10 years later: Do y'all still hate Ghost?
 

I wasn't in the fandom in 2015 but I've seen alot of the old Ghost hate posts.

For myself, I can say that I never hated Ghost. Moreover, Akari is my favorite heroine in the franchise. Well, in general, I would say that the hate for the show has clearly died down, someone has even revised their views, but some haters still remain. Plus, there are those who perceive "Ghost is bad" as an axiom that does not require verification.

I didn't watch it when it was airing, but I do consider it bad. But hate? That's too strong a word. I do see how watching it weekly would have magnified its negative elements though, so I can certainly understand why there was such a whirlwind of complaints about it when it was new.

I have yet to give it a full run-through but I can definitely say my outlook on it has softened considerably. It's still a very flawed show, but I very much see the appeal of it now.

I'll get around to it, I'm sure.

I think Ghost benefits greatly nowadays due to people being able to watch it as a more stand-alone series.

I think it's important to consider when and how Ghost first aired.

Ghost had the misfortune of airing right after two well received series, with both series being pretty up-front about the plot from the start.

Gaim: Advertising for the show stated that Gaim would be the "strongest Rider" (up for debate) with an emphasis on the multiple-Rider/Rider War element. There were mixed feelings at first amongst most fans given that it starts off a bit light-hearted, but later on it brings a lot of twists that raise the stakes for the show.

Drive: Had a bit of a difficult time starting out given the sheer success and popularity of Gaim. The show was also advertised as just Shinnosuke hunting down Roidmudes as part of a Police unit. Drive's writing was clever in a retroactive way as it didn't try to copy Gaim's means of success, but managed to still be engaging and provide twists late into the show in it's own style.

Ghost: Ghost had a troubled start to say the least. The advertising for the show seemed to put emphasis on the "spooky" and historical aspects, with Ghost acting rather spookily in the last two Drive episodes as a really interesting introduction to the Ghost series.

Flash forward to Ghost's airing, and it the tone ended up being wildly different compared to what most envisioned by that point. Most waited it out to see if it would pull a Gaim/Drive situation and improve later in the shows runtime, but it never pulled off the same kinds of appealing twists that Gaim and Drive managed to do.

Personally, Ghost is among my personal favorite Rider Designs and Gimmicks and the idea of combining historical figures with a ghost gimmick is still one of the single coolest ideas I've seen in Toku. That being said, the story isn't too bad, but again, it ended up being pretty different compared to what was previously advertised and unlike Gaim and Drive, who's initial plots are relevant for the majority of the show, but Ghost's plot drops out of relevancy pretty early on.

I recall a lot of rumors/words going around that there was a negative reaction among parents for Ghost's cameo in the Drive movie, but I have never seen evidence to support that claim. I do something changed behind the scenes, as the original plot for Ghost at the press conference mentioned that he would be traveling around the world in search of the Eyecons and learn what it meant to be hero from figures in history. Given that there is no "global search" and that he is already pretty heroic and never gets directly told "how to be a hero" it's pretty safe to say that somewhere along the lines changes were made. Also, as a minor spoiler, there are elements in the two-parter Drive episodes that never show up in Ghost's show, such as Ghost acting a bit off compared to his show (listening to Shinnosuke on the phone, fighting while invisible, arguing with Yurusen), the Gamma working with humans, and Eyecons having some sort of mystical power on their own (Newton's eyecon is shown as having some sort of wishing/reality warping ability). Again, these episodes aired right before Ghost's own show aired, which seems to indicate some sort of change in the approach for how the elements in Ghost's show would function

Does this mean that Ghost as a show is objectively awful? No, it's up for debate. But to understand why there was such an initial negative reaction it's important to ascertain the context at the time.

Not as viscerally, no. Honestly, I tend to not think about it at all.

Onari is still the worst character in the history of Kamen Rider, though.

I hated Ghost so much that it made me look closer at Kamen Rider storytelling, which made me love Kamen Rider storytelling more, which made me love Ghost.

Personally,Ghost and Gotchard are the two WORST Kamen Rider shows overall, Ghost is watchable ONCE, then you realize you wasted your time, Gotchard, I couldn’t make it past 4 episodes it’s SO TERRIBLE, even Sky Rider was more engaging and enjoyable, and Sky Rider was (makes gagging noises) pretty bad.
Ghost was below par for sure. No Covid excuse for production, just bad writing

I don't hate Ghost, but I don't like it, either. It's paced so poorly, it's story so uninteresting, and it's humor wasn't one that vibed with me.

It's subpar, lacking in nearly every regard to other Heisei phase 2 series.

I enjoyed Ghost, so I never really did hate it.

In fact, I got someone into Kamen Rider by showing them Ghost and well I consider that a win against any hate for it tbh.

I think my big complaint about Ghost is that it was just throwing too many ideas at the wall to see what stuck, which meant it had a lot of ideas I actually liked but they didn't get used enough (historical trivia, humans summoning Ganma, Takeru living on borrowed time, ghosts being invisible to humans, Saionji's creepy vibe, Takeru actually talking to the parka ghosts, Alain's whole character arc, most of Takeru's supporting cast TBH) and a lot of other ideas that just seemed random and pointless (the iguana mech, the Ganma losing their mystique and getting reduced to generic invaders-from-another-world, the Makoto clones, everything involving the Gammaizers, whatever scifi stuff Igor was doing, a lot of their super forms that had cool concepts but were just kinda shoved in without feeling earned)

As somebody that had watched and finished Ghost sometime ago, the show itself is just okay for the most part. While it’s definitely not one of the best seasons in all of Kamen Rider, it’s not one of the worst either. I liked this series much better than Kiva and Faiz though and that there are some legitimately good moments to be had with the show.

I never really followed the show come to think of it but loved the fact that they cast Kazuhiko Nishimura aka Mr. Yellow Lion (from the greatest and last Showa sentai show Chojyu Sentai Liveman) as the titular hero's dad.
