Seeing this title likely brings back fond memories for many. ‘Space Cop Gavan’ (1982-1983) was a hugely popular series depicting the exploits of a hero battling a space crime syndicate to protect Earth. In the 80s, this legendary work captivated fans not only in Japan but worldwide with the striking impression made by its hero in his metallic suit. It is a completely new “Gavan” built from scratch using the latest visual effects and production techniques. The “future predictions” people held in the 80s—AI, space exploration, space ventures—are now reality. Precisely because of today's remarkable technological advances, the visual expression and realistically resonant story construction make the birth of the reborn Gavan possible. His metallic body glows red... The stylish visuals are unveiled at top speed! Furthermore, as the first installment of the series centered around the theme of “Red Hero” championed by [PROJECT R.E.D.], the protagonist hero: Gavan Infinity also sports a metallic red combat suit! Anticipation is already building for the full reveal to come. ‘Super Space Cop Gavan Infinity’ depicts the stylish exploits of a red hero using cutting-edge technology. Details on intriguing characters and the story will be announced later, so stay tuned for further updates. |
Huh, I wonder if "Project R.E.D." is the Japanese term for the "Universe Heroes" thing that has been going around? I kind of wish the concept for this series wasn't "red heroes" to be honest though, I always liked the fact main Kamen Riders could be any color. It almost sounds like the new series will be some kind of Shared Toei Hero Universe judging by their emphasis on crossovers with "upcoming broadcasts" (later entries in the Project R.E.D. series?). Regardless, they're definitely billing this as a full on Sentai successor, to the point that maybe some of the later shows in the series will just be new Sentai seasons.
I think I am actually even more confused about what is going on now than when there were just rumors flying around. Well, I hope it turns out well! |
I understand that Project Red is a new franchise, which Super Sentai was retroactively made a part of, since their main characters also wear red (Zenkaiger felt even more out of place than before). And that's probably why Gavan was chosen as the hero, since he has a similar story. The Space Sheriffs franchise existed before the name Metal Heroes was officially introduced. So, in a sense, history is repeating itself.
Regarding the glowing red body, I understand that Gavan's updated, familiar design will be supplemented with glowing red stripes, like Zeztz's base form. Ultimately, Toei doesn't want him confused with Sharivan. So, now I'm tormented by another thought: when will a modern version of Zubat appear in Project Red? Especially since he's already red. |
Introducing Red Gavan!
|
Thank god we can finally kill those obnoxious rebrand rumors. The announcement makes it clear this is a brand new franchise which has the potential to crossover with other Toei franchises.
Also, I can't help but laugh at just making Gavan red because of his name recognition when we already have a red Space Sheriff. |
Looking forward to this and the unrelated MKP project by Uchusen magazine, Masaru Yamashita, and Koichi Nakayama as well. Metal Heroes are back, BABYYYYYYY.
All I need now is a next-gen mechanical dragon with a UFO attached to it. :lolol |

a red Gavan? but... we already have Sharivan!
|
See you've already showcased the issue here.
That guy's name is Sharivan. But this guy right here? He's Gavan and he's red. There's a key difference. |

Huh, interesting. So basically, they're just expanding the scope of the Super Sentai series from a team of color-coded heroes with a giant robot to a red hero within whatever context they want to do that time around. So we might get more Sentai-esque teams in the future, but this allows more flexibility. Sounds promising.

I know I already said this but the more I think about this the more it bothers me that this new series is all about red heroes. Sentai is ending, we have an opportunity for a clear break to move away from some of its restrictions, and we make a series about obligate red protagonists again. I don't even mind that they made Gavan red when Sharivan is right there, I'm just want visual variety.

The new brand name is certainly honest, nobody will complain about the Red getting too much focus when that's the whole premise here, but the downside is that it only appeals to fans of the color red. Toei are basically saying, "If you happen to prefer blue, green, or some other color, then screw you!" Quote:
Congrats on your 7777th post! Quote:

You know what? I'll give this a shot, which is probably not something I'd say about another Sentai.
|
Not that I'm complaining, but the chest armor gave me Akiba Red vibes for a brief moment. :lolol
|
So the rebranding rumors were true. I guess they're combining Sentai with Metal Heroes.

