The "How can you not like Anime?!" Thread
Figure I'd split this off from the worst Sentai thread before it got to far off topic.
Here's quotes of the convention so far, starting with me replying to one of Matrixbeast's comments. Quote:

@Dr Kain: DBZ is the perfect example of shorter is better. Dragon Ball (Z) Kai exists to re-edit the show as close to the manga as possible through the Cell Saga. That's the first 194 episodes of the original show. In the re-edited Kai they cut it in half to 98 episodes. There's more they could've cut too, but they'd have to reanimate a lot more scenes. But yeah, 26 episodes is my general rule of thumb with anime. I can enjoy the long ones, but the longer it gets the less I'm likily to finish. PS In fact you mentioned my all time favorite anime in that little list. @KRiderZim: Like most Miyazaki films it's a good movie. I'm not that big on anime movies though. |
I'll echo what's been said about the Simpsons and their overly llllllooooonnnnngggggg run. I think there should be enough episodes to get people to connect to the characters and plot and a run that's satisfiable, not just dragging on and on.(Again, looking at you Simpsons)
The thing with anime is that's not every show is going to fit with everyone. You have to do a lot of research and of course watch a episode or two to see if this show's right for you. You can't lump every show together because of bad experiences.I thought I was more into actionly shows, but as I grew older I found I enjoyed romantic comedies more. Of course Princess Mononoke is a wonderfully done movie, animated or otherwise. I catch a good chunk of it when I had HBO and one day plan to watch it in its entirety. |
I haven't enjoyed anime since ronin warriors and sailor moon when I was in 5th grade. Not to say I don't like it. But lord knows my discovery of Hentai sure scared me off ever since.

I just don't like Anime as a story telling medium. Not for the stories, since those vary between awful and amazing, but because of common conventions that just get to me. The biggest being fanservice.
However, to be fair, the most recent anime I attempted to watch, Clannad, wasn't really bad. It just chose to start off with the worst possible candidate for their character based story arc because I REALLY hate Fuko. |
I've gotta say that I love long anime. Maybe not DBZ length but I absolutely adored YuYu Hakusho and it was damn long. I haven't seen much in recent years to watch but to be honest after I hit up Toku I lost alot of interest in anime. I've been a hardcore Gundam fan for about 12 years now, I own all of the north american releases on dvd and I've got subs of everything that we havent gotten. I like Gundam as a franchise, I loved Code Geass, Death Note, Detective Conan, Robotech (NOT MACROSS), Saint Seya, and a host of other shows. If I hadn't been completely absorbed by Toku in the last few years I'd love to check out some new shows like Tiger and Bunny because I'm sure I'd love them.

I love anime. Well, I am Filipino, we usually do XD. I usually like action-y anime, but some like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach- I ended up just reading the manga instead when they started to switch arcs (for One Piece- the time skip, for Naruto- again, the time skip, for Bleach- after the Zanpakuto becoming alive arc.) I actually like it when they make an anime 13 episodes, it makes me wanna see more. I'm usually a sucker for cutesy-romantic anime like Zero No Tsukaima, which was spread out over the years in 4 different 13 episode seasons. That's what made it fresh and enjoyable to me. The only "long, recent-years" anime I watched all the way through was Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, which aired 203 episodes.
On the topic of Hayao Miyazaki films, Princess Mononoke is definitely my favorite, followed by Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. |

Than I watched Inuyasha. |

I never loved anime.
I loved certain shows and series, but I never watched a show just because it was an anime. That was where a lot of contention rose between my otaku friends and I, whereas they treated Anime as an infallible medium with poor series being rare and I was far, far more critical. And Death Note is stupid. I could never see why it was so praised. |

I used to love anime. Then moe became a thing.
I also describe it as the moment that the art style shifted from females always looking older than they were supposed to be to always looking younger. Anime is just plain creepy these days. |

there are too many patterns...from the love triangles, the fighting tournemants to the mecha/armor upgrades...hell I love gundam, and it is always fight in space, reluctant hero, then re-entry, learn a lesson on earth, upgrade mech, then go to space with a new resolve to end the war...Gurren Lagan was the last really good anime I have seen...and I'm an OLD school fan...

