PR2017 Combining Megazord Review
This is the first full look at all 5 transforming/combining Zords!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIFgRGpZoto |
The bizarre alien individual Dinozords are starting to grow on me. The Megazord itself is still a big, fat "nope," though.
|
Very cool video. I hope the other 4 ords can get here were i am soon.
|
Jesus, his bed spread is more detailed than this toy.
Not to mention they are selling them individually but couldn't even be bothered to put a button on them to shoot the missiles? Good god, Bandai didn't put any effort into this toyline, did they? Lastly, that is one majorly complicated transformation for nothing to come out of it. |
I'm ok with this. This megazord is fine. Bring on the movie, bring on the toys.
|
Fort Max has some competition...
|
This seems incredibly cheap considering how expensive it is.
|
That's a big bitch...
Not a fan. Still can't get behind the individual zords, and the megazord still looks horrid. I'm softening on the megazord, but I still just...Can't bring myself to liking it. Also, it's combination leaves a lot to be desired. The only one to not just partsform being the sabertooth tiger is really disappointing. While at least the mastodon and triceratops do have some transforming, having to remove and relocate their heads, legs, and backpacks knocks a couple points off. Isn't there going to be a normal sized combining megazord for this movie? I hope they do it a lot better. |
Eh while the individual zords are sort of growing on me, I can't really get behind the megazord design. It doesn't look that good and the fact that there isn't more of a transformation for each of the individual zords just takes some of the fun out of it. Also the fact that there isn't more paint is just, ugh. It makes the individual zords look really cheap and for their price it doesn't seem worth it to me. These zords are an easy pass for me.

I don't mind the zord designs. I just hate that 90% of it doesn't actually transform. You just pull everything off and put them back in different places.

This is as close as you can get to an objectively horrible toy. Every facet of it has quantifiable evidence of low quality. Quote:
|
Damn. And I LIKE the design. Good thing this isn't the only available thing
|
That's huge.
Just... wow that's huge. I think I'd rather get the new Voltron first |
I still hate this thing, but I could see myself getting it if it ends up all in the clearance bin for half off. It looks fun enough to build and put together if I ignore it's supposed to be a Megazord.

Also, they're putting in a lot of work for the toyline. Just because the quality isn't what we'd like doesn't mean they're not putting a lot behind it. |

That said, I am warming a little to it. I'm really can't call myself a fan, but I do want to see it executed at a smaller scale. |
I hate how it transforms and combines, but I like the design. What I DON'T like is how it looks nothing like the other figure of the supposed same megazord.

Maybe Japan will incorporate that into a future Super Sentai show if the movie bombs, especially over there. Have the villains bring a toy version of the movie Megazord to life to fight the Super Senati team Megazord, only to be quickly cut down like it was nothing. Villain quote: "I KNEW we shouldn't have relied on some overly ugly Hollywood created robot to do the job!" |
Didn't they also do that with the G-Savior in Build Fighters? :p
|
Well. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. When we saw the first pictures I thought it'd be as large as a normal BoA release, ergo it looked like it was gonna be floppy and frail. The size sells me on it more than its aesthetics.
Still don't really like it, though. It'll be an obligation buy at best. |
So size over quality huh.... cant get behind the megazord. It just looks so ugly and its basically a mess. All for $99+ .. i can understand the regular megazord line in terms of quality and design but this.. Way too expensive for what it is. Couldnt we at least have more paint apps???
|
so, I think I'd be pretty embarrassed to be the company that put a bunch of time, money, and effort into this and, this was the result. It's sad.
Just from a looks point of view, it's not terrible.. But the detailing, the super cheap construction of it, and the unimaginative "transformation" is just insane to me. This movie is an opportunity (in my opinion) to really grab the attention of kids like the original MMPR zords did to me as a kid. But I honestly don't think this would do the trick if I were a kid. |
Makes Blizzard Force Megazord toy look like an abstract masterpiece.

