You thought the movie was the only thing huh? It will be done by Adi Shankhar, who made a dark reimagining of the franchise in 2015. Billed as an animated version of PR with DBZ elements, it'll be of the first 3 seasons of the original show

I'm going to get a lot of shit for this, but fuck it. I want to see this. I want to see just how far they are willing, and will, go. Bring it on!!!

But if this 'Dark' Power Rangers Reboot will be the retelling of first 3 season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,

I wonder if they will cut out the cheesy moment from those 3 seasons like Bulk and Skull one? They're too funny for this one and would ruin the tone unless you change their personality or just don't add them

Having the idea and actually getting Saban to go along with it are two totally different things. Even if Netflix approves, Saban will quickly end the project before it even gets off the ground so I don't see this actually happening..which is a good thing, because I'm getting tired of people thinking that PR/Toku needs to pander to the adult crowd. That's not what the series is and it looses it's charm when people make it something it's not. That's why I can't get behind the Bootleg Power Rangers and why I can't get behind this.

Dark Power Rangers animated reboot coming soon?
 

Adi Shankar has revealed that he has scripts ready for an animated reboot of Power Rangers, which will be darker and more serialised than the original show.

“It’s a complete retelling of the first three seasons,” Shankar said. “And it’s going to be really f***ing dark. Darker than any other Power Rangers series.”

He has a couple of networks interested, but he wants to produce it through Netflix. What does everyone think of this? It could be quite cool telling a more adult continuing story across a season.

It's not out of touch, they don't want to do it like the show. They want to do it like Rita et al are an actual threat.

Not that I even care or agree with it, but you keep bringing up whata show is "supposed" to be when it's clearly not the way they want it to be.

I wonder if I will care about any of the rangers.

Yeah. For a few reasons...

- It takes wayyyyyyy longer to develop and animate a show than 18 months.
- There's no mention of Saban being involved, and like...
- There's zero chance Saban, Bandai, or Toei would approve something that would dilute/pervert their brand like this.
- Also, CBR credits this guy as the showrunner of the new Castlevania animated show but he's not. He's the exec producer, and Warren Ellis is the showrunner. Not getting nitpicky, just pointing out that the writer/website isn't really concerned with fact checking.
- Finally, there's no network or production company attached, so...

Yeah, this ain't happening. (I'd probably watch it if it did, though, tbh)

They would have to make new designs and new names which will probably take at least 2 years. Unless he wants to make a show based on the new movie which he would just need Saban's permission.

Wait, you mean that thing wasn't satire? It was called Power/Rangers. With a "/". And the whole thing was really over the top. I could've swore the whole point of it was to make fun of Hollywood/fans for demanding goofy nostalgic properties get "dark" reimaginings.

Like, the idea that anyone would produce something like that in earnest seems impossible to me.

There's no way in hell Saban would let someone outside the company work on Power Rangers to this extent. Not to mention that he already sent a C&D to this guy before when he did Bootleg Power Rangers.

I didn't say they can't make the villains an actual threat. The Gorma in Dairanger, the Youkai in Kaku, Bandora and her crew in Zyu, and the Rinshi in Geki all show you can have fun while keeping the villains threatening.

I'm talking about the tones and the spirit. I don't need the rangers to be angsty pretentious jackoffs just because it's the cool thing to do.

I couldn't agree more with this. It bugs the hell out of me when people say that PR/Toku needs to be darker/edgier. That's not what the show is, and when you have stuff like Bootleg Power Rangers it misrepresents what these characters are suppose to be.


Well...that's what the Lionsgate movie is for so this reboot is really unneeded.

They should just make a Bulk and Skull spinoff that looks like a reboot of Ren and Stimpy than waste their money on this possible dumpster fire of an abomination.

Much as I want this, it seems unlikely, as Saban loves MMPR-cash in nostalgia more than everything (except his money of course).

At best, I think it's going to have the same tone as Voltron Legendary Defender, which would be ideal.

This live action movie is going to be the dark reboot we'll get and already I think it's too much. You just can't make PR dark.

That was the original intent. Like, the guy's comments from just before it was released all point in that direction and then it gets released to positive buzz and...I he bought into it. At this point, this guy is the last person I would want to directly be involved with a "mature" take on anything. He knows how to satirize stuff, but I don't think he can use those skills to make a well done, balanced show.

But my point isn't that it is or isn't Power Rangers, my point is that it's not really a disconnect if they are going theough great lengths to avoid it.

I think the point of what Power Ranger is (tone, spirit) is quite known (and therefore not out of touch) and instead of being embraced it's being completely ignored.

That's my only point.

But it doesn't matter though when people see other superhero movies and now that they're older, they expect that maturity to transfer to what they remember (with nostalgia glasses) as a kid.

They don't get the correlation that superhero films and their related media are pretty much the same across the board. They like Power Rangers, and so they want to see a more mature take on them, even if it doesn't fit their characters.

I'm excited for the movie because it just looks good, but I personally appreciate the camp of what I grew up with. But you go to the MMPR movie page and read the comments there and its people who are excited for the movie because it's what they think it's how it was growing up and it's not.


Again, this could pander to the masses in regards to the "cool" factor. But let's be realistic here, it won't go far without Saban's blessing and who knows, if this movie does well, he might get it.

You can make Power Rangers dark just not too dark. For proof look at RPM and maybe Space I have not seen Space in years so I am not sure if its a good example. Power Rangers can be dark but it takes a lot of effort to balance dark with the spirit of the series to make it just right.
