New Godzilla Movie coming in 2023
We have a new Godzilla movie coming out in 2023. The film will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Best known for directing Always: Sunset on Third Street, Parasyte: Part 1-2, and Lupin the 3rd: The First.

Wow! Great. I wonder if it will be a new beginning or a continuation? In any case, I'm intrigued and waiting for the details.
By the way, are there any new projects foreseen for Gamera? The last film was 16 years ago, will there really be no more? |
Nice! I thought Shin Godzilla was neat, so I was pretty sad Toho didn't do a proper movie for years afterwards.
|
Today was certainly a great day for Godzilla. And I'm excited for this news!
I know Legendary has another Godzilla and Kong movie next year, but I'm honestly more excited for Japan's new Godzilla. It may also be wishful thinking, but I'd love another Tokusatsu Style Godzilla film, since these shorts they've been doing for Godzilla Fest are phenomenal. Though, I won't mind too much, especially given this is being directed by the guy who did Godzilla the Ride. |
I'm curious what approach to the franchise they'll take here.
|
It is hard to wait that long. 3.Nov.2023. I hope it is worth waiting.

My friends, tomorrow is the big reveal! After a special countdown featuring all the Live-Action Japanese Godzilla films every day, only one slot remains and that will be for the newest entry in the Godzilla Series from Japan.
Now, given the Director, Takashi Yamazaki's works, it is highly likely to be a CGI Godzilla film, since he's a VFX Director as well who's previous romps with Godzilla include the opening sequence of Always Sunset on Third Street 2 and Godzilla: The Ride. Both of which have a very vintage Japanese look, which should give you an idea of how it might look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EA9dahpeGlQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c1xXgMCtUw Anyway, I'm looking forward to the reveal and the film's eventual release stateside! |
The new project is officially known as "Godzilla Minus One."
"Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force, which you already get a sense of from the teaser trailer and poster,” said Koji Ueda, President of Toho International. “The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the ‘minus.’" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlceGpbGgvE Releases November 3rd in Japan- with a US release in December! |

I like. I don't think it will be possible to repeat the success of Shin Godzilla, but I hope for a good film.
|
It's hard to tell from the little we see in the trailer, but I hope they capture the "guy in a suit" look that Shin did so well with its CGI!

It also seems like they're shifting the time period here.
In the original film Godzilla surfaced some time after Japan's recovery from WWII iirc. Here it looks and sounds like he's surfacing literally right after the war itself. |
I miss my chance to see Shin Godzilla on the big screen due to time and money back in 2016. This will be my chance to see another Japanese Godzilla film on the big screen.

I do dig that we're kind of taking Godzilla back to his days of being a force of nature. I love the heroic Goji, but his roots is as a walking warning of the dangers of nuclear war.

Looks promising. While I do appreciate taking Godzilla back to his roots, between this and Shin Godzilla I do worry that they're going to get stuck in this holding pattern of only doing solo Godzilla movies (i.e. no other monsters, just miming the original). They can be some of the best in the series, but I also think this works when they are the exception, not the rule.

Oh, I'm ready to see this Godzilla in action after seeing the teaser trailer.

After being absent for personal reasons, I'm back! And yes, I got to see all the reveals and I'm even more excited for this!
Godzila: Minus One! That's a title. In another way, instead of referring to the "From Zero to Minus" which is brilliant, it can also be a slight nod to the announcements of detonations (eg. "T Minus One") which serves as a perfect analogy to Godzilla as a living nuclear bomb. The design, while heavily resembling The Ride design, it is actually quite different. Most predominantly, the dorsal plates. The spines on the plates are long and spiky and are more jagged and rough. The neck is longer and thinner, the hands are smaller and have no opposable thumbs, the legs are slightly different, the skin is burned and scarred, the eyes are slightly bigger, and the whole body isn't as bulky. I love it! I'll even go as far to say as this is my favorite modern Godzilla design (including Legendary's), overtaking Ultima who held it previously. And what's more? A US release date in less than a month? And the prospect of being in major theaters (or at least, Regal Theaters, which there's one near me and ironically showed Shin Ultraman, that I unfortunately had to miss for reasons)? SOLD! I always thought there were no movies, or at least American Movies, that would bring me to the theater this year, but because they don't say "limited screening" there is hope, and I'm all for it! On another note, it's kind of funny how Oppenheimer premieres this month and Godzilla Minus One a few months later, as if it's a prequel. Not exactly interested in it, but I still find it funny. |

At present, the Reiwa Godzilla Era is like the Millenium Era, so far mostly anthologies. However, supposedly a Shin Godzilla Sequel was considered by Anno and even mentioned by Yamazaki (Minus One's director), but didn't take off the ground in Anno's case, and Yamazaki said it wouldn't be right if he did that instead of Anno, that and he's been wanting to do his own Godzilla Movie for a long time.
There was a rumor stating that there might be two Godzillas, one mutated and one not, fighting, however, I don't mind if that happens or not. Again, at this point, we don't know if Toho's revived Godzilla Universe will start here, or what some people are right in saying that refers to Legendary's Monsterverse. Only time will tell. I personally would love a new era with traditional Tokusatsu and Kaiju battle flicks, but I wouldn't mind if Minus One is the new direction, since I'm loving everything I'm seeing for it right now. |
I'm a bit let down that they are not using a suit for Godzilla. If Super Sentai and Ultraman can have kajiu battles with rubber suits, so can Godzilla.

Good old Japanese disaster movie Godzilla!
|
Ohhhhh, I really like the atmosphere of that trailer. The level of destruction and terror along Godzilla's sheer strength reminds me a lot of the very first movie.
|
So, the lady says "Is that... Godzilla?" in the trailer... does that mean Godzilla also attacked Japan before the war? How else would she know it? Or the name?
As for the idea, well, wasn't the first Godzilla movie also in 1950, so only 5 years after the war? Technology levels will be similar here too I guess. Which will make stopping him pretty hard... But, I am just glad to see Godzilla back to destroying cities, instead of murdering random kaiju that never bothered him while humanity cheers for him as its savior... |

there's no foe like Ghidorah or Gigan in the movie.
|
I don't see "Limited Screening" or "Select Theaters", so this makes me ecstatic! I'll finally see a Japanese film in theaters (unless I go to Japan and watch it first, but I'd probably watch it again anyway)!
I still say I'm more excited for this than Legacy of Monsters or The New Empire (which has sadly been delayed until further notice), but I'm a simple man. Anything Godzilla related will probably gain my attention. And while it goes without saying, I absolutely love how this movie looks! Godzilla looks magnificent, the vintage Japan background helps this movie stand out, and so far, the music sounds great! Very much looking forward to seeing this! |
the new Godzilla look is great than the Shin one.
|
I'm pretty excited for this. It looks like a nice blend of both the US and Japanese films. I do miss the suits, though...but I could always just go back to the 30 or so films made in that style :lol

The Godzilla CG looks great!
|
I'm really loving everything we've been seeing from this movie so far. Definitely excited for this!
I'll admit, I have been entertaining the idea of visiting Japan just to see this movie. |
|
Boy, do I not like how they Americanized the trailer...
Don't get me wrong, it still looks amazing, and I can't wait to see it. But I honestly don't like the style of American Movie Trailers, especially since Godzilla Minus One's trailers so far have been amazing (one teaser, main trailer, and the TV Spots). But that's a nitpick I'll not bother divulging into today... Anyway, While I may not be able to have my Japan Trip this year (heck, I wanted to go during Godzilla Day but that's past now), I'm still very much looking forward to the December release. |
