More women/girls deserving to be riders
Seeing how Reiwa progressed the female riders so far, wonder if Heisei's will ever get any good treatment? Mostly with Jeanne & Aguilera. Geats' females will hopefully be better too.
For the Heisei era, how do you all see some females deserving to be riders? We have....
I would see Miitan turn into a rider with a Build Driver and Medic as one with a Mach Driver. Misora could go Best Match with a purified version of the CD Fullbottle, but will need something organic to add with. |
I voted for the Medic, because after the special about the Brain, she should get a belt too.

It's annoying how every Reiwa heroine became a Rider except Mei, the one I actually wanted. I hope Neon/Naago will change that.
Mana had the power of an Agito, so she could've become a Rider. Yuka was an Orphenoch, so she could've become a Rider, she might've made a good Delta. I also thought Rinko and Mai had potential. |
Abso-freaking-lutely should've been Kiriko from Drive. You can tell she wanted to be one. And literally everyone important in her life is one. Her brother, her hero & her love interest are all Riders. She's the only other combatant on the team & the most she got were special bullets & boots that make her kicks really strong. Is that bad? No. She's still a great character regardless. But she should've been a Rider, hands down.

Misora and Sawa I always wanted to be Riders. Build was a series where all the main cast got to be superheroes so it was pretty noticeable to me how the girls got left out

I feel like the obvious answer is Akira from Hibiki. She was Ibuki’s apprentice and was all set up to become an Oni before the production staff changed and she was encouraged to quit because girl.

I like Beast, but Mayu should have been Wizard's second rider.
Would have liked to have seen more transformed scenes with Yuri and Megumi in Kiva as well. |
Misora's probably one of the less physically active Rider females (CMIIW), but I'd think it's a bit of a waste to not take advantage of Kaho Takada's acrobatics to not make her a Rider.

I know we're talking about Heisei riders, but I think a noteworthy mention is Showa's Electronic Wave Humanoid Tackle. She died halfway through the series which prompted Stronger to undergo surgery for his Charge Up form, which is pretty insulting. To add salt to the wound, there were plans to revive her and make her an actual Kamen Rider, but those plans were scrapped because of Stronger's shorter episode count.
I really REALLY would've liked to see Kamen Rider Tackle. |

A Woman Rider CAN sell, you just have to make her appeal to your majority audience. This is just an advertising problem(the sales$)and a male dominance Japanese thing(cultural idiocy). |
Speaking on that front, I still find it hilarious that Sakura's Driver was relegated to P-Bandai given how... basic it is.
It reeks of them not wanting to sell her toy normally because she's a girl. It would've given some balance to the absurd amount of P-Bandai Toys that dominates Revices toyline. Like every other P-Bandai release? I can get to some extent, the Libera Driver being P-Bandai no matter the reasoning is an absolute cowards move. |

Since we are talking about sales, the main thing here is to find the right audience. For example, Saber didn't catch on in Japan and the US, but was a big hit in China. And, if we recall its zero episode, the conclusion suggests itself that it was created for the Chinese market. Even the knights of Sword of Logos are much more like Armor Heroes than sentai.
Returning to female riders, it is clear that there are three ways to increase sales: 1) An androgynous suit is no different from a man's; 2) Something very girly, like a princess, that can attract fans of magical girls (Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure seem to have no sales problems); 3) Well, a very, very cool belt to make. Just the kind that everyone wants to buy. |

Also I find that popularity thing a bit funny purely because like, she has her own TTFC Special alongside Hana. And like, to push further into that, it's not a prequel like Vail's nor is it a prologue to a movie like Birth of Chimera.
If that doesn't say that Jeanne and Aguilera have popularity as Riders, then I'm not sure what does. But anyway, I'll always go up to bat for Toei doing female Riders because like, it's clear that in recent years they've been getting better. However... if I see something off then I'm going to call them out on it. |

Heck, if you wanted to go there, I would point out a noticeable parallel in the Twosidriver and Libera Driver users -- Daiji and Sakura both placed about as low while Kagerou and Lovekov placed about as high! To say nothing, as well, of how the popularity poll was so hilariously lopsided in favour of Hiromi that it's hard to use it as a gauge of anyone else :lol |
I don't think there's much to argue about. The female characters and female riders in the show can and do be popular. But their toys don't sell well. Partly, this is due to the fact that not all fans are collectors, and the parents of the main audience (that is, 5-year-old boys) are likely to buy them the belt and toys of the main character, or the one with whom the child associates himself. It is unlikely that a five-year-old boy will associate himself with Jeanne, right? That being said, I don't think they're far behind other riders of her caliber when it comes to figurine sales. Well, plush Lovecov should also be taken into account for Jeanne.

I feel like there's also an issue of specifically bringing in Revice's toy sales as a factor of discussion, when the toy line looks like this (shamelessly stolen from reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/KamenRider/...so_far_left/):
https://i.imgur.com/FRpgS4x.jpg Like admittedly we don't have the sales numbers for specific items, but how does anyone at Toei/Bandai determine anything from this image other than "money = big". |

What any manufacturer and toy company knows is that it is always better to: A) manufacturer and sell through a product than it is to B) sit on unsold inventory The P-Bandai style of sales is exactly method A for Bandai. A way to mitigate manufacturing risks, know sales expectations upfront, and determine an actionable budget for other toy lines. When done properly, people can order what they want and Bandai can better understand their own sales. Because if not for the P-Bandai method, the actual alternative is that we don't get a Libera driver at all. Obviously when this is done poorly (stock does not meat demand) you'll have angry customers, but the alternative is worse: B) having unsold inventory forces stores and retailers to heavily discount your goods, which does 2 primary things from a consumer perspective: It lowers the perceived value of your goods, and it leads more potential customers to wait for a sale or discount. Maintaining the value of your products is one of the biggest reasons why coupons and discount codes still exist in modern sales. It allows people to buy your stuff for cheap while thinking the value of the thing is still high. Now, from a retailer perspective, it makes a store less inclined to stock your wares, at the risk of eating shelf space without good (or sometimes negative) return. Bandai has been in the toy industry longer than anyone, this isn't really about ignoring girls- they have entire other franchises created to cater to girls and women. A better indication of demographics is too see who is in the marketing material. Yes, there are a lot of little boys in the adverts and promos, but most of the time, and certainly for P-Bandai products there are no kids or gender neutrality. Also, the timeline and logistics required to launch and distribute a toy to coincide with a show is something very few companies have even come close to getting right- even Disney struggles with this. We are just talking about a historically male franchise, and while that doesn't mean it can't have female riders or a significant amount of female fans, I think the toys will continue to reflect that aspect until we first see a significant shift in the show itself. So far Reiwa is showing a lot of promise and that's awesome. I love female Kamen Riders but honestly I would hate to see their merch and figures warming pegs and sitting in discount bins. |
I don't mean to be intrusive, but I think we've gone too far off the topic of the survey.
I'll try to get the discussion back on that track by saying that I don't really like it when the main lady of the show becomes a rider. Although, perhaps, for the season, where all the characters are riders, it is worth making an exception. |
Does anyone have thoughts on how the other Heisei riders deserve their own female riders?
If Misora and/Sawa became riders, it’d be something. Misora having a purified CD Fullbottle be good. But what organic material would fit with it and Miitan? And based on the poll, Kiriko deserves to be a rider. But what of Medic? |
