Hasbro to develop "follow-up" to 2017 Power Rangers Movie
 

Hasbro's latest investor's report has just been released and in small section of they report they specifically confirm:

please no more helmets that show the human faces inside them.

that just looks awful. I hated that in the movie.

I want the cast and the lore to stay the same, but I would be extremely happy to see the suit, robot, and monster aesthetic get.... I dunno, better than the last one.

Suit designs are mostly staying. Though green will likely get some tweaks to not be the same as Rita's version and to better implement the chestguard.

Monster designs will get tweaked because it's all new monsters anyway.
And robot aesthetics will likely get some mild tweaks. Especially after the events of the first movie, where combining is now more integrated into them instead of being a last ditch hail Mary.

Which in turn hopefully means a really badass Dragonzord.

Lore is definitely staying, but will likely get expanded upon.

The cast should be staying too, they wanted to do a sequel. And they'll likely expand the cast some too for new characters.

Follow up means sequel. They'd say "all-new movie universe for power rangers!" if it was a full reboot.
"Follow up" is said to suggest they want to carry the hype and praise of the previous. To set expectations of the material they expect to keep in what they are telling investors. If they wanted to start over, they'd start the hype on that by saying "all-new" or "start from scratch" etc.

The general aesthetic of the suits and zords were likely the worst aspect of the last movie. They didn't gel well with the characters, they were a result of current overly-realistic overdesigned models ala Bayformers, and they just looked plain bad. Good thing they only appeared for like 10 minutes and were overshadowed by the excellent chemistry and character building.

If they do indeed continue on from the last movie I hope they upgrade the designs and just say time has passed and they are more in control or whatever which is why they look different, etc.

The Cloverfield movies all have a continuity. None of them are a reboot. So, in essence, they are sequels and prequels all at once. Also, Cloverfield is a tricky movie to pick to reference.

I really, sincerely hope the sequel actually happens. I really dug the movie and it's a shame it underperformed. It deserves a continuation.

I really hope it's a sequel to the 2017 movie and by using the words "Follow Up" it sounds like it could be!

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the movie considering how precious the original MMPR are to me but it was really well done. Yes the outfits and zords looked a bit...'alternative' but I grew to like them and with such a great character development established in the first movie then the sequel can really just let us enjoy them being Power Rangers.

I really hope to see Power Rangers: Green With Evil become the official sequel to the 2017 movie with an all returning cast and story.

A G.i. Joe 3 has been in the works for years & yet we still have yet to get a g.i. joe 3. If they can't get the 3rd g,i, joe going or even a new g.i. joe cartoon then i do see a power rangers 2 coming.

Power Rangers is a much bigger property than GI Joe.

Yet the suits performed really well in merchandise sales. So that's likely staying. The aesthetic fits to the concept of the lore itself. These are the ranger suits of Eltar. Not earth ones. So for the lore, they need to look moderately alien. Though they may get some minor tweaks as the coins and Zords also respond to the subconscious of the Rangers themselves(but in the minds of the characters, these are what the ranger suits are supposed to be). But likely won't change much as the arsenal is still relatively alien in origin and things like Jason's power sword are still of Eltar type design, so the suit would have to match. So mostly we'll see some changes in the Zord design as it'll have the new combination elements integrated better. With likely some mild changes there in outward form of the zords, but keeping relatively the main animal designs as used for now, with character centered changes to the outward appearance of the zords based on how the coins feed the zords from the Ranger subconscious and will. (As suggested in the lore.)

Earth influenced suits would have to be a later thing. Like how the original series changed suits every so often for upgrades. So in comparison, we likely won't see full new suit design until a Ninjor cameo for that upgrade, or a Zeo movie.

Plus it gives Hasbro a chance to do first movie suit design with all-new figures.

