Kamen Rider Gavv Episode 12- "A Bond Connected By Doughnuts!" Discussion
Hanto presses Gavv to reveal his true identity.
|
Oh boy, looks like it's very likely that Shoma is the Granute who took away Hanto's mom...
And the Stomach siblings are revealed to have a full body Kaijin form, as the Twins will be revealing theirs in next week's episode. |
Hanto/KR Valen doesn't like the fact that his real identity has been revealed in front of Shouma/KR Gavv. And Shouma/KR Gavv calls Hanto/KR Valen by his human name, so he gave away the clue that he's already known Hanto/KR Valen. So, Hanto/KR Valen simply asks Shouma/KR Gavv to reveal his identity in front of him because he thinks it's not fair that he was the only one whose identity is revealed. Yep, it's that simple. No need for probing. No need for questioning. No need for deduction. No need for reasoning.
Some people commented that Hanto's identity as KR Valen was revealed too earlier in episode 11, but I don't think that that's the case. Hanto's identity as KR Valen (and Shouma's identity as KR Gavv) is revealed too late in episodes 11 & 12, where they should've already been able to connect the dots and guess each other's identity in episode 10 like I elaborated here where it was clearly shown that both KR Gavv and KR Valen possessed the crucial piece of information that they shouldn't have possessed unless they're Shouma and Hanto. Shouma has just realized that Hanto isn't a Granute but a human because his stomach doesn't look like a Granute's @ 04:33. Seriously, Shouma? How dense are you? You've just realized that Hanto/KR Valen isn't a Granute now only when you have the chance to actually see his belly? You should've already realized it since the very first time you encountered KR Valen like I elaborated in the episode 7 thread here. Granutes = Humanoid otherworldly creatures with a mouth on their stomach called a Gavv which allows them to put on infinite number of human disguises. No Gavv = Not a Granute = Human. The reasoning is very simple, yet it takes Shouma 5 episodes and an actual look at Hanto's belly to arrive at that obvious conclusion. And the fact that Shouma, the sole creator of Gochizous, hasn't even asked where Hanto/KR Valen gets his Gochizous from makes Shouma look even dumber. Hanto tells Shouma his sob story about his mom being kidnapped by a mysterious, elusive Wolf(?) Granute 18 years ago @ 08:49. He shows Shouma the photo of his kid self with his mom. Aaannnddd... Shouma is suddenly experiencing a painful flashback of an unknown memory. In the episode 3 thread here I pointed out that the mysterious Wolf Granute was shown to have a red Gavv in Kid Hanto's drawing. In the episode 6 thread here I hypothesized that the mysterious Wolf Granute was actually Kid Shouma, though it's weird that Kid Shouma's Granute form looked like an adult one. This hypothesis still has several other logical gaps, such as why the Wolf Granute acted like a wild/feral animal, why it had exposed mouth (unlike other Granutes), and how the Wolf Granute was able to enter the human world in the first place. If the elusive Wolf Granute was indeed Kid Shouma, this could be a strong sign that Shouma and Hanto will have a big conflict in later episodes, likely starting in episode 20-25. Perhaps Dente was the one who manipulated Shouma's memories to cover up the mess he created when his failed experiment on Shouma's red Gavv caused Shouma to go berserk and assume his Wolf Granute form who kidnapped Hanto's mom. This type of fuzzy memories/manipulated memories trope (often abused to create cheap, lazy twists) is a typical sign of Yuuyaism, so yes, I think Gavv's writers are trying to out-Yuuya Yuuya Takahashi, haha. This subplot is similar to the one in (God forbid) Geats where the second Rider (Keiwa Sadboi) had a problem with the main Rider (Ace) because Keiwa Sadboi's family was indirectly killed by Ace's mom who was turned into the Goddess of Creation. Sachika is having a slumber party with Emi and Hana at Emi's apartment, haha. An unknown, desperate junkie Granute is trying to steal a box of Dark Snacks and is promptly restrained by 2 agents. He's then brought in front of Lango and Glotta @ 14:25 to be recruited as a new part-timer. It seems like Lango is planning to recruit junkie Granutes, thugs, and other desperate criminals as an aggressive measure to