Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 6- "Fly High, Dancing Star!" Discussion
Commander Xiao Lonpo has a unique idea to beat the new Jark Matter forces- dancing! What kind of KyuTama will this create???
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Pega-san aka Pegasus Kyutama is voiced by Masaki Terasoma, who we all love and remember as many iconic characters in Tokusatsu.

Wow, the love for this show seems to have ebbed, eh? I'm watching with my 8 year old niece - much better when viewed within the intended context, IMO.

Man, I didn't expect for this thread to be so quiet like this. Well, considering a lot happened in the neighbouring thread, it's kinda understandable. To be honest, this episode is as enjoyable as Ex-Aid's latest episode. Maybe not so much in the action-packed scene but the way they handle the whole plot in this episode is clever. First of all, I know that a lot of people hates that Kyuranger will stay on Earth for maybe a good chunk of the series. But, admittedly, it might be better this way since they can give a lot of focus to the series itself.
Second, I know that many people will disagree with this but I like Lucky more than Yamato in this case. The series establishes itself for giving a reason that Lucky ISN'T just a "Yossha Lucky" type of guy. As this episode told, Lucky brings every dynamic and fortune that happens of the series. It might be stupid but well that's the reason why he managed to grab Balance and Naga, encouraging Raptor to become a Kyuranger, and also separating Stinger and Champ. One must know what would happen if he isn't in the series to begin with. It's kinda weird to have the heroes to fight while dancing around. However, I didn't actually expect for the Kyutama dancing to be so creative like this and could be used for battle. That's one cookie for the show. I also the Commander's antics; he is oblivious to every things in the series yet he is so skilled to lie on everyone. Garu and Hammy's relationship is explored in this episode too and I really want to explore more about Hammy and some pre-Lucky's arrival Kyurangers' past even more. Since this a whole nine member or more Rangers series, I'm looking forward how they could dig more about the Ranger's relationship between themselves. |
This was… pretty okay actually. I did not expect the Pegasus armor to talk, that mixed things up a bit, and I liked it. The dance practice parts were fun, but I feel like they make Lucky too simple. I don’t like the whole "He’s always optimistic and thus lucky and also works hard so he wins" kinda deal, it’s too boring. It’s a good role model I guess but I prefer more complex characters. It doesn't have to be overly complicated, but Sentai can do better than Lucky, it did so last year. But they had a nice save at the end when they said they don’t need a leader and I can agree with that.
Sadly the little development for Hammy still didn’t win me over; she’s my least favorite character. I don’t know if the actress is at fault or if it’s the character writing that annoys me but I can’t stand her. What I did like a lot are those two octopus guys. First their designs are really good, the VA’s are doing a perfect job and they could really shake things up a bit more which is exactly what this show needs right now IMO. So yeah, probably my favorite episode so far. Which isn’t saying a whole lot but still. Also, Ex-Aid crossover next week? I would get excited but it looks like the days where we would get a real crossover are over. Now it seems like this is Taisen territory where both shows tell a little story of their own and then come together for the last few minutes. I really miss stuff like the Gaim X ToQger special, that one was really fun. Quote:

And just between me and you... *whispers* He was Shugozyu Saber FREAKIN Tiger...... Also he made many guest roles here and there as a voice actor AND live action actor i.e. Fiveman, Solbrain, Ninninger, etc. What really helps is that he is an Osakan head-to-toe so he has the Kansai dialect on point as demonstrated 10 years ago in Den-O as Kintaros. Heck, he is a proud Hanshin Tigers fan so must be legit. Kinda off topic but for those not familiar Hanshin Tigers is one of Japan's prominent pro baseball teams who are rivals with the Yomiuri Giants. It is almost on par with in toku-layman's terms Gaim VS Baron, Kabuto VS Gatack, Bouken Red VS Bouken Black, Geki Red vs Rio, Chase VS Mach, etc. You get the idea. |
I totally loved this freaking episode, the dancing, the pegasus armor. Shou Ronbou just stealing the show with his hilarious leadership is amazing. Loved Naga Rei's fourth wall breaks and wanting to be leader. Spada didn't actually have much for once, even though he's one of my favorites I'm glad it's jumping all over the place with who's getting focus. Raptor had so many great scenes with her daydreams she is one of my favorite pinks in a while. Garu and Hammy's tension with each other was fun. I felt like Hammy was really envious of Lucky and I didn't feel like she had the right reasons to think she could be a good leader. Stinger vs the two new Generals was awesome, I love their designs and Stinger continues to be badass. Champ and Balance were like Spada not having much except for the dancing scenes and flashbacks with Champ and Spada; though the Dancing scenes and the coordinated fight scenes with everyone was brilliant. I loved Lucky and Mr. Pega and that Lucky continued to train till he got the hang of it. This is such a fantastic show right now and I can't wait for more.

