Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Episode 17- "A NonStandard Burgster?" Discussion
Emu encounters a unique new type of enemy! What kind of powers will be needed to win?
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Oh.....why Burgermon must be killed by Genm when he protect his friend?
But, the one of good thing, we has new song in this episode, this song remind me to Rider Chips songs. Pallad starting angry to Kuroto..... Hmm..anyway, the Kamen Rider Chronicle game is almost complete and it seems in next episode, Genm Zombie Gamer will be defeated by Ex-Aid Mighty Brother XX. And, the truth about Emu will be become more clearer.... |
I think this ep shows some develop character for Parad.. i wonder he's angry because Dan messed up his funny showdown or because Dan killed burgermon ...
and didn't think that Dan killed burgermon so quick and just in 10s... and like a boss/jerk. |

'Wish in the Dark' eh? Sung by Masamune Dan's actor? Wonder what that means for him and his son, Kuroto...

Christ, we have a suicidal MotW, more tragedy, hinting at the big bads falling out and the preview for next week looks like something that usually shows up in the last 10 episodes. What is WITH this show?
|
I don't get Parad's change of attitude. Previous episode, he killed Revol like nothing and now he is disturbed that Genm killed Burgmon.
Was it because Burgmon was not a stupid npc like Revol and he actually cares about his fellow Bugsters when he is not fired up? All that aside, he does seem unhappy with Dan now...not smiling anymore. His personality is really like a paradox. On another note...the soundtrack for Ex-Aid keeps on impressing me. I thought this was just a filler but the ending of the episode left me satisfied. |

^ If Parad angry cause Burmon died then it's weird. back when Graphite died, Parad didn't care about it ...
still this is nice episode for Parad devoloping and our brutal end scene ... |

Too bad for Burgermon. I wish he stayed around throughout the show.
He'd be part of the comedy to the team. Joining Poppy. |

You know your Rider show is dark when even the light-hearted episode ends with the adorable pet monster getting blown the f up.

Actually, this episode really shows a lot of the differences writing-wise between Ghost and Ex-Aid. In addition to tackling a very similar plot in a much more emotional way, this is like, what, the third episode in a row now where the opening was cut to make room for more plot? That's how you know the writers seem passionate and have a clear story in mind to tell. As opposed to stumbling around blindly for a year, then completely giving up once the final form debuted and there were no more toys to sell. Boo on not letting Emu keep the gashat though. Hopefully we'll get to see the Juju Burger form again eventually, though I could see it being like Fourze's Rocket States and only showing up a couple times during the show, then getting used in like every crossover afterwards. I'm also interested to see what goes down next week. Nothing in the magazine scans implied a new bugster born from Emu, so what's going to happen when his disease seems to break out next episode? |
Although it's a pretty dumb form I wish Ex-Aid could've kept the gashat. I guess since Genm has it now we won't be seeing it anymore. That new insert theme for the fight was really good.
|
Genm taking away all things we love. =(
Loved Burgmon and Juju Burger Lv4 too. Great episode. |
I think it speaks volumes about Ex-Aid that an episode like this, which they had to make to promote some random one-off Gashat, which should have been pointless and unnecessary, manages to be not only relevant, but emotional and actually good. Because this was a good episode. Obviously silly, but very good.
That being said, I too found it a little weird for Parad to be so put-off by Burgermon's grisly murder when he mindlessly offed Revol last episode just for messing with his game, but I do think it makes some sense the more I think about it. At the least, Burgermon wasn't a combatant, and for all the other shit Parad has done he's never himself attacked, or been directly implicit in attacking, innocents (as far as I can remember). The fights he's engaged in are that, fights, in a game setting. And Parad has always been into fair play. Back during the more episodic...episodes of the first arc, his whole thing was letting things play about and seeing whether the humans or Bugsters would turn out victorious. Just a couple episodes ago he stepped in to fight Snipe and Brave because Ex-Aid wasn't willing to--actually, looking back, he looked pretty unhappy about that situation then too. What happened to Burgermon was just a murder. Another thing though, is that I wish they'd go a little more into Poppi being a Bugster and all that. Her reprimand of Hiiro calls back to the fact that she herself is one, but we still don't know how or why. After this episode we can infer that she didn't necessarily have to kill her host to stay around, but that only raises more questions. I wish they'd address all this soon. This episode would have been a good one to get into it, but oh well. Anyways. Did you see how Kuroto started doing a thing? https://i.gyazo.com/a03c2c79000ec9f4...89b2ec133e.png What the hell, dude. This is doing like the opposite of making you more threatening! Also the insert song was p good. Anyway, yeah, good ep. |