increase the procurement of the Hito Presses. Perhaps junkie thugs are what Lango meant by competence when he stated earlier that he'll recruit more competent part-timers. Kenzou is doing a checkup on Hanto's body. He's wondering if the fast recovery rate is due to Granute organ that he transplanted into Hanto's body in episode 6. In the episode 7 thread here I hypothesized that the ultimate negative side effect of the organ transplantation will likely mutate Hanto's human DNA into a Granute's DNA, like what happened in District 9 (2009) when the human protagonist is slowly mutating into an alien creature after accidentally getting sprayed with fuel for alien ships, which actually contains alien DNA. If my hypothesis is correct, then it'd be very ironic because Hanto's grudge toward Granutes will cause him to be transformed into a Granute. His hate will basically transform him into the very thing he hates. If so, then maybe he needs to read some Nietzsche, haha. "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster." Hanto is also dumb because he goes straight to the friendly ally trope with Shouma. He doesn't bother to question what kind of Driver that Shouma's using, or at least trying to take a simple look at it, let alone asking other more crucial questions like who is backing Shouma and where does he get his Gochizous from. If he's trying to take a look at Shouma's Henshin Belt Gavv, then he'll immediately find that it's unremovable from Shouma's body, which gives a strong hint that Shouma is not a pure human. I think Hanto is deliberately written to be dumb like like this to make him think of Shouma as a human for several episodes like hinted in this episode, so that when he actually finds out that Shouma is a human-Granute hybrid, or worse, a human-Granute hybrid whose Granute form (Wolf Granute) was actually the one who kidnapped his mom 18 years ago like I elaborated above he'll likely snap, betray Shouma, and turn into a dark Rider like Keiwa Sadboi, haha. I really hope I'm wrong on this one. In the scene @ 21:22, Shita and Jeebh are visited by Lango's agents who are bringing the news that they're no longer employees of Stomach corporation. They're then tossed out of the base camp by the agents. They blame their downfall on the red Gavv aka Shouma and vow to take revenge on him. I've just realized there's a big logical anomaly that I've overlooked. If Shouma and his mom were house arrested by Bouche inside his mansion ever since he was born, then how could he know the details of the Dark Snack production? How does he know crucial details like the Hito Press procurement process, the fact that humans will die if their Hito Presses are broken, etc? Who told him those detailed pieces of information? Bouche? It unlikely, because he wanted to kept Shouma and his mom away from anything regarding Dark Snacks. Lango and the other Stomach siblings? They've been despising Shouma and his mom since the beginning, so it's very unlikely that they were the ones who told Shouma. Mother Stomach? It's even more unlikely since she's never proven to be still alive. Then the only remaining likely candidate is Dente. If Dente was indeed the person who spilled the crucial secrets about Dark Snacks to Shouma, then what's the motivation? Don't know! Next week: The debut appearance of Shita's and Jeebh's Granute forms, which look like wolves. I think they will get their asses kicked by KR Gav and or KR Valen, haha. Also the debut of KR Gavv Bushel form. KR Gavv Caking form will likely debut around Christmas or New Year in episodes 16-18. Episodes 16-17 are more likely because New Year's episode 18 are usually reserved for the new Rider's debut. Or maybe KR Gavv Caking form will debut earlier in episodes 14-15 due to the tight schedule. |

Well, the time of double riders not knowing each other's identities is over. It was fun, but it’s good that they didn’t drag it out. It also appears that the theory that Shouma is the culprit behind Hanto's mother's disappearance is true. Oh, I feel like this will lead to a lot of quarrels and tears. But also: a wolf as the kaijin form of a rider with the surname Inoui is too bold a reference to a very popular show.Although, drawing analogies, perhaps Shouma is not guilty, but simply tried unsuccessfully to help and in full memory, somewhere off to the side, Lango grins evilly.