This episode was stupid and the show has no charm to support that kind of episode. Any goodwill this show might've had with the designs, themes, and setting has been used up now. I wanted to like and enjoy this show, but I hate it.

I actually liked this episode. Between Garu and Hammy's rivalry, Stinger vs the two generals (I'm guessing that they're generals since they forced the almighty Stinger to retreat) and dance sequences, this episode was enjoyable.
Also, Raptor 238 is adorable with her daydreams while Balance and Naga Rey were amusing with their vignettes. But the real question is, when will Champ and Sparda receive the limelight? |

Please, god, let the Pegasus become a full blown ranger.
Anyway, this episode felt super meta, basically taking every common issue and saying "That's not how it is!" And I know they can't actually be addressing it, since this was filmed weeks ago. Lucky is all just random chance! How can we ever connect with him!? "Lucky isn't just walking luck. He's eternal energy and optimism!" Xiao isn't complex! He's just throwing darts and rolling with whatever sticks! "No, Xiao is actually very observant in his ways, and clearly knows what he's doing." Xiao is kind of obnoxious. *Has Naga basically disbelieving everything he comes up with* Anyway, this episode was tolerable, but I hesitate to call it good. Mainly because I still don't like Lucky. "Wha? But he didn't drop Yoshu Lucky a million times this episode!" Just because he's not spamming his obnoxious catch phrase doesn't mean I don't have other issues with him. He's so uninteresting and bland. I really just can't get into things when he's around. Hammy's story bits were fine. I can understand where her frustration came from (I'd be pretty pissed too if I trained my whole life only for some random jackoff to show up and get everything he wants because "YOSHA LUCKY"). Garu was there, too. Using the Kyulette in this episode was kind of unfair. They would've determined who would've gotten the leadership role based on performance, then didn't let 3 of the nominees get a chance. Pegasus was pretty neat. I do hope he comes back. Especially if he can come back as a real boy, not just a breast plate. Perhaps the clips on KyurenOh's back aren't for Washi Pink, but a possible Pegasus Voyager? :p |

I think this was easily the least impressive episode so far, and partly because of that it's also easily the best. This was just a very standard episode of Sentai in a very good way. It feels like the show really did slow down a bit now that the pieces are in place and just gave us a nice, simple, character-building story without relying on flash to carry everything. For one, I still love how the characters all get their little moments to reinforce their personality. Raptor's still a daydreamer, Garu is still quick to stick up for Lucky, Naga constantly making the wrong faces (and by the way for someone who I was expecting to just be "Spock, but not" I love the direction they went with him). Good stuff. I REALLY like how they started to elaborate on Lucky here, though. Optimism seems to be something of a theme to the series and since Lucky is the mouthpiece for that it was great to see them show why there's merit to his exceptionally simple approach to life. I wasn't totally convinced before, but I think Lucky is actually showing potential to straight up be one of the better Reds out there if they continue to refine his character like this. He's already come a long way from that first episode. As for the more minor stuff: - I'm fond of the whole "we don't need a leader!" direction but I can't be as enthusiastic about it as I want to be since ToQger already did that perfectly. - Pega-san is pretty cool. I wasn't dreading his presence or anything but I didn't expect to like him nearly as much as this episode made me. - Balance's narration for the preview was really funny. The episode can't possibly live up to it. So, yeah, I think Kyuranger has been on a fairly steady uphill path so far. I really hope the momentum doesn't stop. Quote:

6 episodes in and my hype for this show hasn't stopped. This was probably the best paced episode we had yet. It elaborates the character traits most specifically Lucky, Hammy and Xiao. The Pegasus Kyutama provides an interesting addition to the teams arsenal and opens potential stories for future Kyutamas due to the nature of how it works. There's set up for future stories with the introduction of the assassins. The dance fight scene was pretty entertaining and overall this episode was just fun. That's really the best way I can describe why I like the show as of right now. Perhaps it doesn't have the best characterization, perhaps it doesn't execute it's ideas to their fullest potential, but there's just this enthusiasm to the show that makes me enjoy it.

