hero "Karato" and BillGoldy became "Goldex" and Queen from Blue Swat became the male-sounding "Wingar". The battle was a nonsensical blend of American and B-Fighter footage, with a blast from Blue's Beetle Battler blade delivering a final blast which used the explosions from the group attack used against Queen and BillGoldy (anyone who has seen B-Fighter knows what I am getting at). What hit me was the Shadow Borg saga, and the fact that the promos for "Forever Red" showed him being used as General Venjix (not the same as the Venjix from RPM). It was initially confusing to me and made the special honestly look...special. Personally, I believe they should do a "Beetleborgs Return" special for PR which echos why General Venjix and Co. looked like Beetleborgs and to provide resolution to what could be described as an "unfinished series". |
I loved this show as a kid. I would give just about anything to have both sets of Beetle Bonders. And to hae their gun again. I had one when I was younger, sadly I lost it when my mother and I lost our house. But I remember this show fondly.
|
I love the show too in Kindergarten. I had the toys and I remember it was Mcdonalds or Burger King that did happy meal toys for the show.

I was 25 when Beetleborgs hit, had to work, and forced my roommates to tape the first EP (VHS!). I knew it would be goofy - Power Rangers taught me not to have high expectations regarding the way the material would be "down-henshined" - but I admit that Flabber and the gang actually blew my mind. It was clear that someone on the production staff loved the old 70's "Monster Squad" / Sid & Marty Krofft shows and was going to do a pastiche of that and didn't really give a crap about the Metal Hero stuff.
Today, BBBorgs is just so, so, sooooo weird and stupid, I can't help but smile - it makes no sense and I really like that about it. Besides, from what I've seen of the original, it's not like Saban took Kamen Rider Ryuki and threw a Scooby Doo plot around it - it's pretty goofy on it's own. |
TBH I think Beetleborgs holds up better then both MMPR and Zeo which aired at around the same time.
I think some of it has to do with the better acting and that unlike Power Rangers Beetleborgs never really tried to take itself seriously. |
I don't doubt that it's better than MMPR and Zeo (As if that's hard to accomplish), but I just don't have it in me to rewatch it to find out. :lol