Sachika lured Niwa, doing all the basic search work and leaving the guys only to fight. Considering Hanto's words, is it possible that the truth will be revealed to her or will she continue to be used in secret? Shouma's cross-dressing are a clear influence of long work on Sentai. He took so much effort that he even painted his nails. Although he could have simply chosen closed shoes. The way Valen created the chocolate chip is cool, but the star of the show is his donut shape. It was funny and absurd, especially with putting donuts on the crocodile. Also am I the only one who thinks Gurukan is used too much? Lango and Glotta decided to put pressure on Shouma’s mental. I wonder how exactly? The new part-time workers will definitely make Gavv and Valen sweat. Sheeta and Jeeb also went on the warpath. I feel a separation awaits the twins, and a much more terrible and prolonged one. I wonder which of them will die first? In the next episode there is a new Bushel form. It doesn't look very good, but I'm sure the functionality will be cool. |

Hmm. I really get the feeling that Shouma might be the Wolf Granute that Hanto is looking for and that because his half-human DNA can't control his monster form, he was given the red Gavv to suppress it. And it's possible the reason his mom didn't want him to eat Dark Treats, the reason his dad locked him away and the reason his siblings tried to kill him is because of this. Maybe eating Dark Treats alsp triggers this transformation.
Just my crackpot theory. |

Oh no they're gonna pull a Faiz. And it's even a wolf monster too, WTF :lol
This got me good because at first I was like "Oh look they're bonding now, that’s precious. Oh hey yeah right, they both lost their mom! Forgot about that. Wait why do you have a headache right now Shoma? Noooo!" :lol Well this revelation will suck in the future. That will actually be hard to watch. Anyway, fun action sequence! I didn’t actually look forward to the donut form much, I saw a picture of it featured on the cover of a magazine and didn’t like the look. In the show it works well though, I got accustomed to the design quickly and them basically treating donuts like bouncy tires is kind of Looney Tunes-levels of silliness but I’m all in favor of that. Also, the way the monster was immobilized is 100% a Dragonball reference. Neat! Gavv is still a super fun show, I love it! |

Off topic, the granute that was dragged to Stomach was voiced by Kohei Shoji aka Kiramai Silver's actor apparently. If true, then this makes it another Faiz reference, specifically the Crab Orphnoch who was voiced by Satoshi Matsuda aka Ren/Knight in Ryuki. |
So let me get this straight. Stomach Inc sells Dark Treats, which are addictive. Then they forcibly recruit people who've grown dependant on Dark Treats and promises more if they do Stomach Inc's work.
Bruh, this is just a pyramid scheme. Also, with all this talk of marriage and whatnot, along with a caste structure and visual aesthetic that looks like its been ripped out of an old Victorian-era novel, the Granute World is starting to remind me of those trashy fantasy romance manhwas I love to read. |
Also, Shouma is definitely the Granute who killed Hanto's mom. We don't actually know when the Hitopress method was created; Suga said that the Hitopress method was created recently, but I think we know better than to trust anything the guy says at face value.

New mystery, something suspicious regarding the main character now.
