Kamen Rider Build Episode 22- "Victory Of Tears!" Discussion
To settle the war between regions, a duel will be held between Sento & Kazumi. But Sento is still reeling from the side-effects of his new Hazard Trigger, and does not seem to be in peak fighting shape...
SuperHeroTime HAS MOVED TIMESLOTS! You can still view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block now start at 8PM EST on Saturdays! |

So Stalk took over control? Sento still can't control Hazard form and from the looks of it has to rumble with rogue soon enough. Dang Sento has it rough right now.

Wow what a great ep the fight between build and grease was badass from start to finish love it.
Cross Z saving grease and getting the charge suit under his control was a good moment. At the end we see a teased of Kamen Rider Rouge cool looking suit. Also Blood Stalk take over. Damn this show is going in the Gaim direction so many twist and turns. I feel like with Rouge and the two Kaisers they are similar to the energy riders. Looking forward to seeing next week gonna be plot heavy. |
Pls hope Grease joins Team Build!!!!

I wasn't in to the whole bottle gimmicks and think this series will brush off the serious start pretty soon, but I was wrong. This series is one of the best in years at least for older fans. I'm really liking the different twists and stakes this series offer. I would say it beats Gaim in tone because there's no durian to be comedy relief here and we're still in the 2nd quarter of this series. We're going back to the early Heisei route of pain and character development instead of just motw. However, Sentai is still Sentai to give a nice balance and comedy relief after a dark rider episode.
This episode reminds me of the fight between Kabuto and thebee during sunset. All the actors acted well this episode in delivering such emotion. Kind of feel sorry for Grease next week. He sacrifice so much for his comrades, but end up losing all of them at the end. Judging from the toy scans, I guess he'll be done soon unless there's something in the summer movie for him. |
Never, ever trust Stalk.
I realized after that episode, that they even strongly hinted at what he was doing. They mention during the Build/Grease fight that some of the bottles he gave Build were Seito's, which means HE HAD ACCESS TO THOSE! Yeah--big huge hint right there delivered right when we were too busying watching the fight to pay much notice. I love me some good foreshadowing. Banjo actually defeating Hazard Build was great. It's funny that Sento used Hazard in the first place to save Banjo, but instead Banjo has to save him. This rider/secondary rider pair may be my favorite ever. Looking forward to Kamen Rider Rogue next week. |

I like the clawed feet on Rogue.
I don't like how not only haven't we seen any bikes for weeks, but Grease and Rogue doesn't even have bikes, not even just copies of the BuildPhone. Stalk could've passed that data on to Hokuto and Seito since he sent everything else to them. Did Toei just decide to fill the first quarter of episodes with bike action to go "This is the Rider fans wanted" and then forget about it later? |

I'll be frank. This episode was good but compared to the previous episode, it falls short. That is an unfair comparison to make considering that ep21 set the bar quite high, perhaps even too high, but I can't help but make comparisons to it.
There is also the fact that the entire fight was too full of CGI and lacked choreography as the riders were fighting in a limited space. Once again, not something that should irk me but it does. And on the story side of things, Sento forcing the kill button on to Misora was kind of a jerk move. This comes across as even more insensitive considering that Sento of all people should know the toll murder takes on the psyche. Him claiming that Misora shares responsibility in creating Build rings a bit hollow to me since Misora was essentially tricked by Stalk into purifying the Fullbottles. But man oh man, considering the fact that Stalk managed to single-handedly take down an entire country and raise the stakes to heights never seen before, I would say this episode was worth it. Oh, and Kamen Rider Rogue (The Phantom of the West) does look cool, I guess. His overall design is a lot more vicious as compared to NightRogue. And NightRogue looked vicious to begin with. |
I don’t want Grease to go despite no upgrade. He’s got a lot to offer to Team Build.
Imagine Grease and Rogue going Zolda vs Ouja. |

I really liked that fight. I liked that other than the one cool running back-flip that Build did it was basically just a lot of punching in an enclosed area, that made it seem much more brutal and visceral than the usual acrobatic choreography.
Also I must be getting soft in my adult years because seeing Misora with tears in her eyes crying really messes with my emotions. It triggers sympathy in a way I wouldn't have imagined a tv show could do. ..maybe I'm just a softie for a sweet girl in tears. But it's sort of heartbreaking to see her so upset. Putting Sentos life in her hands was kind of a dick move. Should've had that discussion with Banjo imo. That's way too much burden to just dump on Misora. She was breaking just from the thought and stress of it. Sento has good intentions but he's pretty selfish actually. I still think Black Hazard is scary. Especially when it takes over his brain and he just goes into 'Mindless Kill-Mode'. He just becomes an Alpha Predator and that's it,..everything must die. |
I personally think this episode was a great follow-up to the previous one and didn't feel let down at all! So much emotion and awesome political drama. Sento and Ryuuga's dynamic is so good I don't even know what to say. Everyone in this episode had something to contribute and Blood Stalk continues to be an insanely good villain. Perfection.
As for the scene where Sento leaves Misora with the switch to kill him, I see why he chose her. If he had told Ryuuga, Ryuuga probably would have just tried to beat some sense into him (as he actually did in the episode), and Sento probably didn't think he would be strong enough and would end up as yet another casualty. This unfortunately left Misora as the only real option. I mean, I guess he could have asked Sawa, but Sento doesn't know her as well. I dunno, it made sense to me, even if it was a cruel decision. |

