Let's Watch Kamen Rider Ryuki 45-50!
The saga of Kamen Rider Ryuki comes to a close! Well, the TV series that is. Will Akiyama save Ogawa Eri? Will Shinji make his wish come to fruition? Will Asakura settle the score with Kitaoka?
Does Kanzaki Shiro have any heart left, left to even listen to his sister? Join us to discuss the conclusion of the Kamen Rider Ryuki TV series! |
Alright we finally get to discuss this! I thought the ending was better than both the movie(ep: Final) and 13 Riders. I take it the TV series ending is the canonical ending. It was a melancholy and sad conclusion. I was SHOCKED Shinji died, I did not expect that to happen at all!. Surprised to see how Akiyama and Odin's last fight turned out. If not for Yui I think Ren would be dead.
It was disappointing to not see Asakura and Kitaoka have one last go at it however I think this was the writers' way of throwing fans for a loop. Also I was expecting more from Magna Giga. Genocyder...ate the guy... I can't help but WANT the Riders to all remember what happened...there is a hint that at least Shinji and Akiyama know something is up, as it is very awkward when they meet at the end at Tea Atori. If anything the last episode was very symbolic, you have to watch it from beginning to end to get all the symbolism. I had to rewind quite a bit to fully understand WTF was happening. Definitely wasn't a typical ending, and everything wasn't directly stated. However, as confusing as it was, I thought it was a well directed and written episode. It definitely got me thinking and to me, was a great ending. |
I liked how they played out the last 10 minutes, but loathed what it was doing. All you know is there's still many more takes left before they break the chain, though I like to see that montage at the end.
|
I actually adore the ending to this series. It does everything right that I've always wanted out of a rider show. Shinji's death was incredibly powerful. The wide-eyed heartfelt kid who just wanted to stop the fighting lost his life fighting and finally humanized Ren in a way that I wouldn't have thought possible.
Ren, my god Ren. After everything he's done and seen, for him to become the person he is by the final episode is beautiful. Watching Shinji die in his arms was painful that's for certain. And seeing him truly be outclassed by Odin in every way just goes to show that Kanzaki would not have begun the battle without the absolute assurance that his rider would win. Odins' existence is proof that Kanzaki had total control even if we didn't always think he did. I actually love that the sort of fated Ouja/Zolda fight didn't happen. Kitaokas' death was great and subtle and I thought it was incredibly powerful that Goro took his place as zolda in the final fight. Ouja thought he finally obtained his victory only to find out that he had been completely bested. Ouja really came out as the best and most interesting character of the series. His death was the most interesting and, to me, the most tragic. I can't even begin to express how much this series as a whole is good. It just grabs you and doesn't really let go aside from a few less than spectacular extra riders (looking at you Gai, Tiger, Imperor) |

When fighting with Odin, when Kanzaki finally gave in to Yui and Odin went haywire, you can tell Ren knew he didn't have any advantage over Odin but that he was striking Odin with all the power he had left for the final blow. It was as if Ren knew he himself was going to die but decided to fight not only for Eri, but for Shinji in the end. I have to say too, the impact Shinji's death had on Ren was unexpected, yet perfectly timed. Kudos to the screenwriters for that one. It also showed that Takamasa Suga did an incredible job portraying Shinji, especially his last words before he died in Ren's arms. Just so sad. It was cool to see Goro as Zolda, I just wish it happened earlier so that we could see Goro fleshed out as Zolda more, see what made him different as Kitaoka when Zolda. I was just hoping Kitaoka would be the one to take Asakura out, as both had a grudge against each other throughout the series. However, it was neat that Kitaoka technically had the last laugh; he knew Asakura wanted to kill him but he didn't give him the opportunity. Hell, he didn't even care, he even said himself that he lived a fine life and didn't really think the Rider War was necessary anymore. It was cool to see how everything turned up in the end, Toujo running into Shinji on accident, Megumi and Shimada still somewhat antagonistic towards each other, Tezuka showing up to say his predictions are always right, Yui's grandma showing up to say her predictions are always right, and Ren and Shinji's "reunion" at Tea Atori. I was happy to see all of them alright. |
I decided to rewatch the last 10 minutes. It's been a year since I last saw it, but something about that scene of them with their child selfs still just gets me. Maybe it's just in the way I relate myself to the characters, and knowing the story is just starting.