I think it's fair to say I'm not a big anime guy. There've been shows and movie I've watched that I loved, but I'm not the kind of guy who keeps up with all the new stuff and has opinions for every moe shovelware series* that comes out. I love, and I mean LOVE super robots specifically, but that's almost a different beast from other shounen, at least from what I've seen. On the subject of long series, I've only watched one: GaoGaiGar, which is 49 episodes and a six episode OVA. Now, I love the shit out of GaoGaiGar, but I can see how people could find it and other episodes of its type and length to be too drawn out. The main advantage I see to it is that when you spend that much time with the characters, you feel more attached to them when crazy shit starts happening. GaoGaiGar is supposed to take place over a whole year, and thanks to it being 49 episodes, it feels like it, meaning that when the shit hits the fan, it feels that much bigger. Now, I can also see how it could just be drawn out for no good reason, especially with manga, which from what I've seen, has a tendency to just be SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE story SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE SPLASH PAGE. And again, I'm dead serious when I say that if you're all hating on anime OR have even the slightest modicum of interest in it, but haven't seen any Miyazaki movies, you need to fix what's wrong with your life and watch some. Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky are all great places to start. |
You see, I was a huge Ranma 1/2 fan as I got into anime.. so I knew Rumiko Takahashi's problem with serial comics, never developing characters/relationships, and endings that don't tie things up. At least Inuyasha has a real ending..
True story, I watched the first 50-100 episodes of the anime, then skipped to the last several chapters of the manga years later to see how the series ended and found out that I missed absolutely nothing of importance by skipping about half of the series. Death Note was alright. The anime came out around the same time as Code Geass season 1 so there were too interesting shows with anti-heroes to contrast against each other. The thing with Death Note is it relied too heavily on contrivance and coincidental circumstance.. and drug on too long. Code Geass had a fallible anti-hero protagonist but then fell too heavily into mecha merchandising and pulled a Gundam SEED Destiny where the second season tried too hard to pander to the fans and sucked Quote:

I think only late 80s to 90s anime like Slam Dunk, GTO, Tomorrow's Joe, Dragonball -Dragonball GT, Doremon interest me...and some super robot related shows likw Gurren Laggann, Getter, and etc. I just cant stand shows where it all depress, dark/evil or when the main character narrate his/her life at the beginning of every episode...

But hey, I should be fair. At least each story arc had the exact same villain. :p |
I can totally understand the hate for most anime. I'm certainly not a fan of the medium when it takes itself seriously. Shows like Death Note, NGE, and Cowboy BeBop do nothing for me. I do, however, absolutely adore anime when it just lets loose. Namely, slice-of-life schoolgirl comedies. There's this charm about them that I can't get from other shows. There are a few serious anime shows that I do love, but that's due to them being romance stories, which I'm just a weakling for. Especially Toradora. I would watch that if anyone here hasn't.

here is the thing...I need something DIFFERENT to get my attention...Trigun, Helsing, Marcross Plus, GL, of course Bebop...they had something unique to bring to the table...I like the older stuff that originated the ideas, like Mazinger, which I have to say they do an amazing job of reinventing from time to time...or Fist of the North Star.
Not to be that old guy in a rocker...but damn a lot of the new stuff is just rehashing... |
Oh Toradora. I downloaded that series and My Little Pony at the same time.
Guess I made the wrong choice in what to watch first~ |

Oh hey I forgot to mention earlier that I do find ALL Miyazaki films to be shit. It's just my honest opinion of them.

You know, i'm gonna stay out of this thread, or else I'll end up unleashing hell :lol
I just want to say I love anime, that Clannad is my favorite anime of all time, and bid everyone a good day and don't kill eachother :lol |
I do watch anime time to time. But what I would consider a good anime would be a series that when it ends, there's this lingering feeling of an old love that we wish would not go away. I mean it sounds weird but this feeling is hard to elaborate.
I'm usually not a fan of anime that goes above 50eps as it starts to get a drag, from plot A to B to C etc. Some of my favorites being ToraDora, K-On. Both are really light hearted and a nice way to end a day of hard work. Super Robot, hell it must be Gurren Lagann. Full Metal Panic was one of my favourite as well. Currently I'm caught on Kuroko's Basketball. Being a basketball fan myself I'm kinda hook onto it. Just my 2 cents. :) |

I liked Spirited Away. Can't say much for the others.
|
I know, I pretty much figured I'd be ostricized for it but I've never seen a Miyazaki film and actually enjoyed it. They're all quite boring to me. I'm sure there are plenty of people that enjoy those films but they just aren't for me.
|
In fairness, I just remembered that I actually have watched some anime in recent years, just not a lot of it.
I really liked Panty and Stocking because, well, it's crazy. I also watched Queen's Blade for awhile, but that was really only because it was hilariously terrible - and even then, I eventually got bored of laughing at its stupidity and stopped watching. |

Not going to argue either as great or even good though. Just kind of fun. |
Huh. I actually hate those "Crazy and weird" anime. I couldn't stand FLCL, I hated Zetsubou Sensei, and I have no interest in watching Panty and Stocking.

I saw the Transformers parody episode of Panty and Stocking a while back on DVD.It's really well done for what it is.

http://i.imgur.com/fNx9q.jpg Sorry, couldn't resist :p I'm not big on those animes either, but I can't help enjoy a few. FLCL is still one of Gainax's best animes. Speaking of Gainax, Evangelion is the most overrated anime of all that. Not the worst anime I've seen, but definitely one of the few shows that make me want the time I spent watching it back. |
Evangelion is not a good series. I gave up on it twice, I think I just read the ending on Wikipedia or something.
Far, FAR too many anime get labeled as "Good" and "Amazing" because it has trippy or unique visuals. Akira is considered a landmark anime, despite it being f*cking stupid, just because the end when Tetsuo mutates the visuals go on an acid trip. |
