Not mine, but Jeremy Jahns give it a fairly good review.
Power Rangers - Movie Review. I'm actually really glad it's getting good reviews. I was worried it'd be the next Jem movie, but it seems like that's not the case. |
DenOfGeek also has a positive review, although this may contain mild spoilers (nothing that hasn't really been seen in trailers though):

So, Zeo Crystals, and the reference to Mariner Bay and Reefside. Pretty awesome.
|
If the Zeo crystal ever ends up beign a source of new powers, will they keep the MMPR cast I wonder?

If they're planning this far in advance they probably know about when they'd like to change any characters and I bet the contracts for the actors were written accordingly.

This movie was better than I expected it to be. And I expected to at least have a good time.
I got a kick out of the fact that they took the Krispy Kreme product placement to a whole other level. And the mid credits scene where Tommy Oliver is mentioned by name got me hyped for a possible sequel. I don't know if this is just me, but I feel like a big thing that was missing was the actual use of the morphers or some take on the classic morph. I also still feel like Goldar was done so horribly wrong. Other than that, the movie was great in my opinion. That 1995 theme, though. |
I left the theater at 9pm and still have a smile on my face at 1:30am from enjoying it that much. I thought everything was great, and the movie was that much better due to the ways they changed story details from what the show had established. The simple fact that Zordon's origin was actually explained is worthy of applause in itself!

I was really expecting trash when going into the movie tonight, nothing leading up to it really had me convinced I was going to have a good time. Maybe it was lowered expectation, but I really enjoyed myself. I'm checking it out again Monday so I'm curious to see if my opinion changes after the hype has a weekend to cool off.
The suits and individual Zords looked quite a bit better in motion, but I still hate the Megazord design. I liked what they did with it, but that thing needs a serious overhaul for movie 2 if we get it. The only real new complaint I had was the little niblet of a theme song we got. It kicked off and the hype train kicked into maximum overdrive but it fizzled out after 5 seconds and never came back. It really should have been over the Zord onslaught in the town. I also really love when movies go all out on product placement. I loved the Bud Light in Age of Extinction, and I loved that Krispy Kreme was a major plot point. Either go big or go home. I'm also really jonesing for some donuts now. I think I'll get fat on a box of those Ranger donuts tomorrow. |
so what Easter eggs did you catch?
I caught Jason being the last one to leave with the same crossed arms. Mariner Bay. Alpha doing his aiyaiyai. Obviously the Zeo crystal. |

The best part of the movie was either when they recreated this with the MMPR theme

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I'm probably going to go back and see it again if I get a chance!
Although, I was kind of confused at the very beginning. Did the movie start off black with just sound for the first 2 minutes or so? Or did my theater guy just mess the playing up? I thought it was an accident at first but when Jason turns on the flashlight I thought it might be intentional. I was just kinda confused. I went in with very low expectations, having been following this as it's been evolving. I never actually hated any of the designs, I just wasn't in love with them. The movie itself did tremendous justice to every design that I didn't care for, except maybe Goldar, who should have had at least a "RANGERS!" thrown in there in his classic Goldar-y voice. I found that my least favorite part was showing how the Megazord formed. It was a bit too smokey to actually see what was going on, and then you just have a giant (awesome-looking) robot standing there. Those were the only real issues I had with it. There were honestly a LOT more good points than I was expecting: Trini - as someone who is LGBT, she hit home really hard for me. I'm a 20-year old man, and I shed tears at her story. Good job with her character. Billy - I loved having him be "on the spectrum" as he put it. Plus the fact that Jason wasn't a d--- to him was great. Plus his refusal to curse was hilarious. Zordon - He seems a lot more narcissistic in the movie than I remember him being when I watched the series (yes, I watched it even though it was before my time), and I kind of liked it. He cared more about coming back to life than helping the rangers, although I felt that this point could have been expanded upon more. Social issues - While it was somewhat blunt, they tackled a lot of social issues, such as coming out, mental stigma, and the thing that Kimberly did. And it handled them well. Easter eggs - Need I say more? Especially Bumblebee and the end. You could tell who the fans were in the theater because we SWOONED. Overall, I had a great time, even though I was by myself. I was thrilled. If I had to give it a score, 8/10 |
Man, that Tommy teaser really appealed more than I thought it would.
To me it's like the most obvious thing they could've done given his ridiculous popularity. |
The movie was much better than I was anticipating. I really enjoyed the cast and the movie was fun throughout. Personally, the movie started to fail once everyone became a power ranger. The putties weren't very exciting, Goldar was just a thing, and I wasn't into his design either. Rita was very intimidating throughout but then she just stepped aside for Goldar at the end. I would have loved to see Rita have a fight with the ranger, then call upon Goldar and maybe when she combined with him Goldar could have at least looked more like the Goldar we all know. Also, not having Goldar explode was pretty disappointing. Also, the lack of a transformation for the megazord was a huge bummer. That's what I was looking forward to the most. I'm excited to see a sequel though. Even though Rita was basically an evil green ranger, I would love to see what they could do with tommy in the sequel. I hope the dragonzord stays close to the original design.