Yup, i agree and curious is poppy gonna play big role somehow? Because all cast seems kinda ignored her existence as bugster, also yeah palad seems back pedal after last week he is kinda mindlessly killing revol IMO this episode is your standard neo heshei silly episode but somehow the writer kinda put it well because unlike gaim silly episode this well placed nicely, and i wonder the juju gashad maker will play big role for making maximum mighty gashat since he is able to develop gashat |
Ok, this episode cements it for me. Ex-Aid is completely amazing. Not only is it far enough in that I think the starting hype has died down and it's still so well liked, but they managed to take a comic relief/promotional toy episode, tie it into the plot in so many places, add some really heart wrenching moments, and still make it funny and weird! Someone on the staff must really love this show or something, because it continues to impress.
(and it keeps making me want to buy the toys. I didn't want JuJu Burger before and now I kinda do!) Also, I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but there's one other major difference between Revol's death and Burgermon's death: Revol was absorbed into the Bugvisor and has a chance to respawn. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure Burgermon is "GAME OVER" dead at this point. |
Quote:
Like he said, Burgmon's death served no real purpose. Revol was at least absorbed, and he was being a punk for hitting Parad. |
Episode thoughts:
All in all, good episode but honestly Ex-Aid is currently in this weird state where I consider it good but I'm not really interested in it. I don't know, maybe I'm burnt out of Kamen Rider, maybe everyone's praise of it is dulling my perception, but despite hitting most of the notes of what I consider a good show, I'm not really ecstatic to see the next episode. |
Definite step up from last episode. Kinda crazy, Ex-Aid doing another tonal whiplash episode - though I was kind of expecting it this time.
My thoughts: 1. Nice to see Emu doing something outside the CR, if even only for a minute. If I have any complaint about Ex-Aid, it's how compact it feels; most of the outdoor scenes are stages and most action is in the hospital or around it. Last episode when Hiiro and the Director were talking in front of the picture window and you could see the "real world" outside (some trees, a parked car) - it felt more "grounded". Ex-Aid is so bizarre and otherworldly, scenes like that go a long way for me. 2. I don't really care but, Niko is clearly there to give Taiga / Snipe a reason to open his mouth. Her arc is over already, it seems and, like Taiga, doesn't have any real reason to be around. 3. Snipe was brutal with the Burgmon beat down! 4. I loved the Burgmon bit with the "spilling your ketchup - I mean, blood!" 5. Pallad is all about the game. The point of Revol is to defeat him by blowing him up (and he didn't actually die, he was absorbed into Genm's Bugvisor, whining all the way). Defeating Burgmon was to make him a badass burger and make him smile. He was defeated once Ex-Aid finished that task. What Dan did was outside the rules of the game and pretty much pointless murder. Pallad has shown again and again that he's into fair play and continuing the game; killing everyone would end all that pretty fast. So, for Pallad, Kurota is now a threat to his entire reason for existing. I doubt this means he'll be a straight good guy, I think this just means he's a wild card anti-hero. 6. Love Perfect Puzzle's design with the "smart guy" glasses and devillock. This show is crazy! |

I think I will have to abstain from voting in the poll this week because there is no "I don't know how I feel!" option. This episode authentically made me question if I was actually awake. I thought it was nice to have a bit of a breather episode, and it even moved the plot forward a bit too. Taiga and Niko amuse me, Dan and Parad's relationship continues to deteriorate, and the whole thing was just amazingly cracktastic and surprisingly savage (again).
Did anyone else see the ad for the new Super Hero Taisen at the end? Looks like Kiriya is coming back. I'm sure that decision wasn't influenced by the fans flipping out at alllll. |
Parad mad at Dan for pointlessly murdering a Bugster. It seems that Pallad is all for fair play. And yet, Kuroto Dan stands out as the villain precisely because he's so gloriously evil. Make a bootleg game? Screw you and the horse you rode on, I am going to kill your surrogate son in retaliation. In essence, he's the complete opposite of Alain/Necrom's brother, Adel. And I love him for it.

Man, this episode was fantastic.
Everything to the low-key reaction shots, the fights, and that pre-Decade sounding insert song was top notch. It might actually be one of my favorite episodes so far. |

Cool episode, but I'm a sucker this plot in Toku, so that goes without saying:
- *sees title card instead of opening for third week in a row* Dang it, Ex-Aid! Although this week actually used the theme song in an appropriate place, and if it does mean a minute of extra time for stuff, it's not all bad. I just can't shake the feeling this is less the writers REALLY needing the space and more a failure to get it edited down properly. - I'm totally nitpicking here, but Emu, if you're already taking the big clunky belt with you, are 4 Gashats really that much more space? Or even just one of the Level 3 ones? I guess I appreciate the attempt at giving a reason for the main Rider to use their main form (and in this case Level 4), but come on, it wouldn't be the first time someone in this show has inexplicably decided to go with their main form over a more powerful one. - Love the action scenes with Level 4. Very 90's! Probably the kind of action people were expecting when they first saw the neon suits for the show. - What in the heck is Dan doing when he transforms? Come on man, how am I gonna take you seriously as a villain when you're so dang wacky? :lol Quote:

