Is an adaptation of Kamen Rider Build possible?
Would any of you like to see something like Build? A way to make it better than Dragon Knight and Masked Rider?
|
As an American adaption? Yeah if we had to adapt one build would probably be the best as it would convey the thenes and ideas of kamen rider well, if we straight adapted it or it could get more interesting with a more clever adaption.

I hope it doesn't get adapted.
America dumbs down and 'kiddiefies' what it adapts. Even looking at Sentai compared to Power Rangers. Sentai seems aimed more at teens-young adults while the Power Rangers episodes I've seen, (i've been watching Ninja Steel on Netflix when I'm bored and want something to watch on my phone),..seems like they're aimed at very young kids. It's goofy and silly and cringey at times. They already tried twice with Kamen Rider and couldn't pull it off. Honestly the best thing (in my bloviated opinion), would be to make a feature length movie sort of like the Marvel movies. Make it "badass and edgy" (I know I know,..stupid industry buzz-words),...and something that would make people want to watch more. If they started with a really good movie, they could spin it off into a tv show. imo that's the only way it would work and get decent ratings. ..or make a Netflix show, ..after the movie. Honestly I'd rather they don't even try to Americanize it. I'm very happy with it right where it is, showcasing the original culture it's based on. |

I thought Dragon Knight didn't succeed because the toys kinda suck so it didn't sell well. The same fate as the Thundercats reboot faced. As for one to adapt I rather it not be Build or at least not yet. Rather another is adapted and work it's way to Build. Would be down for a Wizard adaption.

Kamen Rider and Sentai are for kids, but America's standers are different than Japan. In Japan, it seems like they make shows for kids that a general audience can enjoy while in America, most kids shows are normally made only for kids.
Not to mention Sentai and Kamen Rider get away more stuff than what is okay for kids in America (We don't have as many darker kids stuff in the US like we used too). |
If only there was a way to make a dark series like KR somehow. Either in America or Canada.
I feel Canada is better and that America should stay away from it. But as for KR Build adaptation. I'd imagine Nancy from Momoland playing the role of the heroine based on Misora/Miitan. |

There's been a bunch of times watching Kamen Rider or Sentai where I thought, "this wouldn't be shown to young kids in America." Heck just last night watching Dairangers the Gorma woman was hurt in the fight and had blood coming out of both eyes while she yelled that she was blind and couldn't see. https://i.imgur.com/FpCXRVq.jpg or Kou watching his Mom get smashed by falling rocks? That wouldn't work here, they'd never show something like that to little kids. So when I said earlier that it seems aimed more towards teens and young adults,..that may not be the case in Japan, but in the States scenes like that are very much like....idk...Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Something aimed towards teens and young adults. Shows that make sexual innuendo jokes and have things like blood and violence. I wasn't trying to talk trash about Power Rangers earlier, btw. It just seems extremely "kiddie" in comparison. I know at the end of the day all of these Toku shows are supposed to be for kids, but I guess I see different levels of maturity and 'kiddiness' in them. Like Ultraman seems more kid-friendly to me than Kamen Rider, and I really like Ultraman. I guess I'd consider Kamen Rider to be the most grown up out of all of them. It can get surprisingly dark. Not even counting stuff like Amazons. |
If Build were to get adapted, Im guesing that instead of mutated humans, Smash would be turned into aliens from mars.
|
If Build got adapted in the US, I would rather have it be by someone else other than Saban. Saban already adapted Black RX and no one really liked it.
|
The people who made Dragon Knight were on the right track they just need to stay away from aliens. And kid shows can get dark but it's usually harder to get away with it so it's usually series finales or shows not just aimed for kids. Though Netflix does help.