Linkara had good things to say about this movie.

I didn't mind having the Rangers use their suits and Zords until the final act. It was nice build up since it give time to developed the rangers. I think having Dino Rangers million of years ago was cool. It was a nice homage to Zyuranger.

This movie made my mom cry. A lot. I think that says a lot about some of the touching characters scenes that really took me by surprise. All of the rangers were well done in my opinion, and most importantly of all, they legitimately felt like real teenagers to me. The petty issues they had, or they way they dealt with the more serious ones. The way they played, teased, and joked around with each other, and the rashness of some of their decisions. I found it all pretty relatable. Their chemistry was great too, I thought.
This movie did a lot of things I wasn't expecting, and I loved that. It played with cliched expectations at least twice. When their van is being chased by the quarry security vehicles towards an oncoming train, and you just know they're gonna make it in the knick of time and cut off their pursuers? NOPE. They get hit by the damn train in such a brutal way that the entire audience didn't even know how to respond. When Rita supposedly drowns Billy, and after a beat of suspense you just know that he's going to cough up water and everyone will laugh and cry tears of joy? NOPE. "Guys, he's dead!" He straight up dies for real. Whoa, what? I mean - I put the whole "Zordon gives up his 1-Up to save the kid" thing together pretty quickly - but even then, I was not expecting that kind of scary and very real heaviness from this movie. I'll say that the mecha action definitely left a little to be desired on a lot of levels. It was fine; definitely passable for the Ranger's first outing as a team in their Zords, but it still had me wanting a little more. The robots themselves didn't feel heavy enough. Their punches, and blasts, and rams didn't carry enough weight to them for me. I guess what I'm saying is that they didn't seem powerful enough. Honestly, when I heard that the Megazord combination was fairly under-glorified, I was super bummed out. That said, personally, I didn't have much of a problem with the sequence for what it was. What I AM bummed about is that instead of giving the Megazord an actual power sword, they just use the Pterodactyl wings as dual blades. I was hoping for something similar to Daizyujin's signature attack for finishing off Goldar, but maybe they'll give us something like that in the sequel. Definitely hoping we also get weapons for the other rangers and an actual morphing sequence (using the buckles; away from the Morphing Grid room) in the sequel as well. I friggin' loved it when the Power Rangers theme started playing (complete with lyrics no less! :thumb:) as the Zords rolled into battle, but I really do wish that the song kept going on for longer. I feel like they cut the theme short right before "Mighty Morphin Power Raaangeeers!" is said - perhaps to distance this movie series from specifically the "Mighty Morphin" TV series in the long run, or something like that. But if that really is the reason for this decision, it's certainly a mixed message all things considered. Not sure. Oh yeah, also? I loved when the soundtrack would go completely TRON every once in a while. The techno beats really worked for me. :lol Definitely worth seeing though. It's good fun and has a surprising amount of genuine emotion and heart. Quote:

It's pretty weird that I find the third act to be underwhelming. Other than that, the thing that this movie have, is heart. Something movies like BvS, Suicide Squad, Transformers and Ninja Turtles don't.
But man that Tommy Oliver tease is actually pretty awesome. |
I really dug the bit about how everybody hated Kimberly because of what she did with the girl's nude photos.
It sounds like a petty, dumb issue to an adult, but then it reminds you that these are legit teens and to them, that kind of stuff is just tragic. |
While it was really cool seeing Amy Jo and JDF show up right at the end I hope the other 3 original rangers were offered cameos as well and just didn't do it for whatever reason. Always makes me feel a bit weird when only so many members of an ensemble cast get cameos.

Y'know, I'm certain that the second movie would fix a major complaint from detractors, more fight scenes and suit action. After all, Tommy should kick their asses first. I also hope that the other rangers get their weapons tbh

I thought this movie was pretty great when it was being The Breakfast Club-meets-Chronicle, which fortunately was like 75% of the movie. But once it became a full-fledged Power Rangers movie, it was disappointing.
They only used their martial arts fighting skills for like, 30 seconds before jumping in those horribly designed Zords. The never got proper henshin sequences. They totally skipped what could have been and awesome gattai sequence. They never combined weapons to form a mega canon. They never used an awesome finishing attack -- instead opting for a weird body slam move to kill Goldar. None of these things would have been hard to add to the movie. I guess I just felt like it became apparent in the last 20 minutes that the movie was not made by a genuine fan, and it was not made by someone who is good at, or cares about, super hero action. I mean, I'm glad we got Go Go Power Rangers and the Zord rollout homage -- the theater went nuts for that -- but it was one ten second shout out. The whole third act should have been stuffed with moments like those -- instead, we got ten seconds. I now understand why some of the reviews say that the movie is embarrassed to be a Power Rangers movie. Criticisms aside, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the character work and teenage stuff. All that stuff worked so well. As did the movie's humor. If the next movie can build on that stuff, while improving the action a ton and embracing it's PR/Sentai roots, I think we have a winner of a franchise on our hands. Just please, for the love of god, redesign the zords and ranger suits, they're hideous. |

