Power Rangers NINJA STEEL Episode 1: "Return Of The Prism" Discussion
The new season is upon us at last!
A young teen named Brody escapes to Earth from an alien spaceship with a special artifact called the Ninja Nexus Prism. He and two new friends must unlock its secrets to defend it from the villainous champion Galavanax! |
Watching it live right now. The contestant who lost was definitely Venjix's first body in RPM.
12:21 EDIT: They are not being subtle AT ALL about what Zords they're going to get. Also, calling it now, either Aiden or that class president guy is going to be the gold ranger. 12:24 EDIT: Apparently I'm watching Dino Charge, according to the commercial bumper. |
The commercial bumper said I was watching Dino Charge, and looking at the way the episode was constructed, they weren't wrong.
I liked the episode - mostly because we got a Fearcat and Venjix (even though not called as such) - I just wish it wasn't almost a carbon copy paste of Dino Charge's premiere episode. |
Pretty solid first episode. I like that they're taking their time with the plot, rather than rushing things to introduce as much as possible in the premiere. Should be interesting to see how things progress from here.
For the most part the acting was good... for Power Rangers anyways. Might be my tendency to not be a fan of the red Ranger, but I'm not at-all a fan of Brody. Still not sure what to think of Preston, but I am a fan of Sarah. She seems like she'll be a fun character through the series. |
Something felt off. That was not good.
|
Now that the episode has aired and I can see the credits:
Richard Simpson voiced Galvanax Tim Raby voiced Korvaka Andi Crown is the voice of the "Data Com" Jaque Drew voiced Madam Odius Campbell Cooley voiced Cosmo Royale and Ripcon Pierre Desmonts sang the theme song Interestingly, it also lists Kohji Mimura as Red Bot (with Byron Coll) as Red Bot's voice, but not Eric Beltran |
Wow that was terrible.
Okay, so firstly, I like the beat of the theme song but the lyrics are so cookie cutter. DC's theme had lyrics that I thought had depth to them but NS's doesn't. The actual show starts out okay. I like the space setting in the beginning. I greatly dislike how Brody bests Ripcon in the beginning but Paladin already said that so I'm not stealing his thunder. They somehow steal Galvanax's most prized possession, okay? The bad CGI falling from the sky scene, okay. Then it cuts to high school. It's not as annoying as I thought it would be. It doesn't take up too much room in the episode and that makes me think it's not going to be a thing later on. However, I wish they didn't show off the yellow and white rangers this episode so them arriving next episode would have more of an effect. Victor Vincent and the other kid I didn't find annoying actually either, even though I watched the opening and was like, "BULK AND SKULL RIP-OFF HOW STUPID!" I actually thought the trophy joke was kinda funny, just with how over the top his character is. Then the long advertisement break and... THEY STILL HAVE DINO CHARGE AT THE END OF THE ADS?!? *takes a deep breath* So, Brody falls to Earth, meets blue and pink, they transform, beat MOTW easily, basically a copy and paste of DC's first fight, only less exciting since they very easily and quickly succeed at killing the monster. I like how they're building a mystery with Brody's brother though. So overall, a bad episode with some good parts. Did I mention all Brody's lines sound forced and the beginning scene's acting was is cringe worthy? Save us Kyuranger. |
Hi, I'm a new guy and I liked this episode.
It had problems, mostly Brody and Preston not being that great, but they're new, the acting does improve, even in the bad season (Minus Troy). But I thought Hayley was good, and the jock guy could be amusing later on. Them not having Calvin and Sarah do anything is a bummer, especially when even in Dino Charge we got some look at Chase and Koda's personalities before they did anything. Mick was good too, and I like Redbot so far. Now, I wanna talk about the villains. Galvanax is another growly voiced generic conquer the world guy... but we all know he's not gonna be the real villain. Kyuemon is, again. I'm glad they made Kyuemon's counterpart a straight up lady, that will cause a whole lot less confusion. Ripcon... is going to die in about ten episodes, so who cares. Now, Cosmo Royale? That's a guy I can get behind. Really love them modifying the Baron Nero suit to make him, his face is wonderful. Him also carrying around the Buzz Cameras (Which are ADORABLE) is also wonderful, and I feel like he's going to be my favorite character in the entire show. I actually like them reusing the suits, it's some fun throwbacks for fans. It also proves that Toei really does not like throwing anything away. I feel this miiight be a thing they're doing for the anniversary thing? I dunno, but it's nice to see Hiramechimedes again. What I absolutely hated was the super obvious and annoying "Ninninger Galaxy" line. We get it, the new writer probably watches Sentai, it was cute when you made the Sentai 6 joke the first time, but it got old really fast. I'm honestly afraid that this might end up being a thing throughout the entire season, which is terrifying. Anyway, good start, looking forward to seeing how they handle the rest of the villains, particularly Mangetsu. |
The character Brody has really poor voice direction. His "excitement" was exciting. It comes across very Troy-esque. That's disappointing because as the leader he will need to be able to sell the audience on different ranges of emotion.

This could've been worse. And it could've been better. Over all...7/10? I wasn't thrilled when I saw that the MOTW was a reused villain suit from PROO. But it was a suit that I liked....so it gets a partial pass. Something else...this episode had NO ZORD FIGHT. OMFG!!!! *faints*

I think "clunky" is the best way to describe this episode.
First off, the actor playing Brody is... not very good. He reminds me of the Nostalgia Critic imitating M Night Shyamalan... Second, there's WAY too much exposition. Big violation of the "show, don't tell" rule of storytelling. Third, I'm not sure who decided Power Rangers needed a new version of Gaston & LeFou but they are easily the weakest part of this. The comedy they're trying does not work at all. On the other hand I am definitely interested in the universe they're trying to build & I do want to see more. I like Preston & Sarah & I want to learn more about Redbot & Mick (Kelson Henderson's character). The reuse of villain suits is cool too & I think there could be some very creative fights ahead. |
It was average. I wasn't blown away, but I also wasn't immediately turned off by anything. I'm in for a bit to see where it goes.
|
Not bad. Ticked off an awful lot of bad Neo Saban tropes, but I've always got time and appreciate for a premiere that's entirely original footage. And about as far from the source material as you can get.
Didn't realise Ninja Steel was going to be quite so literal, so that was pretty eyeroll inducing. Theme song is so-so. Liked the beginning but there's too much going on in it to work. Given Baron Nero a new head seemed both unnecessery and unfortunate as he looked terrible, but it was nice to see him in there some way I guess. As was the reuse of the old monster suits. |
First episode was okay. Nothing in it that really hooked me but it didn't completely annoy me either. Most of it's flaws are just something I don't like about pretty much every PR season. Like the villains sounding terrible. Storywise this show could go some interesting places though so I'll stick with it for the first year. Just hoping it won't lose me as quick as Dino Charge did.
|
Wow. Not a good wow. The kind of wow that comes from not believing this thing got made. The theme song is good. Great, actually. And the new origin for the power? That's alright too. But then we get into the performance, the decisions, why the hell is she called Madam Odius and why were they fighting a Fearcat. I tried. I watched. I deleted it from my DVR. I'll just sit here and hope the movie's good.
|
Not bad for a Neo-Saban season. I enjoyed it a lot tbh.
My only problem is that it was waaaay too similar to Dino Charge's premiere episode but yeah, in chip we trust lmao |
Just watched this outta curiosity, oh...my...god...what on Earth did they do to Gabi Raizou and Kibaoni Gengetsu?!?! Also, not good acting from Mr. Red either...
