New NHK Tokusatsu Hero Show Chosoku Parahero Gundeen
 

NHK announced their original tokusatsu hero show Chosoku Parahero Gundeen starring Sou Okuno of Kamen Rider Zi-O fame and Fuuka Koshiba of Tokusatsu GAGAGA fame.

SYNOPSIS
Taishi Morimiya is a 17-year old high school student who aims to be a para-athlete, with Ryo Fukai by his side as coach and his father, factory workers, and childhood friends encouraging him. Then one day, a handsome alien by the name Goo appears saying that he has taken refuge on Earth after escaping a massacre on the Gemini constellation. And shortly after, the alien that was chasing down Goo appears, when suddenly the Mode Shifter shines and covers Taishi with a protecter and reveals him in a wheelchair-riding form.

Huh! Interesting, always fun to see other companies do a Toku

That pretty cool. Gundeen design is quite different being a wheelchair hero. The action scenes must be quite different from usual then.

Oh that's a very cool concept! I like how the body part of the suit looks more organic and alien while the wheelchair is more like a spaceship.

This certainly seems interesting. Can't wait to see how it plays out!

Fuka Koshiba was really good in Tokusatsu Gagaga making it one of my favorite shows of all time. I'm looking forward to this.

This looks and sounds interesting, if I find it, I'm definitely going to see it. Of course, I haven't found the episodes for Tokusatsu GaGaGa or Dogengers which I've been wanting to see.

A new Tokusatsu Drama series titled Super Speed Parahero Gandeen has been revealed!

• So Okuno will play Daishi Morimiya, a high school student that transforms into a superhero!

• Koshiba Fuka will play Kyo Fukai!

• Takeshi Tsuruno will play Gen Morimiya, a positive dad to boost his son’s dreams! He’s 44 years old and an engineer who runs the town factory “Morimiya Motors” in the suburbs of Tokyo!

• Hayashi Crow will play Guu, a handsome alien who fell from the sky.

•Morisato Nakamura will play Rio Seino, a childhood friend of ambition, a second-year high school student. She is 17 years old. She often comes to the Morimiya family and she has a part-time job making dinner. She has a strange and delicate sense of cooking and fashion, but what is her mysterious power?

• Toshihiro Wada will play Motoo Sakamoto, Asahi University of Physical Education professor and academic advisor in Kyoto. He is 44 years old. A childhood friend of Gen, who recommended a para-athletics wheelchair race to his ambitions.

• Gandeen, a hero of justice who transforms his ambitions!
With the power given by Guu, the ambition is transformed into a special protector. Fight by making full use of plant-derived energy, which has undergone technological innovation on the alert star.

• Lagert, earth invading vanguard monster.
A dangerous creature tamed and semi-mechanized by the Eltron tribe of the alert star. This creature follows Guu...

Synopsis: Taishi Moriyama, a 17-year-old high school student who dreams to become a wheelchair track and field athlete. Serving as his coach is former track and field athlete Kyo Fukai. Along with his factory worker of a father, and his childhood friend, they are eager to begin training.

One day, a handsome alien named Guu arrives on Earth and claims that he escaped a genocide from one of Earth's twin stars. Following Guu was a giant monster who attacked Taishi's home. Guu hands Taishi a special transformation item, turning his entire body with a special wheelchair armor.

The series will have 3 episodes total! Super Speed Parahero Gandeen is set to premiere on June 26th, with the last two episodes airing on July 3rd and July 10th.

Now that I've gotten over the shock of the main hero literally being Zi-O... here's some more shockers!

The actor of the mentor Gen Morimiya, Takeshi Tsurono; was Shin Asuka in Ultraman Dyna -- the main hero himself!

The alien Goo, Karasu Hayashi? Ultraman Z's Kaburagi; Cerebro's main host!

The coach Mika Fei, Fuka Koshiba? Kano Nakamura, the main character of Tokusatsu GaGaGa!

Really liking Gundeen's design. It has an organic look to it and kind of reminds me of some of the armors from Destiny.

And, OH MY GOSH! Lagert looks amazing!! I'm such a sucker for giant monsters in Tokusatsu, and this looks absolutely magnificent.

Also really like the Toku alumni featured here, always nice to see these people return.

Dang, Tsuruno is busy this year singing for Zenkaiger and now playing the dad in a superhero show.

I'm so sure that the entire Gundeen Cast Members will have to follow the strict standard health protocols given by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to prevent the spreading of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. And they're on the bubble (isolated) locations for the shooting of the said miniseries on NHK. Don't know if this will be released on NHK World (with English Subtitles or with English Dubbing), too.

Not the first time, So Okuno played a disabled character. He was in a movie where he played an amputee ballet dancer. Good on him for taking different roles.

I've always wondered if lights in toku helmets would make it hard for the suit actors to see.

This looks amazing so far. Looking forward to seeing it in action!

There's usually "eyeholes" conveniently placed around the light-up areas. A good example would be the original Kamen Rider helmet, the eyeholes are underneath his large insect eyes. But yeah, it is interesting how they can see, whilst still eluding the audience.

The first episode is available subbed and I'm loving it so far.

Now it has been many months later since this post that I am quoting from gashatfreak, but I just remembered there was a live action superhero show in America called M.A.N.T.I.S., which was about a paraplegic scientist who become a powersuit-wearing superhero kinda like War Machine after Civil War. It's no Gandeen but thought I'd bring it up for those interested.

I'm a little surprised neither Go-Busters nor Beast Morphers went with that "wheelchair user who can walk with a power suit" route for Beet Buster, since the bulky tech armor on the legs would've fit perfectly for that.

Though as far as I know, Gundeen is still the first to actually do superheroics in a wheelchair, so that's still a pretty big claim to fame!

Pretty much. It aired when MMPR was still the hot new thing on TV and it was on FOX, the same channel that aired Power Rangers in America at the time.

This might be kind of random but I've been genuinely wondering why a lot of listings have this show as "Gandeen" or some other variation? It looks like the show itself has that part of the name written out as "Gand-D".

Regardless, this is a cool concept and I'm very interested after seeing NHK's other cool concept highlighting para-sports through anime with Ani x Para. I'll have to check this out now.

Because that's how the katakana is pronounced. The logo has it written in English the way it is for a very specific reason that's explained in the show itself.

I really wanna go over this show at some point. Unfortunately for me the torrents for Episode 2 and 3 didn't work out so I was left with pretty shoddy quality versions for most of Gandeen... but man what a fun little series! It's lovely how much it just gets what makes Toku good with the down-to-earth family and interpersonal drama and optimism for the future; which is exactly the kind of thing I'd want out of a series like this.

In particular something I really really REALLY appreciated is that Taishi's ambition is to be an astronaut -- and I think something you'd often see for a disabled character is that getting shot down, or more than likely them having a more 'realistic' goal to begin with; but one of the running themes throughout most Toku shows is characters having lofty goals and aspirations and punching through all barriers with their determination to get there -- and again, that lands so perfectly for a series about a disabled character!! It's just such a wonderful example of what I love about Gandeen and I can't gush about it enough; using an understanding and love of the genre to lift up disabled people. Just to speak on a slightly more personal level, using the genre I love so much intertwined perfectly with a real life topic I care so much about?? This is one of those shows that's kinda made for me!

The action scenes going all out to be as unique as they are only furthers this as well; there's so much creativity going in keeping every element in mind and I love the sense of scale going on with the monster's size which led to a huge city-wide brawl. I'm so happy to hear that we're apparently to be getting more out of this creative team; this could mean so much for Tokusatsu as a whole!
