Favorite Toku Villains?
So, um...Villains! Villains are cool stuff, aren't they? They can be intimidating, goofy, sympathetic, utterly monstrous, but most certainly, they can be just really fun to watch, maybe even to the point they overshadow the main characters and become your favorite! This is about that type of villain: Who are some Toku villains you personally enjoy and why? They can be from anything, Sentai, Power Rangers, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, etc.
Here's a couple of mine: Cancer (Kamen Rider Fourze) http://i66.tinypic.com/mh9g14.jpg Cancer's screentime may have been short, but he was extremely memorable. This guy was crazy fun whenever he showed up: being a combination of dangerously competent, ridiculously funny (I've got a weakness for puns, I admit it), and surprisingly intelligent and manipulative at times really worked in his favor to me. Ryoma Sengoku (Kamen Rider Gaim) http://i64.tinypic.com/96hzth.jpg In one of Kamen Rider's darkest seasons, Ryoma stood out as being a particularly twisted villain in my eyes; a sociopath who only values his research and himself above everyone and everything else, his constant manipulations and amoral research leads to pretty much everything going into a downhill spiral, but he's very much a love-to-hate villain to me for matching his utter ruthlessness and remorselessness with an odd charisma and just plain fun performance. Basco Ta Jolokia (Gokaiger) http://i67.tinypic.com/30wv7lw.png Basco was by far and away the best villain Gokaiger had for multiple reasons; His selfish, backstabbing, manipulative ways, coupled with his lack of any sort of remorse for any action (even harming innocent kids), his interesting philosophy of having to give something up to gain another thing (even if that something is your best friends), his intense and, IMO, extremely well-done rivalry with Marvelous that culminated in one of the most satisfying fight scenes I've seen in a Toku, and on top of it all, masking his monstrosity behind a veneer of a relaxed, teasing, even affable personality that made him a joy to watch even when he was doing something despicable. |
There's a lot I like from Godzilla to Ultraman and Kamen Rider, but the Dopant named Taboo in Kamen Rider W I especially really liked. I thought the character was interesting and I really liked the costume design and the way the hair was all crazy and had a monster woman inside it, and how the hair covered the eye sections like a mask. The whole design was really cool, and how she flew around and had no legs was pretty weird.

I guess I will have to say Dr. Obler/Gou Omura from Liveman. He is one of the few lieutenant villans who had quite the journey to redemption. I want to say more but just watch the show and you will know what I mean and I hope those who saw Liveman agree with me. The way they developed him despite being a top tier lackey for Bias alongside his other classmates that defected to Volt is still a rarity. We had villains defect in Super Sentai with some being rangers but I think Omura's redemption has weight to it and is one of the reasons Liveman is one of the best 80s Super Sentai shows.

I still have a soft spot for the Sonozakis from W. I loved how they felt like something out of a telenovela yet were fascinating, backstabbing, and ultimately tragic. They were always a thrill to watch.
I also just have to say Kusaka from Faiz for actually getting me to scream at my laptop. Several times. No other villain got quite as much of a rise out of me as him. YOU KNOW WHY. |

Long, from Gekiranger, for basically being my favorite puppet master type character ever.
Like, seriously. While he doesn't have as much invested towards Ken, Ran, and Retsu, his actions are basically the entire series. A bit of an odd one, but the Peacock Undead, from Blade. Being the primary antagonist for the first arc, it was done really well, and he was surprisingly memorable, especially for helping establish Tachibana as a character. Dr. Maki, from OOO, because goddamn. Working all 3 sides right down the middle, without hiding his alliances. His backstory concerning the doll, his sister, and his nihilism is really nice and makes him a super interesting villain. |
Here is another one. I am gonna put spoiler tags just in case.
hint: Timeranger villain Ryuya from Timeranger was the most diabolical I have ever seen. |
Even though I've got ambivalent feelings about Jetman as a whole, the villains of the show were pretty sick, especially Radiguet being an utterly unredeemable dick. Tranza (not Tran) and Grey were also cool.

I know we're still pretty early into Build but Blood Stalk is quickly becoming my favorite villain on that show. I just love how trolly he is!