Toei will suffer no such shame from this.:p |

I don't care, I like the design, I think it is cool, it is alien, it looks way more badass than most other mecha in sentai/zords in rangers, and I much prefer the combination sequence for this over the stupid zord builder crap that we've been getting for years now (seriously one of the worst changes to the PR toyline we've ever had to go through). Can't wait to get the set of these guys.
|
I guess I'm starting to warm up to the megazord design. I still can't get over the triceratops and mastodon's multiple legs, though.
And for $35.00 a zord I can' justify it. |
Still dont get why the Mastodon has 8 legs and the Trike has 6...
And the Mastodon and the Sabertooth should swap places... Overall though it's not as bad as i was expecting. The thing is bloody huge! |
I watched Bruno's video on it, and... I actually kinda like it. I currently doubt I'll get them, but I've warmed up on them significantly since first seeing the leaked image. I just kinda wish there was a smaller, maybe more collector oriented, version of it in the works.
Still not a huge fan of the Mastadon, but I'm warming up to it. I'm actually 100% ok with the Triceratops now. If I were ever to get them, I think I would end up displaying them seperated. I would also really want to do some paintwork on them. |
Finally had the chance to sit down and watch the video through. My overwhelming feeling is one of utter confusion. They spend every season since Samurai building this amazing gimmick in Zord Builder and then when the movie comes along they ignore it completely. I understand the show and movie are two different universes but that didn't have to stop them from using the same universal gimmick. In fact it probably would've helped sales and led to a more popular toy. The next thing that gets me is my Gosei that's a hell-of-a-lot of parts-forming. When you sit down and realize this is for kids, wtf were they thinking? What ten year old is going to have the patience for sitting down and dismantling all of that and even more patience to put the damned thing back together? It's like they completely forgot what drives MMPR isn't the story, or characters, it's toy sales. You could have the best written series in the history of PR with in-depth characters and amazing plot, but if the toys don't sell? Bye Bye Zordon. And these toys.. It's like they focused so hard on the movie they didn't realize until a month ago "Oh damn.. we gotta make toys!". It's.. confusing. But it isn't all negative I don't think. The overall designs of the zords have grown on me (I absolutely love Pink's Fighter-esque Pteradactyl). I like the size, it's nice having a large megazord again instead of the shrimpy ZB versions (I love ZB, don't get me wrong, but they could stand to be a little bigger). What I can't forgive really is the absolutely utter lack of paint. It's just solid color molded plastic after solid color molded plastic. But that's an overall BoA problem, really.
After seeing this, and knowing I for damned sure don't have the patience for all that parts-forming, I'm content with my decision to skip the movie Zords. There's just nothing here for me. |
There's like a weird stigma in Hollywood mechanics that if it's simple, it's can't be taken seriously. Look at the Marvel movies. Does Hawkeye really need itty-bitty arrowheads that transform like the Bay movie Transformers? Iron Man's suit just keeps getting more and more complicated. Falcon can't just have wings, they have to be metal super foldy-uppy wings that break physics entirely because they don't weigh a thing apparently. I'm surprised Cap's sheild isn't made of a million pieces that rotate and spin for no reason.
It's complexity for dummies. Complexity where you aren't rewarded for following the movement's and paths of parts as they change along a predeterimined scheme of conversion. Just a mess of shit. At least in the early Bay movies the TFs had so much kibble like wheels and shit that some parts still mattered where they went. Ultimately one form still looked like the other. Not here, not given what this Megazord look like compared to the non-transforming one. On the surface it's intricate, but in reality it's anything but, because nothing is intertwined or figured out. That's Hollywood in a nutshell. It makes you think there's a lot going on, but really it's just a swarm of meaningless noise. (you can decide whether or not that extendeds past just technology) These toys were doomed to fail. And yet still, there's things that can't be explained by the shit movie deisgns. Like the partsforming. I'm sorry, but the Dino Thunder Megazord, one of the most basic Megazords of the Pre-RPM era, managed to do the exact same trick with the T-rex head (abliet in reverse) without partsforming. Clearly this toy isn't accurate anyway, so why all the partsforming? Did the T-rex legs really need to detach? We have decades of transforming toys to look back on that tell us you can do better than that. And even ignoring that, the cheapness of the toys is even more inexcusable. Hollow, one-part limbs that look like cake moulds from the back. The T-rex limbs fixed in a pose for the sake of the Megazord that's useless in dinosaur mode. Barely any paint or colour seperation through plastic. The gimmicks are tacked-on and meaningless. There's no use of transparent plastics. It just screams cheap and worthless. EDIT: Also, I like Bruno, but his one comment on the video is hilariously pathetic. "Just save up!" $120 US? For a shitty toy? Why, for brand loyalty? A brand that is far too often not especially kind to its fans? His defending of this movie and its toys is rather... unconvincing. I seriously wonder who's actually going to buy this oversized mess. |

But yeah between this and Playmates Combining Voltron I know where I'd put my 120+$ |

I was really looking forward to this Megazord but there are several things I don't like about it that made me decide to skip it.
First, the fact that I had to buy each zord separately. It is just a stupid idea, I know this is how capitalism works but whatever, it's stupid. Second, the price. I will not spend more than $100 in a Megazord, I'm sorry but no. And I know there are plans of releasing a full set but from what I read it will cost $99.99 and that still a no for me. I'm currently starting to be independent, I have a rent to pay, a car to maintain, etc so for me right now spending that much on a toy is not an option. Even if I had the money I wouldn't spend it on it lmao. Third, the size. It is too big, I don't like big Megazords and I don't have the space for that. So I really hope they release a standard size version like the ones we get every season. But yeah, I really like the design, I've liked everything from the movie so far. Yeah, even Alpha, I love him and I wanna hug him ♥ |