To my knowledge, I think Shinji is the first titular Kamen Rider to die and more interestingly for it to be an out-of-suit death. Ren's reaction to Shinji dying in his arms was so strong and powerful that it made up for what an ass he was for most of the series.
Asakura's final stand was a little strange. Being cheated out of killing a man he had become obsessed with pushed him over the edge...truly a vexed individual. In the end...I dunno. Would it have been better without the reset? It would have been dark as hell but I think it would have further cemented Ryuki's reputation as one of the most unique Rider series of this generation. In hindsight I can more or less see why this show did not do well over in Japan especially with its target demographic being kids. The stories were rather dark, the main villain being Kanzaki Shirou wasn't a dude with a special form or the "ultimate badass" type character, maybe too much focus was placed on the secret between Yui and Kanzaki....In a way, this show is up there with GARO in terms of mature storytelling. I mean even Imperer's death was pretty fucked up in that scene where his fiancee is waiting for him not knowing he had become a notch on Asakura's belt. This was the series that got me back into Toku. The X or Highlander of the Kamen Rider franchise. |
On the subject of Asakura who is in my mind the greatest Villain in Heisei Rider mythos, I loved how the writers really pulled no punches in portraying him as utter scum.
Killing his own family in a fire, playing a traumatized scarred victim just to bait his brother to finish the job (Seriously...What the fuck?), destroying a talented pianist's career murdering Raia, murdering Gai, using a young girl as bait for his Mirror Monster hunt, murdering Imperer...And yet I find it hilarious that this guy could have a seat with Kitaoka and Ren to collectively mock Shinji. Also he seemed to like offering people food. Maybe because he doesn't like the idea of people going hungry. Strange character trait for a pure psychopath. He was Kanzaki's ringer, the guy Kanzaki could rely on to thin the herd which was why his deck was rigged with three contract cards. Survive? Who needs Survive when you've got Unite! I love how they never bothered to give him a clearly defined objective or wish. He was there for the carnage. And I love him for it. |

I like Ryuki's ending. I think a lot of the plot lines are closed up nicely and you guys have already made all the good points about why the ending works. I do like having some of the other versions of the ending around, but the series one is definitely my favorite (even if it's tragically lacking in Miho). |

I think it's downfall was the fights in particular, being predictable. For the 1st half of the series either the monster died or ran away, and if it did die, it was usually Ren or Shinji using Final Vent and if it ran away, it was running away from the Final Vent. Basically the fights became predictable. This does change later aside from the Survive Card being somewhat of a deus ex machina. By the last episodes the fights are a lot less predictable. In this respect, I think the movie, Episode Final, excelled. Simply put, the fights in the majority of the series, due to predictability, did not seem on par with the mature storytelling. The storytelling and characterizations is where this series excelled. To see the way Akiyama ended up in the end was a surprise. Even for Kitaoka, even Shinji said something to the matter of "well if he's fighting just to live then I can't really blame him anymore!". I loved how we got to know the characters just as Shinji did; his experience mirrored ours. Speaking of dark..finding out that Yui was technically somewhat dead...nuts! The whole story was due to Shiro not being able to take loss. Quote:
Asakura is the bad guy to end up liking, like Magneto and others. For me, seeing him take out all those Riders left me wanting to see someone kick his ass. Asakura was entertaining because he was deadly and unpredictable. I remember when he pulled out his extra contract cards and was like "WTF?! He has more than Jun!". Then when he pulled out Unite Vent I was like "Alright WTF x 10 that's not even fair!". Asakura managed to kill the biggest dick in the series(Gai), and the most peaceful(Tezuka). By way of karma he was going to bite it one way or another. I did like how the moments where it seemed like Asakura had a heart, he shoves a nail right through it. THAT is excellent storytelling by way of the writers. |
Everything until they hit the reset button was fantastic. I am so tired of reset button endings, as they are overdone and cliche.

