Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 9- "Burn Bright, Dragon Master!" Discussion
Xiao Lonpo has unveiled his Draco KyuTama, but even its' added power might not be enough to stop the Jark Matter elite!
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Dragon Ma-star taking care of the cephalopods assasin with ease. And Ryu Voyager looks so majestic.
It looks like this won't be the last time we see Ikagen and Madako though, As Ikagen picked up piece of Madako's tentacle before leaving and Madako has demonstrated her regenarate ability before. Which made me wonder, was that how they survive the suicide blow from Big Bear? Okay lol, just found out something, the 2 recycled Tsuyoindaver Daikans are named Metchatsuyoindaver and Mutchatsuyoindaver |

Off topic, the Ryu Voyager holds the kyutama cockpit like it is a cintamati. For those not familiar, dragons from Asian mythology/lore carry a cintamati with them. And yes, the cintamati is the basis for the dragon balls in Dragon Ball. |
Damn. This is a strong ass debut and Xiao's a LOT more likeable then he ever was, even being a bit of a wisecracker here. I like this

Wow, this was actually pretty amazing. Best episode of the show so far, even. I mean, it has everything! Including but not limited to:
- Backstory! The flashbacks with Captain Dumplings (I think I'm just gonna keep rolling with that name because it amuses me) did a great job building him up, giving a tragic element to him and explaining some of his behavior. - Effects! That prop for Ryu Voyager is nice. Not quite Dairanger levels of rad, but way closer than I'd expect to get nowadays. Which is to say I wouldn't have been surprised if it was just CG. - Yossha Lucky~! He continues to not hog the screentime, and instead keeps doing his thing of talking up the other characters. Though one could argue it's rather lucky he always ends up being right about whatever thing he's running his mouth about this week. - Deus ex machina! Okay, maybe that one's not exactly a good thing, but I'll let it slide. The Kyutamas are magic anyway, so sure, they're also actual Dragonballs. Why not? - Ryu Commander's sweet coat! 'Nuff said! - The joke I was REALLY hoping wouldn't slip by the writers! I loved loved loved seeing the crack about rebranding, with the new logo and everything. What I loved even more was Lucky's line about "being even better than the legend". It reminds me a lot of how Gekiranger warmed me up to the idea of adding a fourth side to its Triangle when they got their purple guy. Taking the obvious idea of treating him as a distinct "extra" member, and then subverting that by having the other guys go "no dude, you're one of us. It's as simple as that". That's awesome and really elevated this episode for me. - Insert songs! There was a line in there I couldn't make out because part of it got covered by ~lasers~, but it went something like "one plus nine may be ten, but *somethingsomething* Kyuranger", so clearly somebody was having a lot of fun writing the lyrics. :lol |

I liked most things I saw, characters included. Also my habit of randomly remembering locations hit me again, the place in the flashback where the bear blew himself up, isn't that also the Train Terminal in Den-O? I think I'm wrong but it reminds me of that. |

I loved this episode, still needing to see it with subs. But am I the only one that got slight Serpentera vibes with the Ryu Voyager? XD

Holy hell, they're really rolling out the Kyurangers, aren't they? Already getting Sky Blue next week.
Anyway, as for this episode. It was pretty good. I'm glad. It had a nice build up, we got some decent backstory on Xiao which details his tragic past, a good explanation for his arbitrary time limit while morphed, and a nice homage to Dairanger. I absolutely loved that shot with the Dragon Voyager. Byoutiful :lol Also, I'm glad the Dragon Voyager got a whole fight to himself without transforming. Good job. Xiao's character does have some depth to it, but it's still not perfect. I feel his quirkiness just doesn't work. While the prime counterargument is that his quirky personality is to mask his emotions, I think that's giving Kyuranger a little too much credit. Still, I really found myself enjoying Xiao here. The reckless soldier that ends up getting his commander killed because he was too overzealous, now thrust into a position of command and watching as his soldiers rush into battle screaming out "LUCKY!!!" against some of the strongest assassins? Very nice. It's basically "What if we took Lucky, but made him a good character?" Speaking of, I still don't like Lucky. Even when he's not a prime focus of the episode, he still managed to sneak in 6 Yosha Luckies. Jesus... Spada also got a little gypped. I really felt he could've had some more development as a follow up to last episode, but oh well. I love the Zyuranger joke. I'm glad they addressed it and just decided to keep the name Kyuranger just because. My key issue with this episode was Xiao's wish. While I doubt he could've wished for Jark Matter to just be destroyed, I think they could've closed a plot hole by wording it so that more than just himself could become a Kyuranger. His wish could've basically opened the floodgates for other Skill/Weapon Kyutama to have the potential to become Transformation Kyutama. |