Likely still will, but more footage of them closed this time. With open face relegated to only in Zord or in downtime/at HQ. But even then, likely they'd unmorph, and if they are leaving for battle the helmets would be closed. They also might work in a secondary element of a full helmet collapse though. So it goes from open faced, to Starlord like full collapse to the back of the neck. Depending on what the scenes call for where and the surrounding factors. Like in zord, open face at most because the helmet acts as a racing helmet for protection. But in HQ, full helmet collapse would make sense if there's no reason to need it on. But again, that kind of transition would depend on the scenes itself, and whether or not they'd simply unmorph for more comfort, unless various controls on Zordon's ship only responds to Eltar tech that the Ranger suits are.

You're SOL entirely then. Odds are it will be. The cast wouldn't have been mentioning that if it wasn't part of the marketing and what's likely planned. So it was a way to prep audiences to be more accepting of that. That and evil male rangers is really overplayed at this point and repetitive. So for stronger hype marketing, they'll likely go for something fresh and new and more modern in approach. With some very big oomph. With likely some other plans in the works to work with the movie universe in a new way to do new all-different versions of stories, while keeping Shattered Grid in the TV universe some how. So we're likely to see two full multiverses that don't interact come out of this long term. Which means the cinematic one would need some wild diverging from the original. Like it's already been doing with the changes to Zack, Trini, and Billy.

You sound like one of those people that complains about diversity in Star Trek, or politics in Star Wars when both franchises are literally founded on those concepts from the very beginning.

Same. That's going to rock. I really hope they find a good mix of modern Godzilla and Classic Dragonzord. The Gouryujin form definitely needs that Dragon coin chest too.

The GI Joe movies outperformed the Ranger movie. The toylines are about equal on performance doing better based on trends of the time they were released in. GI Joe's dip has to do with other trend factors of the market, which is why Power Rangers is on a potential upswing coming up.

This does mean that power rangers has the potential to outperform GI Joe 1 and 2 though. GI Joe 3 is a wild card though. But I'd consider them on par to each other if they are marketed right and hit the right chords in their respective material. Both deal with different trend factors they have to balance and work through. So comparing them because of the different genre appeals isn't really all that fair to begin with. GI Joe is military, and military films have different trend issues to deal with because of various issues of the time. You can see how the various factors play to the mentalities of the time in when they gained footing and dominated the market, to when they started their downswings, and that's essentially how market trends work to cater to the zeitgeist subconscious for the market. This is why power rangers is on a potential upswing in the market because of the current trends of right now and the reality escapism kids are looking for that anyone can be under the mask or redeemed/chosen to be a hero. Which is more reason why Green needs to be an all new concept, and something else needs to be introduced alongside it to balance that.

If handled right, this Power Rangers sequel could reach some pretty decent return levels. The hype is stronger for seeing a green ranger and dragonzord, and there were large chunks of the audience wanting to see a "green with evil" movie instead of an origin one. So there'll likely be an increase there too because of that.

With some minor tweaks to the main mecha designs, which would make sense anyway as the story progressed, this could go even farther. Suit designs likely won't alter much though. These are the Ranger suits of Eltar, not earth made ones. Earth new designs would have to come later because of the way the lore is built. So we likely won't see that until they get to a Zeo movie if it makes it that far.

It's in development. With likely PR2 getting released before it.

Oh yeah, I absolutely understand what they were going for - and if they done well in toy sales, welp, that's the end of that lol - but I think there's a lot more interesting ways to do an 'alien' aesthetic especially when this one is rather overdone in modern cinema. And, like I said, I really do think they are overdesigned to the point of being an eyesore. And that's not even mentioning Trini and Kimberly's outfits having the really dumb boobsocks and awkward heels.

Certainly understand why they're like that, just wish that they took it in a very different direction. Again though, the strength of the previous movie was in the character building; so that's where most of my focus will be and what's most important. I think it says a lot when something as minor as the suits and zords are the worst problem lol

The thing that people don't mention much about Power Rangers is that it's really just good writing all around. Great character building, world developing stuff.

It's not perfect, but it spends a lot of time letting the audience get to know the cast before jumping into the action.

I do hope that the sequel has more fighting. They already established who each of the rangers are so I wish they do not retread those waters.

The general rule of thumb for Superhero movies is that the sequel is always better than the original because they don't have to deal with the origin story.

Now that we've got that out of the way then hopefully they can make a good second film.