I personally loved the action, but I am certain the second movie would have more fights because it's Green Ranger |
They will probably find Rita on the Moon in the second movie. If they do defeat her for good, I would like to see Rita sealed away and exiled to space by the Rangers which was one of the original ending to MMPR from what I can remember (And the ending the Zyuranger as well).

Just got back from the movie and..... I liked it loved it even. It was everything it needed to be which was a fun power rangers movie. It wasn't LOTR or Star wars but here's thing; it never needed to be it just needed to be a fun moive about 5 teens who become the power rangers. When the classic theme hit oh man the smile on my face. I also liked they didn't kill Rita off as she was one of the big highlights of the film. One Easter egg I think I spotted was Billy's van: was it just me or was it the same color as the Rad Bug?
|
I saw the movie yesterday and it just blew me away. I was really invested with the characters. I did see some of the changes coming and for what they were I enjoyed them. I thought having Zordon and Rita be former rangers makes a lot of sense in this new narrative. It explains why Rita has a power coin and why Zordon is trapped in a wall. I also like the Zeo Crystal playing a huge role in this film.
The Breakfast Club vibe was a nice touch. It really helped ground these characters and made them very likable. Plus Trini and Billy were handled gracefully which I greatly admired. The film did have a hard time trying to find it's footing at times. Sometimes it wanted to be a John Hughes style film, while at times it wanted to be a horror film. Then it went full cheese at the climax which I enjoyed every minute of it. I just wish there would have been more to the climax. I never really cared for the designs but they have grown on me. I still don't care for Goldar but it makes sense in the context of the film. And I think the reason they cut the combining part was to distance itself from Transformers and be its own thing. Which I respect. Overall I had a lot of fun with this movie and I can't wait for the sequels. Hopefully the designs improve and they learn to carry the story with them in suits for longer periods of time. |
Anyone else get teary-eyed when Rita killed Billy?
|
I also noticed that the zords seemed to be possibly sentient. A possible Easter Egg to Zyuranger.
|
Just got back and oh man was I right to be excited. While I did have my doubts there at the end as soon as I saw Zordon crawling through the mud and watching his fellow ranger die I just knew something was coming. The whole breakfast club feel was really enjoyable and I'm glad they did it as it allowed us to actually care about the rangers as people not just remembering what they used to be. Seeing that each of the characters has something they struggle with is great to me as it reminds me of how being a teenager was for me. Jason and his daddy issues was handled well and reminded me a lot of my own story with my dad. Zach had a touching issue with his mom being sick and I enjoyed that he changed from a wild child into someone what recognized that he needed his friends. Trini coming to grips with being a lesbian was handled really well as it wasn't so much that she was only just realizing it as it seemed like she knew and was struggling with how to tell her family. Billy's autism was an amazingly well done thing as to a kid its a throw away line and he just seems like that weird kid in the class but to everyone who knows better its a really great thing to see everyone caring so much about him and helping him when they can. Kimberly had her issue and that was about it. She screwed up royally and is paying the price her issue was learning to realize that she did screw up and she can either let herself live with it or she can move on and learn from it. As for the rest of the film it was awesome. I missed the Mariner Bay and Reefside reference but my friend and I lost our minds hearing that old movie theme over that zord sequence and we both agree that it should have continued longer. The zords and suits have grown on me and I have to say the JDF and Amy Jo cameo made me mark out so hard the family behind me laughed and the dad gave me a high five for not caring about how people saw me. Honestly though the movie was good while it did have its flaws. a lack of action while needed and understandable hurt a bit and Goldar honestly felt forced and was beyond stupid. The car chase at the beginning while good and expository was shot really bad that whole spinning camera thing made me dizzy really quickly. The megazord while I still don't care for its design has started to grow on me a bit. The lack of a true morph was irksome but I was pleased hearing Jason say "It's Morphin Time". Rita, Jason, and Alpha stole the show for me Elizabeth Banks did a phenomenal job and my friend who had avoided all the trailers so as to avoid his pessimistic attitude looked to me and said. "Dude when you said she looked horrific you never said she was going to be so terrifying." Overall I would gladly recommend this to anyone who had seen the show or even to anyone who might have been curious about it it is a really good movie.
|
I hope they say "It's Morphin' Time" more in the sequels. Give us the old morphing sequence!
Plus who would play the Tommy in the movie? And how do you picture its role? |
