Which great Sentai season with weak villain?
Just says this sentai season is almost perfect but their villains suck!
Think like Guardians of The Galaxy, a great movie but the villain suck! Is there's one sentai season where villains are weakest characters? |
Zyuohger comes to mind immediately. AMAZING show all around and while it's kinda the point that Genis doesn't do much, his backstory and motivations could have at the very least been explored more instead of literally the final fucking episode

Genis was just another generic villain who want to destroy the world. Why do every Sentai villain's motivation always deal with either taking over the world or destroy the world? That doesn't make them compelling villain. |

Genis and Don Dogranio are essentially the exact same character -- bored and aloof until the last 2-3 episodes, where they're suddenly revealed to be insanely powerful and are motivated to join the battle for no real reason other than, "well, I guess this show is about to end..." It's kind of hard to identify "great" seasons with bad villains because the villains are so essential to my enjoyment of a Sentai series. I'm tempted to add Gokaiger to this list, but at least there we had Basco, Insarn, and Barizorg to make things somewhat interesting... |

but the main reason i like him is because of his thematic connection to the show, he's basically an antithesis to the theme of connecting that the show has. he's thousands of different being connected together, but hates it. he has multiple connections to his minions, naria most notably, and he actively cuts them all off for his own personal gain he's not a perfect villain, all the issues people have with him are definitely legitimate, but i still liked him a lot. i liked dogranio, too, but he's definitely worse |
I generally liked the villains in Zyuohger because it felt believable that they'd follow a formula of sending out monsters one after the other and then making them big -- it's just a game, after all; they're not out to conquer the world.
Meanwhile, Kubald (Quvar? Whichever translation you like) has one of the coolest designs I've seen for a Sentai villain and had me prettttty interested. I wish he got a redemption because he of all Sentai villains deserved it. |
My first thought was Zyuohger, but that had Bungray, as well as Kuvald, so it's not all bad. Which means it goes to Ninninger. I know people like Kyuemon - I wasn't so big a fan, so it has no good villains for me. Lackluster villains have been a thing in Sentai for a while, though, so I hope Ryusoul pulls us out of that.

Gokaiger. People love it to death and it brought it new fans before USA butcher it. Honestly, only kyoryuger come close in popularity.

So far, Gokaiger has been the weakest for me. I get that the whole point of Warz Gil is that the head of the empire is a spoiled, ineffectual brat, but the other generals couldn't quite make up for him. Barizorg should've been a much bigger deal than he actually turned out to be. It took me a while to realize that having a strong central narrative would've missed the point of Gokaiger. Amazing that there's a Figuarts Warz Gil, of all the possible Gokaiger villains... The reverse, I guess, would be the otherwise-disappointing season with fantastic villains: ToQger. I could never get into the theme or the heroes - the show's twist came a little too late to register - but the Shadow Line were just terrific: cool designs, their utter disdain for one another, Zed's seeming capriciousness masking a very specific obsession, Gritta's love for "Schwartz-sama." (Also, she totally should've ended up being an extra Senshi. We could'a used an indigo hero.) |