I'm trying to drown his catchphrase out, but it's shoehorned in so poorly that each utterance is like a punch to the gut :lol
Fair enough, concerning the dragon. Oh yeah, I really like the musket look of his staff in gun mode. |

So if that system the commander created allows for skill Kyutamas to become change Kyutamas then does that mean 88 rangers is a possibility? I loved the part where Shou Ronbou changed the name to Uchu Sentai Jyuranger.
|
While it's a possibility, I don't think it's gonna happen.
It's been X years, and he still hasn't improved the system to work more than a few minutes, and now that his KyuTama is a transformation one, he doesn't really have a personal reason to continue working on it anymore. |

This ep was my favorite one so far so much stuff going on finally have a reason to like this Sentai. Ryu Commander is a cool ranger he had a nice background story and it was build up perfectly with the team overall a really great ep. Next ep the little blue bear becomes a ranger XD. |

Anyone gets the Shenron/Dragonball references. Xiao is constantly breaking the fourth wall again. lol I'm still annoy by the fact Lucky manage convince Xiao instead of vice versa. |
I think you should just look into customizing RyuseiOh/Red Dragon Thunderzord into the Dragon Voyager before anticipating Bandai to release a premium version of it :lol
|
Did I call it regarding the ten Kyurangers and the title change? I think I did!

I think everyone here has already said what I think. Great debut for Ryu Commander, the practical effect for Ryu Voyager looks amazing, and the Juuranger gag is hilarious. Next week we're getting Koguma Skyblue which granted is too quick of a debut but since he's part of RyuTeioh, I don't think they really had the choice of pushing his debut further.

This show is giving me all the Sentai nostalgia feels. :lol |
I see what it really is. But I still get Serpentera as well. (I can't remember it's original Japanese name.)

But the big, overt shout out was the homage to RyuseiOh flying in front of the moon. I squee'ed majorly when I saw that. |
When Ryu Voyager asked for Xiao's wish I was expecting someone to randomly burst in yelling "Women's undies!"

So Xiao gets the ToQ Violet/Cube Whale Wizard cape treatment. And because he's not trying to act like total space case, his back story actually comes off as reasonably good. The cane/rifle is decently adequate, and I applaud his punching of Lucky. Do it more. If I could have one wish for next season, it would be that the mecha is all dragons. ALL. DRAGONS. Spada's entire arc fell flat, which is to be expected when you have so many characters shoehorned in. I look forward to his next moment of cooking clarity sometime around the Christmas special. Part of me wishes he would be the equivalent of Gordon Ramsey, cussing out the Jark Matter while blending his fingers. Equally, Stinger should have been the leader for the entire series. Or Naga. Because Naga steals the show in every scene he's in. He's the Data of this series. Next week, blue bears. And not the Seattle kind. |
Good episode! Even if I felt they showed the Ryuu Commander cape version too soon (hoping it would stretch for a few more episodes) it was good. Much better than what they did with ToQ Violet in the movie.
The Dragon voyager looked awesome. Love the Dairanger homage too. And as said in an earlier post, I liked they didn't put the Dragon in a mecha combination yet. SkyBlue debut is too soon IMO but if they're going to give us more ranger in the future, I won't object even if they will be just one off rangers. 9 episodes in and I am enjoying KyuRanger a lot. I don't mind sacrificing a bit of backstory because it's just so much fun for me watching the colorful cast and the different setup/pose with different sets of rangers every episode. My only complaint is the Yosha Lucky is getting old. ShiShiRed deserved more than one punch in the stomach. |
