Star Trek: Lower Decks
Half-hour Animated Series 10-Episode First Season CBS All-Access Debut: August 6th. |
10 half hour episodes? Thats remarkably short for an animated show, isn't it?
|
Currently watching Discovery Series 2 on DVD. In 3 time they will be working Star Trek TOS The Cage into it at #08 If Memory Serves.
Also pre ordered Star Trek Picard on DVD so I'm curious to see how it is. I saw most Star Trek episodes except Years 3 and 4 of Enterprise. Don't have CBS All Access but I own the DVDs for Discovery. |

Been a little curious as to how any of the TNG material regarding Bajoran history can be remotely reconciled with what is learned in DS9.
The first time we learn of the Bajoran people is in "Ensign Ro", which is named for Ro Laren, a disgraced Bajoran officer. Discrepancies with DS9 are somewhat numerous: - Laren wears her Bajoran earring adornment on the wrong ear. This is a relatively minor issue, all things considering. - The Bajoran people are constantly referred to as both "Bajora" and "Bajoran". The "Bajora" term would not be preserved for DS9. - The Bajoran people are described as wanderers after "the Cardassians annexed their homeworld". DS9 would very much show and explain that Bajorans remained on Bajor after the Cardassians arrived. - No reference is made to the "Celestial Temple" or the "Prophets". This is also a minor issue, but a noteworthy one given how often Bajoran culture incorporates the Prophets into almost every aspect of their lives. The absence of reference to the "Celestial Temple" is understandable given the fact that, chronologically, the wormhole had yet to be verified. - Laren and the Bajorans have nose ridges in TNG and DS9. TNG gives additional ridges above the nose and over the eyes. This isn't a major issue given how extraterrestrial makeup is handled with the franchise. - In "The Next Phase", Laren mentions "borhyas" (or "brohyas") instead of the "pagh" which would be used frequently to describe a Bajoran soul or spirit in DS9. - Also in "The Next Phase", Worf states that the Bajoran Death Chant is two hours long, and it's clear that Laren has no great desire to even acknowledge or listen to it. Another cultural detail which would be quietly forgotten or ignored in DS9, though extensive funerals weren't always shown either. Laren's last appearance (from an episode standpoint) was in "Preemptive Strike", a Maquis episode. Future references to Laren occur in novels and/or comics (which are probably non-canon unless otherwise stated or retconned). |
I know a bunch of stuff with Ensign Ro was semi-explained by the novels suggesting that, a lot like Earth (or any reasonably sized planet tbf), Bajor doesn't have a homogenous belief system. Similar to the divisions between Christianity, there were a variety of similar but distinct belief systems. The only thing I remember this explicitly covering is the earring, but it can do a bunch of those.
As for the other stuff? The Bajorans stuff wasn't set in stone, and later writers redid it for what worked better for the plot. It's just how things go expanding from one semi-major character in a few episodes to diving into their culture for a syndicated seven series show. It happens. |

I have some more personal ideas on the remaining discrepancies (naming, physical, and historical) to try and explain the less-than-cohesive continuity. Another thing entirely is if she survived the conflict between the Maquis and the Cardassians. DS9's "Blaze of Glory" was a virtual bookend to most Maquis plotlines (save for a few extras in Voyager), but Ro wasn't referenced. I believe one of the people she met in "Preemptive Strike" was in DS9 as part of the plan to steal the Defiant and it's implied that all involved in that plan were arrested and charged afterwards. |
A YT video which defines Picard, Sisko, and Janeway based on the ethical doctrine they follow.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oWOMe168BAY It also defines the three in Freudian terms based on the Id, Ego, and Super-Ego, but more as a frame of reference. |

Louise Fletcher, better known as Kai Winn of DS9, has passed away at 88.

On Wednesday I finish Picard II.
The time jump in Picard II looked solid. Like Star Trek VIII First Contact , Picard goes back to 2024 LA to fix the Federation's future. I'm ready for the final 10 episodes. As for Discovery V there are 10 episodes. It was solid how they ended Series IV. Saw this on DVD. |
Bad news -
You can't stream any Star Trek movie on Paramount+. AMC used to have Beyond. This is stupid considering that you can watch all the TV shows on that feed. What's up with them dropping the movies? |
Probably a rights issue with exactly who has the distribution contact with Paramount for the movies.
|
Thanks. They moved to HBO Max but that could change to
not being on any stream feed so I shipped the 12 movies I didn't have on DVD. Group pick up for the first 10 movies. Singles with the Kelvin movies. I just got the 10 movie Stardate Collection. One of Brent Spiner's finest performances other than as Data from TNG. This never gets old. :lolol |
After discussing Enterprise with a friend, I finally learned a very wild detail: How Hoshi Sato might have died!
The Enterprise two-parter, "In a Mirror, Darkly", focused not only on the Mirror Universe counterparts of the Enterprise characters, but also provided a "canonical" explanation of what happened to the USS Defiant from the TOS episode "The Tholian Web". When examining Federation records via the Defiant's computers, Mirror Archer and Mirror Hoshi examine the official accounts of their Prime Universe counterparts. Mirror Archer even finds how Prime Universe/Timeline Hoshi died, but Mirror Hoshi doesn't want to hear it. While part of the biographies on the monitor can be read via freeze-frame, not all of the material that was written for the two-parter was incorporated into those biographies. According to my friend's look-up (which I swear was a Wikipedia page), the unseen and unspoken part of Prime Hoshi's bio is that she would eventually marry and live to be 117 before being executed by Governor Kodos during the famine on Tarsus IV! No surprise that this refers to the TOS episode "Conscience of the King", which focuses on identifying whether a theatre actor is in fact Kodos and that Kirk is one of the few left who could identify and implicate him. In essence, Hoshi was alive when Kirk was young. That said, it's up for debate as to whether this unused portion of Prime Hoshi's bio is considered canonical or not. |

Star Trek - Strange New Worlds
OK we have 2 things that need to happen with this 1 - They need to build twards Jim taking command of the Enterprise after Series IV 2 - End it with Captain Pike after Series IV and spin off Kirk in a new series. I do like the fact that Nyota Uhura has been way more involved story wise and not just somebody who was just there as in the Original Series. Uhura should be getting one more promotion to Lt. as well soon. We now also need to pick up McCoy and Checkov at some point soon. Saw Series II on DVD BTW. |

There was also Lee Kelso and of course Piper would have to join the Enterprise I'm thinking soon. Piper was the CMO before McCoy.
Regardless of the current Captain Kirk it would be interesting to see a new take on TOS just to see what they could do with it. Strange New Worlds continued after Discovery Series II for their 1st year. I'd love to see them lead into TOS. |