Even this episode, cool as it was, is a stock plot done at about a stock level, right down to the status quo restoring ending, and there really wasn't much in the way of Plot significance when you get down to it. Basically the only thing long-term that happened was Pallad getting angry at Dan. Like, Snipe was here just to have a Rider to attack the Bugster so Emu could go "no, don't attack the Bugster!", and beyond that role he just did his one note with Niko that he's been doing for weeks now. I guess time will tell if this episode DOES have some big deep meaning to the show overall (and if Ex-Aid really makes "the one with the burger monster" a significant chapter in its story, it will probably have earned the praise), but when Drive and Ghost did this exact plot, it had WAY more relevance to what was going on in the larger narrative. The question of whether or not a Roidmude could be good played into Chase's arc, and making nice with the Ganma was the theme of that entire quarter or so of Ghost. Here? Genm delivers a token line to Emu at the end that's of little real meaning? I just don't see how this is much better than what we've been getting. |

Neat episode, I wouldn't say fun cause... well Burgmon died. But hey, the rest of it was nice.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting thing to note is that Genm now seems to be actively trying to get Emu/M's Bugster to appear. We saw strike one when he tried to take the Mighty Brothers away in front of Hiiro, strike two is in this episode with Taiga seeing it this time, and I'm guessing strike three will be next episode with Emu/M's Bugster finally leaving M's body. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We see Dan working on the Gear Dual Beta with Taddle Quest already in the "Version Up" phase (I don't think that's an actual stage in gave development). And I just thought of something while typing this post. While we know from magazine scans that the Gear Dual Beta is supposed to be Brave and Snipe's power up. There is no in-universe reason for Dan to be developing another Lvl 50 Gashat unless... He was planning on using it for himself to be unkillable and fully on par with Parad. Meaning that Parad giving it to Brave or the CR in episode 19 is gonna be (in my opinion) super hilarious. Parad: "Oh, you're saying Bugsters aren't important for Kamen Rider Chronicle? Well F-you, I'm gonna c-block you out of getting an entire mid-season upgrade." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lastly, I'm using Excite Subs so this might not have actually happened word for word in the episode but. Ex-Aid's first words upon obtaining a food based upgrade: "Eat this, Snipe!" Me: slow claps |
Genm if you kill one more lovable character I am going to take back all the nice things I said about the Dangerous Zombie suit.
|
Props to Ex-Aid for not only giving us a great episode after, imo, its first weaker entry of the series last week, but also giving us a great episode out of a common toku trope.
Burgemon's death was similar to Medic killing the good Roidmude in Drive to me, though perhaps moreso because the character was definitely more like Kubi in Ghost, a recognizable design rather than a generic design only it's a good guy. I did think he'd end up being a supporting character which just makes his destruction more surprising. JuJu Burger is a surprisingly fun form. The roller blades just make it work and helps gives the fight scenes more flavor. As for Parado's reaction to Dan killing Burgemon, I think it makes sense. As stated, all the previous Bugster deaths at his and Dan's hands had been for reasons. Graphite was power-hungry and didn't play by the rules. Last week's Bugster attacked him, again not playing by the rules. That's the sort of theme Parado follows. If the rules of the game aren't fairly followed, he'll dispose of the problem. In this case, Burgemon was a meaningless kill that Dan followed through because Bugsters mean nothing to him other than being fuel for his ambitions and as punishment for the creation of JuJu Burger without his knowledge. Being a Bugster himself, it makes sense for Parado to suddenly be weary of Dan if he'd go out of his way to kill a Bugster that literally posed no threat to him. |
Great episode. The "Not all enemies are bad"-episodes tend to be among the best of the entire season and this one was no different. Burgemon was cute, the new form even though probably a one-off was fun, the roller-skates added a nice touch for the action scenes. I loved how they realized that fighting Burgemon does not mean killing him but playing by the rules of Juju Burger, so giving him a yummy burger was enough to clear the game.
I also like the relationship between Taiga and Niko a lot. They seem like an old couple with all the bickering, it’s really funny. And then the last scenes – oh no. When they cured the host and Burgemon was still there I was so happy that they repeated an element of Ghost’s “Not evil” - episode and had the monster survive but nope – Dan. I was cursing out loud as soon as he and Pallad showed up; I knew poor Burgemon wouldn’t make it. Oh dear. Emu seems like he’s really loosing it now and for good reason – first Kiriya and now Burgemon. So yeah, fun episode all around, I enjoyed it a lot. |
I really liked this episode. They could have just made this another pointless power up episode but they decided to actually make it interesting and do some character development. By the way, did anyone else notice Parad playing with his Gashat when he and Dan confront Emu and Taiga? It was really brief but it was so perfect for his character.