Then again did we have some bangers recently. DonBros and KingOhger are so freakin' good, modern genre classics for sure. So what I'm saying is - Sentai was perfectly able to be different and unique nowadays, but the title itself holds it back. So something new for a change might help. Although the irony of it being Gavan of all names, the project that was Toei's big make-or-break Hail Mary pass in the past, is not lost on me. |
" In 2026, a new special effects hero series, PROJECT RED, will launch within the Super Sentai series, a beloved franchise that has been running for 50 years since 1975. Named after the English translation of "Cho Jigen Eiyuu Tan," PROJECT RED is a new special effects video series featuring a "red hero. " The series is planned
to develop in many different ways , including crossovers with various upcoming works , adding depth to each of their respective worlds. The 50-year history will reach new heights. In 2026, you will be the witness to a new legend." This definitely sounds like a re-branding of sorts. Super Sentai isn't canceled but is being expanded upon under a new project connecting Sentai with Metal Heroes. I figure they'll be cycling Sentai and Metal Hero productions in and out every year or so. |
So if I'm understanding right Red Gavan is going to headline a new shared tokusatsu universe which will slowly introduce new heroes or properties over time (maybe possibly based off of other Metal Heroes or new takes on Sentai).

Metal Heroes already borrowed extensively from other franchises. The Space Sheriff trilogy borrowed elements from Kamen Rider, Metalder is a loose remake of Kikaider, and later Metal Heroes like the Rescue Hero trilogy are basically Super Sentai. Project RED sounds closer to a spiritual successor to Metal Heroes. Besides, if Sentai were to return, then Toei wouldn't be able to market this internationally at all. |

(Read: I have a multi-media exhibition prepared and if that fails, I'm gonna start hitting people with chairs) |
So it's not Sentai, but it's still Sentai.
Not that there's anything wrong with that |
I hope RED still has ED themes and dances. Either that, or let Rider do them instead, like Saber.

I wonder if the White Witch character will take cues from Majade.
|
I guess clarification makes it clear that Super Sentai is officially done and is not affiliated with Project R.E.D.
My take on this is Toei is likely putting the brand on ice to let Hasbro either succeed or fail with their Power Rangers reboot before deciding to do anything again with Sentai. If the reboot succeeds then Project R.E.D. will serve as a competitor to Power Rangers. If it fails then Toei can scoop up the Power Rangers IP for cheap and resume Sentai and Power Rangers under a single umbrella. |

I've been meaning to yap about this when I saw the news, but now that I have some time and we now official confirmation that Super Sentai is ending (I will miss it), let's get into it!
So, Gavan's back as the star of this new series, which is neat (I still need to finish the original one), but now in red! Strange, I thought we already had a Red Space Sheriff... On the subject of the name "Project Records. (of) Extraordinary. Dimensions" definitely sounds like a nice broad layout for a series, like people have pointed out on the "rebranding" rumor. First, like I said when Zeztz was revealed, it kind of seems like they're trying to create a "standard" for their shows, with Kamen Rider falling into the Grasshopper aesthetic every now and again, like Ultraman, and Red being the main color of every Sentai Protagonist (except maybe Zenkaizer) AND many of Toei's old superheroes, this seems like an interesting direction to take things. Though I do wonder if that means we won't get any more Red Riders (doubt it but still funny to think about)? Second, depending on how Gavan Infinity turns out, seeing revivals of old Toei Superheroes would be neat (given how the name sounds like that might be the case)! Kyodain, Zubat, Akumaizer 3, Kikaider... Or just plain "new" Red Heroes going forward. Though I feel like they'll stick with revivals to test the waters to create a formula that can coexist with Rider, which depending on the series could contest with Project R.E.D. so I do wonder how things will play out. And while I've already said in the Sentai Ending thread, I will miss it, but I also understand that this was probably inevitable. I still kind of doubt Power Rangers was a big reason, since they probably prioritize its domestic earnings more like they do with Rider, but if Power Rangers does manage to fill the void Sentai leaves behind that'd be neat. But at least we can probably get Sentai Specials on TTFC (which I don't think I've watched any of the specials they've been putting on there), so it will be nice to see some returning faces. But for now, I'm looking forward to seeing what Project R.E.D. has in store as Sentai's heir to the Super Hero mantle. |
I'd be SHOCKED if Red Gavan is the only henshin hero in this

But I also think Power Rangers had an influence on Toei's new concept. After all, for some reason the new franchise is called Project Red, not Red Hero. This means they'll use the same abbreviation, PR. On the other hand, it rejects the idea of Hasbro's rights to the franchise. After all, just using PR instead of the full name even once is grounds for a lawsuit. Even if it's unwinnable, it didn't stop Hasbro from suing DC over Bumblebee's nickname. It might seem like I'm arguing with myself here, so I'll summarize. My opinion: Toei took the Power Rangers into account when creating Project Red. But only as a concept, not as a competitor or a threat to their plans. |
i'm back yesturday was my birthday.