The form's name is _______ Hazard, not Black Hazard. So this episode we saw RabbitTank Hazard and HawkGatlung Hazard, and we see SmaphoWolf Hazard in the YouTube special... Also, incidentally, the 'kill device' Sento gave Misora is one half of the FullFull RabbitTank Bottle; so they're already foreshadowing that. |
I'm still in disbelief a Kamen Rider series can be this good this consistently.
The way they interspersed those flashbacks during the fight was a pretty inspired move, and it goes without saying how amazing all the characters are at this point (Misora being the standout here). The worst thing I have to say is that it got a little awkward when everything turned into a video game for a couple seconds. https://i.imgur.com/iaBmkPs.jpg But I mean, what do you expect from CG in a Toei show? It's a nitpick at worst. |

Did anyone else notice that the self-destruct bottle was the top of the FullFull Bottle or was it just me? |

So based off that last moment in the Grease fight, it appears that the Hazard forms can use the weapons and abilities of the Best Match it uses.
It's a good thing he didn't use any of his crazier Best Matches then, NinninComic's duplication ability, or GorillaMond's ability to encase stuff in diamond and then smash them to pieces, are the last powers I want Build to have access to while going on a mindless killing spree. Also, Sento once again appears to lose all memory of what happens after he goes in a murderous rampage, so him waking up from after the battle must've been quite a shock. Imagine how scary it would be going into a extremely high stakes fight only to lose consciousness 2/3rds of the way through with your last thoughts being that either you or your opponent could be dead by the end of the fight. Speaking of which, while I do find Sento's decision to give Misora the kill-switch very insensitive to her feelings on the matter. I'd also like to take a moment to say: Good lord Sento, you actually made a kill-switch for this?! Seriously, after all that training he had in the YouTube Special to increase his Hazard Level and to control himself longer, he still decides to build a device that kills him in case of emergency. That is on par with Emu telling Poppy to shoot him with the Buggle Driver Zwei to prove she's a truly evil, and then holding the its barrel up to his chest when she refuses. |

I love these weekly threads because ya'll will point out something I missed or present a scene from another point of view.
Always a good read. |
Finally had time to watch the subs. While not quite as good as last episode, that was quite a high standard to meet. Even compared to 21 though, this was fantastic. Amazing and brutal fight, Grease and Build letting loose with everything they had. Definitely a bit worried about Sawatari's chances of survival after this point though. Would not put it past this show to kill a major character like that
|
Yes, last week was a very high bar to meet, but that entire conversation with Misora and Sento was just a very well done continuation of this. This series is crushing it every week. The last Rider series I felt was this deep was Faiz.
Which really brings a question to light. These are characters that are branded as heroes, but in some form are really anti-heroes because their powers are derived from some form of what they're fighting. Does that make them tools/victims of circumstance, or are they really heroes? The separate states in Build chose to use these Riders as their weapons. Gaim was very much the same. Are they allowed dignity even if they're no longer human? That's where I feel they're going with this series. To show that war isn't just about people being tools. |
This episode is just as good as last episode IMO. Misora was a particular standout. Her actress is fantastic (as is pretty much everyone else in the cast) and even though I saw it coming, Banjo coming in to stop Sento from killing Kazumi had me damn near jumping for joy because of how well everything was executed.
I've also gotta say that the idea of entire wars being settled via two Kamen Riders beating the shit out of each other is such an awesome idea that I want to see it in future series. Also....I'll never get tired of BloodStalk being a manipulative asshole. He's playing literally the entire cast of the show and it is beyond entertaining. And of course, we gotta talk about Kamen Rider Rogue, who's first appearance is so badass. It's actually interesting because while we know his Rider name from scans, they didn't actually mention it and I don't know if they'll mention it next episode either. So I can totally buy how people who haven't spoiled themselves wouldn't be able to easily figure out that it's Gentoku, especially given the entire change in motif. Overall, Build continues to be, well, Build and that is nothing but a good thing. |
next episode, another of the Hokuto Crows will die. Grease getting owned before Build and Cross-Z too.
We will probably see RabbitRabbit and TankTank debuting in ep 24 or 25. lots of new forms and power-ups to see in the second half of the series...which include all the riders, except Grease. |
The punch-out between Banjo and Sento is my favourite fight in the whole show so far. Funny, considering it was so much shorter than Grease vs Build. Cross-Z's recurring theme music is just so great.

Grease will need Build and Cross-Z’s help! |
i have a feeling the remaining 2 crows will die and be the curb stomp battle to know things are serious. Overall good i like that he planned a kill switch for himself to prevent him from going out of control and i also like how ryuga got over his problems as well. stalk was as predicted he is the chess master planning for and controlling everything. Plus its fairly obvious now that all 3 sides are only pawns to get what he want and that is not just the full bottles, since they where about to lose it all he could have gotten easily all 30 sets but instead he is growing build. I have a feeling he has an even more dangerous plan for the next war.
he already has shown rouge so its a lot like when grease showed up so he has more up his sleeves i suspect he has more hazard smash already prepped |
I was deeply impressed by this episode, probably the best of the series so far. Kamen Rider doesn't always get performances this good out of its actors. The actors playing Misora and Sento just nailed it. (And yes, what Sento asked of her was unfair; I appreciate that he has flaws.) I loved this episode's use of time and flashbacks.
I loved Gaim - it was an excellent show; my favorite Rider series - but even it wasn't this consistently engaging from its first episode onward. Furthermore, I'm still gobsmacked that the show has managed this work for me despite my increasing frustration that Build has an oppressive, annoying number of forms. If the show can keep this up - and there's no reason so far to think it won't - it'll probably unseat Gaim as my favorite Rider show. |