I hated Imperor and glad he couldn't escape Mirror World. He's another shmuck that tried to hard. It echoed a primary motif of Kamen Rider Ryuki; be careful what you wish for. He DID eventually get what he wanted but ended up losing it all. Had he not taken Kanzaki Shirou's opportunity to become a rider he would have lived rich and possibly marry that one chick. Sano-san was a tool anyways, the ONLY likeable things are his costume and his power of multiple contract monsters, his attacks were cool too. I LOVED it when Shinji punched him in the face at Tea Atori though! Kid had it coming. I especially agree with your last statement, referring to the writing of Asakura leaving you liking him more than the main Riders. While Akiyama is my favorite, Asakura was surprisingly one of the most fleshed out characters in the series. I remember my friend telling me(when I was in the early episodes), saying the "guy in the jail is a bad ass". He most certainly was. Not only was Asakura a potent fighter but he was conniving and a strategic thinker. Who could see his reunion with his brother Akira as a trap? Just when you think he has a heart, he kills his own brother. The dude did not even want to see him until Momoi Reiko convinced him! Little did she know she led the poor sap to his demise. I'm still in awe of the last minutes of the show. To see everyone show up and come across each other under random circumstances, that was pretty cool. I am disappointed that Megumi and Goro didn't interact more. There was just 1 episode of them relating to each other as Kitaoka's former and current bodyguards, and then karaoke/Goro babysitting her and Shimada. There definitely could've been a cool side story of Goro as Zolda II protecting Megumi. |
That reminds me, i'm really glad they're finally coming out soon with Figuarts Tiger. I needed to have one after finishing the series. I just really liked his story and nice end. I'm not too sure about buying the rest of the Ryuki Riders for the price though. The series was pretty good for the most part. Is Faiz next?
|
So I guess I was the only one who was slightly confused by the ending?
When they showed Ren going to see Eri in the hospital and she was alive, I figured he got his wish. And that made his loss of Shinji even more saddening. Then there's that montage of everyone alive and well running into each other but without remembering a thing - even Asakura, who seemingly wasn't much of a psychopath. When I watched it I didn't think that was actually the ending, just a nice thing thrown in to celebrate the ending and show off what could have been were there no Rider fight. But the way you guys are talking, that was the actual ending. Was there something I missed indicating this was really Ren's wish? As an aside, I don't think anyone but Ren remembered what happened. Shinji was still painfully oblivious to everything. It was just Ren, a stranger now, treating him so strangely that elicited hisi "wait what's going on?" reaction. |
All this talk about the last few episodes takes me back. I remember watching last few episodes in the closing days in my final semester. I was speechless for minute. Felt like I had been punched in the gut and thrown across the room. Shinji dying, Ren's reaction to it, Kitaoka's death, and Asakura's quest for revenge being foiled driving him to madness.
And then we learn that this probably isn't the first time this has happened. It was hinted at a bit when Odin first appeared, but this confirmed Kanzaki had the power of the reset button on his side. He doesn't like the outcome, start over. It's kinda fucked up when you think about, that these people could have been going through this for who knows how long. Anyway, I really enjoyed the series overall. For those who did, I recommend checking out an anime called Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The series has many similar elements to Ryuki that it feels like a Magical Girl little sister to Ryuki :lol |

BTW, My-Hime is another anime similar to Ryuki. |
The reset is a debate I'd rather not get into. But of the 4 possible endings of Ryuki, this was probably the least depressing so I can accept it. The Movie ending was just as dark and the two TV Special endings were so twisted that I hope neither were canonical.
|
This ending is bay far the most powerful and best. The Episode Final ending is ridiculously ambiguous so I can't stand that. The primary ending for 13 Riders is awesome whereas it's reset ending is horrible. Overall I think it's easy to see that the TV ending is the true one since the 2 movies each represent an AU Ryuki-verse.

Up until that point, I had really liked what was done though. Gorou proving his loyalty. Kitaoka accepting his fate happily - though he never did make that date. :( Asakura being robbed of revenge and finally just gunned down instead of arrested. Ren in absolute anguish. Shinji dead after finally making up his mind. It was all very powerful and emotional and I loved it. Then time gets reset? (Though with Odin apparently defeated and use of the Time Vent card not shown, I don't buy it so easily...) That's not a good ending. It was better than Episode Final at least since it had an ending, and I've yet to watch 13 Riders... But still. It wasn't my favorite outcome, because it made that emotional roller coaster they had just put me through and tore it all down. |
What was the name of the piano music during the time reversal scene? I've been searching all morning for it.
|
Well here's the part I think the writers had a problem with. They had essentially created a Grand Guignol in a show which was primarily meant for kids ages 12 and up. Somewhere down the line I think a compromise had to be made so that they wouldn't have parent groups breathing down their necks. Sure, Agito and Kuuga had a lot more darker themes but they had more...conventional endgames as compared to Ryuki.
And to be frank this debate only comes up when viewed by fans of our demographic, the older fans who are familiar with terms like Deus Ex Machina. I had this debate with several forumers about the Legend of Korra along the same vein about how much they can push the boundaries in a kids' show. If I were a kid, and I had watched every Rider in Ryuki essentially dying, I'd be crushed. Just like how Optimus died in the old animated movie. So someone on the writing staff thought of the children. I can live with it. |