Shadow Moon will always be my favorite Rider villain. The way they set him up in the show was fantastic, he went from being the brother Kohtaro wanted to save at all cost to the evil he needed to overcome in order to save the world. The conflict that followed was epic.
His design is also a great anti-Rider concept that complements Black at the same time. He may not be the best-written character but Shadow Moon is still my Nr. 1. https://i.imgur.com/kbsxbwI.jpg |
Tough Call!
- Great Leader of Shocker: One of the more significant "First" villains in Toku, he always seemed to survive and be able to reform a group at a moment's notice. He spanned several years of Riders, and even made returns years later! - Queen Hedrian: The first Sentai Crossover Villain, from Denziman-to-Sun Vulcan, she had ample time and effort to flesh-out and evolve her character. - Adjutant Booba: Changeman is an unsung series which was actually enjoyable! This guy isn't necessarily the type you would expect to reform, but his last act adds an unexpected sense of depth. - Empress Hysteria: Say what you will about Ohranger, she becomes another Villain who never seems to get recognition for her final sacrifice. Baranoia never seemed to learn the depth of humanity, but Hysteria finally started to understand at the end, and was willing to die so that her grandson could live! - Gaiark: The initial trinity in Go-Onger carried most of the series, and while Yogostein never seemed to reform in show, Kegalesia and Kitaneidasu stood firm against Yogoshimacritein at the end. Their subsequent "dead" appearances showed that they had given-up as they had what they wanted finally. Given that they started the series events, it's rare for most of the main group to turn good! - Escape: She always referred to Messiah as "Papa" in Go-Busters, and acted more like a dutiful daughter than a sadistic, murder-happy Villain. Granted, she took a lot of pleasure in the suffering she inflicted on others, but it was largely due to her devotion to (and programming by) Messiah. Ultimately, she was betrayed, and she would later lose herself and view others as "Papa", yearning to please that someone. - Glitta: I've heard the love for her before, cause despite her earlier actions, she really just wanted peace between ToQger and the Shadow Line. Calling her a Villain feels like a disservice at times. - Bangray: He makes copies of living or dead characters from someone's memories of said character. 'Nuff said! - Narutaki: This a little more contrived because he isn't a Villain outright, but his disdain for Decade led him to join Super Shocker as Colonel Zol, if only to kill Decade! He seemed to have no love for the various incarnations of Shocker, but he wouldn't hesitate to work alongside their agendas and even influence them to his own ends, regardless of who affected! Again, he worked against Riders and Sentai as Doktor G, only to later allow Gaim aboard the Rainbow Line alongside ToQger. He seems to have softened his opinion of Decade over the years, but almost nine years after the fact, and we still don't fully understand the guy! |

Those are my two favorite Sentai shows because great vilains make everything more interesting. Mitsuzane "Mitsu" from Gaim would have been a heck of a vilain if the little scoundrel has stayed a Heel–Face Revolving Door till the end. |
Mitsuzane Kureshima - I absolutely LOVE this character. He's such a well-written and complex character IMO. When it boils down to it, Mitsuzane is tired of living under everybody's shadow. Throughout the entire course of the show, he's always going along with somebody else's plan, struggling to maintain any sort of autonomy. He becomes Kouta's sidekick, then he goes along with his brother's plan, then he goes along with Sid's, then Ryoma's, then Redyue's, then Ryoma's again. He's constantly being manipulated and/or influenced by the people in his life, but doesn't even realize it because he believes HE'S the master manipulator and it's not until he realizes how royally he screwed up and everything he's lost in his desire for control where he genuinely becomes a better person for it. He's almost written like a tragic Shakespeare character (except for the inevitable tragic ending).
The actor does a fantastic job of portraying all of these different sides of the character as well. Seriously, Mitsuzane has played EVERY single role you can possibly think of throughout the series. From heroic sidekick, to anti-hero, to anti-villain, to flat-out villain, to a full-fledged hero in his own right and it's not easy to pull off all of these different changes within a character convincingly, but damn...he did it. Asakura Takeshi - Well, of course :D He's not the deepest, most complex character in the world, but man is he enjoyable. He came at the perfect time in the story to up the stakes. Before he came along, we were stuck with a bunch of Riders who weren't really fully committed to the whole "Riders kill one another" thing. Scissors was a complete joke, Zolda would rather wait for everyone else to kill each other and Gai saw the whole thing as a game. Then comes Asakura, who straight up doesn't give a fuck. He literally exists within the Rider War just to kill, and that makes him the perfect guy to escalate the conflict. It also helps that Asakura is such a troll, who will laugh in your face as you mourn one of your fallen comrades. He's the perfect contrast for the main Rider as well: a guy who doesn't want to fight vs a guy who seems to exist ONLY to fight. Plus, the Cobra motif is badass. Dan Kuroto/Professor Banno - I put these two in the same category because I like them both for more or less the same reasons. Both are deliciously hammy and over-the-top. Both have kickass Rider suits that are a dark-mirror of the main Rider. Both are hilariously petty. Both have the reputation of being hero-killers. Dan has a bit more character development and depth, but I still love Banno. Dan Masamune - I like Masamune for the opposite reasons for why I like the above two. Outside of his few hammy moments (particularly later on in the series), he's very understated, very cold and very professional. He once again has an awesome design, he really felt like a Final Boss in the context of Ex-Aid because he was so stupidly broken before Hyper Muteki came along. Honestly, there's like 5 other villains I could put on here, but this post would quickly turn into a novel. |

Nice,..good call. |
I’ll go with Gold Drive, he was just an unrepentant psychopath and it was great to see him do basically anything. I absolutely love that it was Gou who ended him. Plus, as a comic fan, I find it really friggin funny that the red guy who was a speedster ended up with a golden copy of himself as the final baddy. Reverse Flash anyone?
I also adored Sagittarius from Fourze, for both the design and because his end fight was the perfect capstone for a show all about friendship and redemption. Oh the Sentai side, it’s the Shadow Line that are my favorite and probably always will be. Those designs were some of the best I’ve seen and I love how political the villains acted. Constantly scheming against each other and barely even tolerating each other. The only one I don’t like is Gothic Lolita Grimace. God she was annoying. :T |

i really like the horrors from garo in that they are just completely evil -some times its nice not to have clear black and white, plus killing host is a mercy as it frees them and stops their pain