So Shoma finally reveals his identity because of him blurting out Karakida when seeing Valen's human form thus he's forced by Valen to do so. Although Shoma and Hanto seem to be growing closer, using each other's given names, there's still a potential tension as Shoma realizes that, to Hanto, he appears to be just another modified human like himself. Hanto also expresses frustration towards Shoma for focusing on him instead of defeating Granute Early, though he later apologizes for his outburst. This section reveals that Hanto doesn't value his own life due to his numerous losses. In contrast, Shoma values life and this is why he protects others, including Hanto. I wonder if this suggests that Shoma is a hero who doesn't condone recklessness or sacrificial methods. Shoma experiences headaches whenever he hears about Hanto's mother, Sae, being eaten by Granute. There is a theory suggesting that Shoma himself was the Granute that consumed Sae. This reminds me of Joker Undead pre-Hajime. I'm not sure if Gavv would even be able to defeat Granute Early if he followed Valen's wishes. Valen wants all Granutes to be exterminated, but that doesn't guarantee Gavv's success. Unless Guruchan can solo Granute Early. Zakuzakuchips’ swords can be strengthened with Valen's chocolate, but I was expecting more in Valen filling the bowl with a substantial amount of chocolate, thinking of something like Geats filling up the tank with water to blow away the Jamato hordes. The compressed humans not remembering any moments from when they were compressed might potentially have Emi never learn about being scammed, though turns out she did, and for this case, Sachika tolerating the Riders is utilized like Hanto in ep. 5, to help more people understand that they're not monsters. Though likely Emi wouldn't be targeted anymore after this because she's no longer happy and has become fearful of further attacks. No longer a premium ingredient. And yes, Granute Early tries to scam other people now, using alternative accounts like "Getaro", like real life scammers. Sachika continues her role as an informant, working tirelessly through the night to identify Granute Early's alternate accounts, though it's a trial and error case. Her efforts highlight her dedication to helping others, Emi and Hana in this case. More, and unexpected, similarity to Philip, Shoma too even crossdresses to bait the Granute Early from Sachika's information. After meeting Gavv, Lango realizes why Jeebh and Shita failed in their mission; Gavv's physical strength exceeds Lango's expectations. Despite this, Jeebh and Shita are still expelled from the hideout they created, as they are no longer part of the company. They're portrayed more sympathetically, especially in the moment when their hands are forcibly pulled apart. However, they still lack positive traits, apart from their love for each other, and they continue to deflect blame onto Gavv. |

Valen pointing a camera at a fight scene with Gavv like he's me looking for a screencap to use every week was unexpectedly relatable. What was no less relatable, but much more expected, was the strong human drama in this one, which was especially suited to Kamihoriuchi's talents as a director. Not that I think that big two-hander scene with Shouma and Hanto would've suddenly turned out bad under anyone else, but there's an atmosphere to it that I definitely suspect is his doing, and that enhances the strong performances of the two actors, who are reading dialogue from an extremely strong script to begin with. There's so much fantastic emotion from both characters all through that conversation, both really having their respective paths in life reflected in the things they're each saying, and it all makes me as happy to have this new version of the status quo as I was to have the old one. The show also pulls that slick little trick of exposing Shouma's identity as a Kamen Rider to Hanto, but pointedly saving for later the revelation that he's a Granute with a direct blood relation to the main bad guys. For one thing, it immediately reassures the viewer that it isn't like they just resolved the relationship between these two before even hitting the halfway mark, and that's nice. Just in the moment though, the way that hesitation is itself important characterization for Shouma, how he still feels that fear and maybe even some shame and all that, it makes the episode a lot richer emotionally. It's very happy in that Shouma and Hanto utlimately only become closer now that they share each other's secret, but there's that sadness underneath that Shouma still can't feel comfortable sharing himself completely. It's just kind of a great episode all around, really? I loved Sachika here, too, for example. She's basically at least as much of a powerhouse as the actual Riders, even if her form changes don't come with potato swords or chocolate guns. In the information age, being *that* adept with social media is frankly as impressive as any amount of fighting, and probably much more useful on a day-to-day basis. Hanto is very smart to rely on her help with that kind of stuff. Needless to say at this point, the action didn't disappoint either. Gavv rides his bike again, they made sure to do the eye thing for the first big double transformation, the chocolate-coated swords were a perfectly Gavv kinda way to highlight the teamwork going on... heck, despite the wildly different context, Shouma gets a dou suru in there, so even that (kinda) checks out! Again, really hard episode to go wrong with! |