Will they be given a second chance? Netflix? Canada should give a shot at the Toku industry! |
As long as Figma gets the license to any future Rider adaptation’s Japanese dub like with what happened to Dragon Knight, I don’t care what happens.
Just make sure it’s good, does well enough to ensure sequels, and eventually able to have the cast of Cardcaptor Sakura as Riders through Figma. |
Neither. Australia would be better for Build. Island setup and better topic coverage as their kids shows already have a more diverse material and heaviness to them. The Jonathan M. Schiff shows are proof of that which often go to Nick or Teen Nick anyway. And there have been other original Nick shows that have been more topic diverse too. Not the Schneider ones that have been poop. I mean the good ones like that trio alien hunters one and similar.
Plus with Australia, it can come stateside through Teen Nick. America/Canada seems to do better with original material. The kids drama scifi genre is profitable, and they do have wider topics they can cover. It's more deterred by the conservative mom brigades that complain. Disney and Nickelodeon have been doing really well in wider genres with original material. (Mech X4, Lab Rats, Mighty Med, the other fantasy shows on Nick, etc. And some have done a few rather dark story lines intermixed in.) The conservative mom brigade is what tried to call "Jessie" racist for having a diverse multi-cultural family that celebrated and learned about their differences to co-exist as a family. And it's also the conservative mom brigade that threw fits about the wider parent diversity shown in Loud House. So thankfully Disney and Nick ignored those complaints. But that's also why Korra's finale was relegated to internet release instead of on tv, because of how it ended with Korra's openly being bi at the end. So that's one of the biggest hurdles in why children's TV is so hindered these days. There's also a whole issue about wider merchandising too. So finding the right outlet that can get to shelves and sell is a big question. Merchandising makes or breaks shows more than ratings do. A big figure like they did for Power rangers and other superheroes would be awesome for Ultraman or really even Ben 10's way big. I do expect a resurgence of toku-like dramas though for kids. And there is a wide array of shows that can do it and new fresh talents that want to do their own versions. So I expect things like Ultraman and Beetleborgs could make a comeback in a new way. Same to VR Troopers, and Gridman. Another issue is how the shows are filmed. Sentais are filmed in a way for globalizing with scene splicing. Rider series aren't. More would have to be re-filmed. And in other cases, matching film grade would be nice too. So like ultraman, we're more likely to get dubs than re-makes on rider series. They need more work than Sentai remakes do. The other issue is translations though. Subs have been rather relaxed in accuracy. Using curse words that really aren't part of the translation due to lack of finding an age appropriate word that does fit, and also line emphasis because of word order that's destroying line delivery and dramatic emphasis from word order. So many of those issues would have to be fixed too in translations and dubs as well as fixing that in any series remake. Though I kind of do want to see Syfy take on Faiz like they did Being Human. KS7 would be a good one too. Same to Shibuya 15, or Mirrorman Reflex. Or Ultraman Nexus. IFC would be a good place too for an international kids block. But for merchandising purposes, it does need to be one of the more dominant stations. Netflix or one of the normal cable package outlets. For rider series though, I do think we may see something interesting in a couple years that's jam-packed enough with awesome that Toei easily finds someone that'll help them make it world wide with cameos and all. That'd rock. And with global hero stuff becoming more dominant and wider lore reaches being made, I wouldn't be surprised if we get an "American Rider" type series at some point on a main network channel like NBC. Especially with how well shows like Flash and Legends are doing. Especially as Toei is looking into new bigger ways to celebrate anniversaries. |
you make a lot of good points.
Ironically that same overprotective "Mom Brigade" are the same people that will buy a phone or tablet for their kid and allow them to access the internet and every bizarre perversion the kid can possibly stumble across. |

The violence in Dairanger could work for kids in the US, but sadly people still think that your kid will become the next Jeffrey Dahmer if your kid sees blood on TV or in a video game. |
Eh, part of what makes Build's writing what it is is the social commentary, Japan's getting their first major milotary shift since WWII iirc, which would fly over the heads of American audiences. Though theoretically I think the show would do fine if all that got censored was the on screen deaths and Utsumi getting shot early on in the show. They still haven't gotten back to that now that I think about it...
|
You could have the adaption be written around the social commentary going on in the US. The Sky Wall in the show could be easily be used as a social satire on Trump's wall. American Toku adaption shows don't always follow the story and themes 100% from their Japanese counterpart.

Also why is it doomed to fail? It's like Daredevil or Arrow or the Flash of Jessica Jones but explicitly for kiddos. |

...I just know one of these days I'll have to buck up and watch Dragon Knight.
I did find a copy of it and save it, but I can't even say I put it on the Back Burner as much as I shoved it behind the Stove. hahahaha |

What do you think of Misora & Sawa?
To make counterpart of Misora/Miitan, how about a K-Pop idol? AEGYO! |

Dragon Knight's pretty good. |
I try to watch Dragon Knight and I had a hard time sitting through it. The acting in it was so awful. I know it's a kids show, but I wish it could have been better. If it was not for the god awful acting, it would be more watchable to sit through in my opinion.

But if only Build was different. How do you picture Build's counterparts? |

William O'Leary is having the time of his life as Xaviax though and I love it. |

What does everyone think of this cast?
