Marvel/DC, Amalgam, & More: Comics Crossover Thread
3 Attachment(s)
We have individual threads for Marvel and DC, but I didn't see something like this.
There are instances of people discussing the possibility of another joint publication crossover work. Some really don't see a point in doing something like that, but it also has relatively receptive supporters. https://comicbook.com/comics/news/ma...cott-snyder/#2 If something does happen in the near future, it might be good to reflect on the previous instances something similar occurred. Should Marvel and DC do a crossover or not? Were the previous crossovers good or bad? All Marvel/DC crossovers are on the table, including the Amalgam Comics line! And why limit ourselves to just these two publishers? Did Marvel do a crossover with another character or team with another publisher that you liked or disliked? Did DC? Share here. P.S.: Included photos of the single issues I have obtained up to this point for reference. |
Neat idea for a thread! I've been selling comics (or working at stores) long enough to remember when the Marvel Vs DC and Amalgam stuff hit. (For the record: Uh-MAL-Gum, not AMUL-Gam. 80% of the people who came looking for these books got the name wrong.) They're pretty fun!
That said, I'm not sure we'll ever see more of them. Marvel and DC are now arms of massive corporations, and those corporations have no interest in doing anything to support others. Like, they can't even agree to keep collections of that material in print, let alone coordinate to make more. It would sell insanely well (the JLA vs Avengers comics came out before there were even Avengers movies or Justice League movies!), but the financial gain from a hit comic book is, like, an accounting error to these corporations. They don't care. Unless the gain is in the billions, it's not going to get approved. But at least we've got the older comics kicking around! I'm a big fan of Spider-Boy Team-Up, from the second wave of Amalgam books. It's a mash-up of the 2099 comics from Marvel and the Legion from DC, with some killer art by Jose Ladronn. |
I'm hoping Geoff Johns do that Secret Crisis that was name dropped in Doomsday Clock.
Honestly I think DC is open for crossovers, it's Marvel that's tricky due to being owned by Disney. I mean Power Rangers had a crossover with Justice League! Which I really hope one day they'll make an animated movie of it. |

It's mostly about public perception, and who has the most to gain. Disney probably doesn't feel like a DC crossover would do much for their brand, what with them being the more dominant company when it comes to superheroes. |
The only crossover comics I currently own are:
And I highly enjoyed every one of them! I think the only real "complaint" I can give is that I wish Robotech/Voltron were like, one issue longer, since there's a few plot details they just kinda drop that I wish were expanded on a little more. But yeah, so far I'm ridin' good on crossovers! That said, are there any Spider-Man crossovers you guys would recommend? Surprisingly I've read all of none of them despite Spidey being my favorite superhero. Been looking into reading the Superman crossover at the very least, if only for historic value. |
There's one combo that I'm sad and surprised that never got used. Green Lantern/Daredevil. I think it's name would have been Green Devil.

Not a Marvel/DC crossover, but still worth noting about in terms of crossovers: Spawn and Batman.

I'm surprise a Power Rangers and Voltron comic didn't happen yet.

Until then, we'll have to accept what is. I also have another crossover which is mildly applicable: Robotech and Voltron! |

I thought Toei also owns the rights to the GoLion/Voltron IP as well? Oddly enough, Power Rangers follow a similar format that both Voltron and Robotech did when it came to adapting shows in America. It would be cool if PR crossovers with one of those franchises.

Man, i knew about amalgam but thought it was only for hybrid heroes created from both brands, didn't know they also did crossovers. Were the crossovers frequent and released in sizeable amounts? Or were they infrequent and hard to find?

Transformers/MLP brought a huge smile to my face, and the ending leaving wiggle room for a sequel makes me excited.
While I doubt we'll get that sequel, the possibility for it give me hope. |

Amalgam is, in and of itself, the "crossover" using hybrid heroes from Marvel and DC. What Universe it operates in given the multiversal inconsistencies between the two is anyone's guess! Yes, Marvel and DC have also done crossovers (both using their standard-at-the-time-they-were printed hero sets) at varying intervals, but not recently. The dynamics of both of them and their parent companies and the comic/superhero market in general are different than they once were. I don't think the Amalgam Heroes have done crossovers with their original imprint counterparts or anyone for that matter. It's just worth noting cause it did happen once. There are also those who believe that the financial difficulties of COVID have strained the Comic Book World to the point that a NEW crossover between Marvel and DC would be a beneficial thing. No guarantee of that actually happening though, but the strange effects of a strange year might best be solved by something big and strange! I also like the idea of using this thread to make note of comic crossovers in general, not just Marvel, DC, and Amalgam. |
Marvel and DC used to do crossovers infrequently. Not only Amalgam, but the reader voted DC vs Marvel comic that led into it as well. They also did an annual crossover in the 90's which was fun, too.
While DC has been under WB's thumb for ages, Marvel becoming Disney's property has made crossovers somewhat more difficult to accomplish between the two. |

The entire Wolverine vs Lobo fight happens behind a bar, and Wolverine stands up at the end as the victor. |

Speaking of the Marvel and DC stuff, I get why certain characters are paired up: Captain America and Batman, Hulk and Superman, etc. But like... why was Spider-Man paired up with Superboy? I know literally nothing about the latter, so anyone wanna shed light on that? |

Man, I miss Ben Reily. A shame he's in like no Spidey media nowadays. |

You think you've seen most if not all there is to see... and then something you didn't know pops in without warning and you have to reevaluate what you thought you knew!
That pretty much sums up what I was thinking when I found the following at an antiques shop this afternoon. Another Marvel/DC crossover entry which is set in a world where both can interact... and some apparently share experiences when they become entirely new Amalgams (a temporary occurrence as they don't seem to remember much after the time of the new Amalgams ends)! |

There was Collectors Con in Marksville, Louisiana this morning and I found a whole bunch of Amalgams!