I have several new hypotheses:
- Dente was likely working with another organization (which I label Organization #0) in the Granute world under some kind of joint technological development when he was developing the Hito Press process and other technologies involving the Gavv such as the agent creation system and the human disguise system, which means that the cooperation was known and approved by Bouche. - Hierarchy-wise, Organization #0 might be equal to Stomach, slightly higher (where their financial/resource contribution to the development was higher than Stomach's), or much higher (where they acted as the main donor to Stomach, like Foundation X that acted as the main donor/financier to the Museum in KR W, the Kougami Foundation in KR OOO, and the OSTO in KR Fourze) like I hypothesized in the episode 6 thread here. - Organization #0 later ended their cooperation with Stomach due to one or several unknown reasons, likely due to having a different vision for the usage of the Hito Press process and the other technologies. - There's also another possibility that Organization #0 didn't end their cooperation with Stomach, but simply expand their operation by working with other organization(s) and or creating shell companies/organizations. - Organization #0 then likely formed a cooperation with the Granute police department or law enforcement (which I label Organization #1), very likely without Bouche's knowledge/approval, under the guise of helping them crack down the Dark Snack distribution, while having an ulterior motive of pitting Stomach against the Granute police department for their own benefit. - If Organization #0 is indeed higher in hierarchy than Stomach, then they definitely have the ability to control the flow of information, especially the data from Dente's experiment on Kid Shouma. Organization #0 only allowed certain basic information from that experiment to be accessed by Stomach, and there were/are crucial pieces of information from that experiment that were completely restricted from Stomach that even Bouche couldn't access. It's very likely that Organization #0 was also the one who ordered Dente to erase/manipulate Kid Shouma's memories. - Stomach's limited access to information was likely hinted in episode 6 @ 12:17 when Nyelv said that according to Dente's documents, his modification on Kid Shouma's red Gavv was considered a failure. I have a hypothesis that it was not actually a failure, but was only reported by Dente (as ordered by Organization #0) as a failure. The very weird thing is, if Bouche was already informed that it was a failure, then why didn't he order Dente to just remove the Henshin Belt Gavv from Kid Shouma's body? What's the point of keeping a failed, non-functional medical device attached on your body, unless the plot needed it? Also, has Kid Shouma ever asked himself (and Bouche and Dente) why he got a hilariously gaudy, conspicuous-looking, failed, non-functional medical device (with a crank lever!) permanently implanted into his digestive system? Don't know! - Dente's experiment, being under control of Organization #0, very likely also hid other pieces of crucial data from Bouche/Stomach, such as biological samples. The most crucial samples from that experiment were also likely hidden to further give the impression of a failed experiment. - One of the most crucial biological samples (and other pieces of information) from that experiment likely ended in Kenzou's hands. The Granute organ that was transplanted by Kenzou into Hanto's body in episode 6 was supplied by Nyelv, but there's also a possibility that it was actually extracted from inside Shouma's body and supplied by Organization #0, like I hypothesized in the episode 10 thread here. On that fateful day, something happened (which could be accidental or non-accidental) during Dente's experiment on Kid Shouma 18 years ago that caused Kid Shouma to go berserk in his Wolf(?) Granute form which made him lose his sense of control (and very likely also sanity) and made him kidnap Hanto's mom. So, ironically, Hanto being transplanted with Kid Shouma/Wolf Granute's internal organ didn't only grant him the power of a Granute, but will also likely gradually mutate him into the Wolf Granute (or a different type of Granute), like I hypothesized in the episode 7 thread here. This was likely why Nyelv's scene in episode 6 @ 12:17 was played right before the scene where Kenzou transplanted the Granute's internal organ into Hanto's body. - Kid Shouma getting his internal organ removed by Dente was likely what made him weak and unable to create agents. But this hypothesis makes no sense, because it was shown in episode 5 @ 08:12 that Bouche requested Dente to modify Shouma's red Gavv to strengthen it and to enable it to create agents. So, Shouma's