Then again, it wasn't a huge hit in Japan for whatever reason so I think they just moved past it and focused on Faiz. |

So should Kanzaki get a Figuart ;)
|
From what I saw, once the reset was done Shiro lives but dies in the US while Yui stayed dead as a childd.
It's implied that once Ren put the ring on Eri's finger, he died. |
Quote:
Methinks I'll just be happier if I pretend the montage was a "what if" and that they really did all die... |
I used to look at the happy montage as the way their lives could've played out had the Rider Battle not happened. Now I really do see it as the reset. Once Kanzaki realized that Yui was happier having died in the fire I think this was his gift to the riders. Bringing them all back and giving them a second chance. I don't think Ren's victory or wish had anything to do with it. This was all on Kanzaki.

So if someone were to establish a loose "timeline" of Ryuki, would it be:
13 Riders → Episode Final → TV Series Yeah, Odin had that fight won but whatever Kanzaki was feeling affected the flow of the fight. Regarding Shinji's character. Despite being for all intents and purposes a wuss for a vast majority of the series, Shinji never once lost track of what his mission was: To stop the Rider War and avert civilian deaths from the Mirror Monsters. Painfully naive, I think Shinji's story was in fact the most tragic of the Riders. His background is never fleshed out aside from his occupation of being an amateur journalist but I don't think they needed to because he was meant to be the everyman trying to do the right thing...only to have the right thing blow up in his face over and over again. From being used by the Room 401 crew to being mocked constantly by Ren and even forced to dress up as a French maid by Kitaoka...he had it pretty rough. But he never lost sight of his goal without going into a ridiculous monologue or explanation of why he is right. Shinji often gets dismissed as being the least interesting of the Ryuki characters despite being the title Rider but I think he complimented the others. He was the conscience of the show in the face of desperation and ambition. |

I don't count Episode Final or 13 Riders as canon. First off, 13 Riders did not have an ending, with either ending. You either get an ending with Shinji just standing there ready to battle or an ending with Shinji being taunted. Plus, the personalities of the characters were way too off. As for Episode Final, it does not fit no matter how you slice it. You either have to look at it as before Tiger, but that isn't possible, because Impaler would also not have been there. Or you have to look at it after Tiger, but again, impossible since Shinji knew the truth about Yui before Tiger died.

I think Episode Final was an ending aimed at fans who didn't want a "reset" ending like the TV series. Quote:
I got a question for you guys, with regards to winning and losing, Akiyama realized that it was hard for him to strike the last blow, whereas for Shinji, the same thing happened when he fought Akiyama to a stand still and had the upper hand. Do you think Shinji evolved into the better fighter? Also I get confused, Shinji realized his wish towards the end after talking to Okubo, who reinforces his belief to do the right thing. At some point Shinji wants to seal the Mirror World, the same goal Kagawa was after(although Kagawa wanted to take out Yui in doing so). So... What was Shinji's wish at the end of the series? |
Quote:
As for Shinjis' wish. I'm not sure. Other than sealing Mirror World, which he knew couldn't be done if Yui was alive, I don't know that he had one. I think in the end Shinji knew he had nothing to fight for. And a fighter with nothing to fight for isn't needed. In the end he may very well have wished for Ren to be broken free of the Rider Battle. |
Actually I think this quote may say it best:
Quote:
1 billion forum points to anyone who knows who I quoted. |

His death scene is one of the best scenes of the entire series. I kept thinking, "oh he'll use the Survive card and maybe he will be alright", but no, dude had a heartbreaking conversation with Akiyama then freaking DIES. Shinji didn't go out in a blaze of glory but damn what a sad ending! I remember reading that when Burai died in Zyuranger, there was a letter writing campaign to bring him back, but that the writers, while acknowledging his popularity, decided not to, because they wanted to show that even heroes can die. Might have been the same premise behind killing Shinji off, the most heroic of the Riders in Ryuki dying yet never yielding from his purpose; to protect others. |