Just no . . . the episode I guess was ok but damn do I not care for most of the rangers. The only thing I actually liked about this episode was the scenes with Stinger and the assassins and when they were fighting the MOTW he used human troopers as a wall to keep them from attacking. That was actually good thinking. So far the only rangers I do like are Naga, Stinger, Balance, and Raptor. I do hope the show at least helps me like Xiao more than I do now or he will be my least favorite purple ranger.

Well This episode umm okay Stinger Have a cool scene and Naga is good with breaking fourth wall, i agree most of Hammy Line about Lucky, noo i am not sold about lucky character with just short montage dancing.
This show is amazing considering have so many things but so little to say about the character and thats kinda amazing... |
I'm usually on the fence with an episode like this which has a more light-hearted tone and then I check myself for the fact that this show is ultimately aimed at a younger audience does bring me back to reality.
All things considered it was a pretty good episode. Storyline progression, no potential long-term baddies, a new rivalry between Hammy and Garu, the new dynamic between the Commander and Naga basically calling BS on all his tall tales. Its pretty good set up. Stinger being the "spy" of the team seems redundant since everyone in Jark Matter probably knows that he betrayed them but hey, the galaxy is a big place and maybe the Malistrates don't talk to each other in a feudal lord-ish manner so its plausible why a couple of Jark Matter assassins who have probably been "out of town" for awhile wouldn't know him. |
This week kinda slowed down my hype for Kyuranger a little, I am not sure if its cause the episode was a little slower than others or if its cause i watched Ex-Aid immediately before Kyuranger
I loved Naga breaking the wall to call out Commander Crazy as i now call him and Raptor's little dreams which are always cute Using the end theme to teach the dance was pretty neat, seemed alot of this episode was meta and wall breaking Pegasus Kyutama was a nice edition and did remind me of the Lion Ha-Oh from Ninninger, A Pegasus Voyager would have been fun even if for one episode It did seem Lucky got bashed this week but somehow as usual managed to come out of it I haven't decided where i come down on liking him or not The Crossover seems kinda pointless for both Ex Aid and Kyuranger, ToQger/Gaim and Drive/Ninninger were great crossovers rather than Ghost/Zyuohger which was two basic episodes with Zyuoheagle and Ghost turning up in each others episodes for a few minutes fighting and wandering off Although it seems next weeks Kyuranger despite the Ex Aid appearance will be a comedic adventure staring Naga and Balance so that will be fun and hopefully bring Kyuranger back up for me But there is one lesson to be learnt Watch Kyuranger before Ex Aid from now on :) |
This is why I keep watching. Even if it's a week back.
I have such high hopes for Lucky's character not being 49 episodes of wanting to smack my head into a wall. There's so many good elements from this show being able to not just be fun galactic adventure, but also have some form of plot other than literally telling us it's going to be a motw on the same planet. For now I keep waiting. And getting drunker by every 'Yosha Lucky'. Even the show runners know by now that the tropes will hold true. |

But seriously, I was really into this episode. Solid development for Hammy. Interesting metatextual commentary about Lucky that acknowledges that he's not everyone's cup of tea. Fun talking armor. Cool that there's no leader (although, I would have loved if Hammy was made leader and the whole episode was just Xiao putting her through her paces -- I mean, I guess it was that, but the outcome just wasn't what I expected). And I continue to be impressed that, even when a character isn't selected by the Kyulette, they still find ways to involve him/her in the story. This was just a solid episode of Sentai all around. It was probably the most standard-issue Sentai episode of the show so far, and that familiarity helps ground things in a nice way. |

We all know that RED is always the defacto leader regardless. 🙆 |

They can't make the robotz without him. For now.
Personally, I'm with Hammy. Lucky is just freaking annoying. I'll watch for the other 8 characters. Is it wrong for me to wish for a main show running female Red for just ONE sentai series? |
I guess I should be grateful we got one sentence from Hammy to tell something about herself, but how about just giving us a full god damn story dedicated to her instead of Lucky? Also, is it just me, or did the scene with the ending theme when everyone started to dance together just end so abruptly? Once again I felt the plot of episode 6 should have been a two parter. Why is Toei rushing this show when they have an entire year?