red Gavv was already weak even before the experiment, and the failed experiment did nothing to fix the problem. There's a solution to this logical hole, though, by making the Granute internal organ an artificial one, not organic, and that artificial organ then transplanted into Kid Shouma's body and made him assume his Wolf Granute form and go berserk. The artificial organ could be the result of Dente's novel, experimental biological/genetic engineering on a normal Granute organ that would grant much greater power to any Granute (and, as proven by Hanto, even to a human), which explains why the Wolf Granute had an exposed mouth with beastly teeth compared to other normal Granutes (including the Bouche, Dente, and the other Stomach family members) who have closed mouth with no visible teeth. The Granute internal organ being an artificial one could also explain how it didn't seem to show any sign of cellular deterioration in 18 years. - Another logical hole in this hypothesis is how the berserk Wolf Granute/Kid Shouma had an adult-sized body and was able to travel to the human world in the first place like I already mentioned in my first post in this thread. Sooo... Mmmmmaaaaayyyyybbbbbeeeee I'm 1000% wrong on this one, haha. - Shouma would likely be forced by situation to eat a Dark Snack which would make him produce a Dark Gavv Gochizo or something in that vein. He'd be defeated in a fight against very strong opponent (Lango?) in the Granute world, and since there are no human foods there, he'll be forced to eat a Dark Snack to regain his power. - The writers could make Sachika an important character by revealing her connection to Organization #0, or more likely, Organization #1. Her father could likely be a detective from Tokyo police department who has been working with undercover cops from Organization #1 (the Granute police department) who are also infiltrating Stomach. - Sachika has been rumored to debut as the third Rider, but I still can't figure out how the plot would allow that, though I think she could likely transform into an extra Rider like KR Poppy later in episodes 25-30. The third Rider would debut after New Year in episodes 18-22 and is very likely from Stomach or Organization #1, where the big bad/Rider from Organization #0 would appear after episode 30 where he reveal himself as the mastermind of the whole conflict. - Regardless of my new hypotheses above, there are also several unanswered questions, such as: When did Dente go MIA? Was it right after he failed to fix Shouma's weak red Gavv 18 years ago? Why did Stomach let Dente, the most brilliant scientist there, go MIA for almost 2 decades? Why did they seem to do nothing to prevent Dente from deserting his post? It makes no sense at all for a big corporation to just let their most most brilliant, important scientist go MIA and did nothing to prevent it nor respond to it. Quote:

After freight training episodes 4-11, I realized I love this series storytelling thus far, but these suits are to me, just ATROCIOUS. I can’t stand these fugly silly suits, even though they fit the theme perfectly well.

I actually wanted to wait until halfway through the show to talk about costumes, but now that we're on the subject. I don't find them visually outstanding. Gavv's shapes don't implement the ridiculous concept of cool like Gaim, and they're not as recognizable and unique as Ex-Aid. That is, you can easily draw a fan rider in the style of Ex-Aid and everyone will unmistakably understand that this is a rider from Ex-Aid. But with Gavv this is very problematic.
Its forms are united by a unique food theme rather than a style of execution. Even such a thing as a belt in the shape of a big red mouth in the show itself turns out to be extremely inconspicuous and is only noticed when attention is deliberately focused on it. But even if the forms of Gavv do not please my eye, this drawback is completely outweighed by their technicality. Crushing armor, fragile swords, springy marshmallows and much, much more. The attention to detail and how they work is simply amazing. I think that instead of going by the principle: “How can we make the audience fall in love with a ridiculous concept?” The creators of this show took the path: “How can we extract maximum potential from a ridiculous concept?” And this is actually part of their already repeatedly mentioned respect and understanding of the essence of Kamen Rider. After all, it may not be obvious after 53 years, but a grasshopper-themed superhero is also quite ridiculous. But, despite this, it works great and has surpassed many, at first glance, much more promising ideas. |

It's possible that Bouche was made to die unnaturally by the Stomach siblings, but what's the reason for them wanting Dente to die? Did Dente have problems with the Stomach siblings? After all, he was (and probably is) Stomach's best scientist. Why would they attempt to kill Dente? Dente being MIA for 2 decades to live as a dysfunctional, poor addict in the human world without being searched by Stomach corporation, Bouche and or the Stomach siblings is one of the gazillion of logical anomalies in this story.
