Mirror Knight is an update to the classic 1972 series Mirrorman, Glenfire is an update to Fireman of 1973, and Jean-Bot is an update to Jumborg Ace also from 1973. Later on Jean-Killer (Jean-Nine), who becomes Jean-Bots bother, is introduced in the Killer the Beat Star films. He's an homage to Jumborg 9 also from the Jumborg Ace TV series. The same guy while either piloting his cessna or driving his car could transform them into Ace or 9 depending on which one he was in, and pilot them into battle. Very quirky old character with very awesome modern updates.

The two Zero movies kinda reintroduced Ultraman to me.
I remembered as a kid, i would have my mom record Ultraman jack from the TV via VHS because I had to go to school during the time slot - 5pm. after that I never bothered about Ultraman until I saw the Mega Monster Movie featuring Zero. That got me back into Ultraman BIG time and I started looking up and reading the mythology and history. I am now hooked and enjoying every second indulging in the Ultraman series. I have seen Nexus, Mebius, jack, Ace, Taro, Ultraman, seven, powered, jonias and loved them all. Just started Tiga and once that is done, Dyna and Gaia next. In addition, the Ultra act figs are mostly well made. This is an additional bonus for me as a toy collector. Cheers to more Ultraman in the future. |

Downloaded The Adventures Of Ultraman from tokuzilla last night, the US dubbed version of The Ultraman anime. I thought this was a feature length special, but this seemed too short -- trying to find a running length for this movie but with no luck. I guess I will watch it tonight; I think I still have it on VHS from back in the day so I can compare them.
Going to grab Ultraman: The Adventure Begins (AKA Ultraman USA) tonight; this stuff will make good content for the podcast. |
Just got up to Tiga 13. So far the plot itself hasn't gone very far overall, things tend to be rather episodic. But this was a pretty enjoyable out of the ordinary episode. Seeing as Tiga fought in human sized form for the majority of his fight. It was actually kind of odd to see an Ultra down to that size fighting goons for so long. But cool at the same time.
In the back of my head I'm still wondering where Golza went in episode 1 and when he'll appear again. And when will the Killie show back up? For a world that knew nothing of monsters or aliens to suddenly have daily encounters with them, these people are calm as hell :lol |
Zero's Strenght! Dyna's Detemrnination! Cosmos's Heart! Together, the ultimate Ultraman: SAGA!
Let's dive into: -Ultraman Saga- That was different, unlike Legends or Revenge which were large space odysseys, Saga is a smaller story that is more character centric, but it worked nicely. Taiga was a very different host from the other ones I know, but he turned out to be great, he an Zero are quite different so they were a fun duo. Asuka didn't do much honestly, we are told that he's a great guy but without watching Dyna an knowing his backstory he comes across as quite plain, I liked him it's just that I don't know him. Musashi, man Musashi, I loved the guy, he's a very unique Ultra, kind to the core and a pacifist at heart, when I first heard about Cosmos I expected his kindness to be overbearing, but it worked nicely here, he's a cool guy. I felt his pain when Bat blew up the monsters. The supporting cast was ok, not bad, not memorable either. Overall a good movie, it wasn't aming to surpass Revenge or Legends, it simply wanted to tell a good story, and it succeeded. On another note, can anybody tell me if Ultraman Cosmos is fully subbed, it's not listed on the "Other Toku Fansubs" thread, but there are some episodes floating in youtube, and I found links that claim to contain the series fully subbed. So I'm kinda lost right now. |
Though it looks like most of the torrents themselves don't have seeders, it was apparently subbed at one point

I think all you're finding are Hong Kong subs. I have never heard of legit subs for Cosmos, certainly nothing that would have covered the longest of any Ultraman series.

Are Hong Kong subs as bad as they say? |

Anyways those were quite nice, Cosmos fight style is a very interesting and despite Musashi being such a pacifist the episodes managed to keep a nice balance of optimism and realism. Out of three monsters, two saved and one destroyed. Anyways it's probably not worth the time searching for the whole series with this quality of subs, but I'll definitely watch the 5 that I found. |
Up to episode 18 of Tiga! Finally the return of Golza, that didn't last long :lol A decent episode after what seems like a string of unconnected tales. The beginning of the series felt pretty strong but quickly this show becomes generic monster of the week stuff with a few twists. I still find it enjoyable but there's no real overarching plot to be perfectly honest.
Tiga is just Tiga so far, though I know he has a more elaborate past. But since episode 2 maybe no more connections have been made between Daigo and Tiga really. And the endless of amounts of throwaway aliens and enemies that are just invading Earth for the sake of it are getting old. I'd prefer to have one group of aliens continuously trying to take over or destroy the earth than 50 unrelated ones. The interesting villains seems to come around briefly and haven't reappeared yet. The only ones that have been in 2 episodes so far are the Critters, which were just awful, and Golza who went down fairly easily. The show isn't really piquing my interest but it can be entertaining at times. I hope Dyna is better. |
I get to eat my words just a little bit. Episodes 19 & 20 are a 2-parter involving and invading robot army. There's a little bit of exploration of Daigo and Tiga's connection though not much of one. And there're implications about the Maxima Overdrive and it's connection to light, possibly the light of Ultras. It's a decent 2-parter but it had no long lasting effects that I can see. The invading army wasn't even aware of who sent them. I just wish the villains were more connected in this series.

Found my old VHS tape with Adventures of Ultraman on it. Can't wait to sit down with this one again! (As a bonus, it also has two volumes of Masters Of The Universe on it, plus Yogi's All-Star Christmas Caper, and a few other kids shows!)
Unfortunately, having trouble finding a working DL for The Adventure Begins. BUT! It is on Youtube, so there is always that route for viewing it, if not possessing it. |
As I continue to plod through Tiga I find that a huge chunk of episodes from 21 to 35 can be skimmed pretty quickly. There's literally zero plot in a majority of the episodes. It's actually pretty jarring going from episode to episode as the tone seems to change heavily at any given time. I'm still enjoying to good ones, but the boring/bad ones are just that :(

I've always wondered this but never found a proper answer to it.
Was there any reason for Seven to hide from Zero his true heritage? (Besides dramatic reveal) Had he been a responsible parent Zero probably would have never been banished and Belial would have been stopped earlier. It's something that always bugs me. |
Man this page feels as if all of us were talking to ourselves. :lol
Anyways finally got around to watching the first episode of Mebius, it was pretty awesome, it had this epic feeling around it, complete with space battle and everything! A brief summary: it's been 25 years since the last time monsters attacked earth (poor Max :p), Mebius who has been recently appointed as an Ultraman by Father of Ultra is sent to earth not only to protect it but also to learn and grow. GUYS is the newest organization protecting earth, but things get quite hectic with the return of Monsters and Ultras. Mebius definitely feels like a rookie, his fighting style still need to be polished, he puts at risk the city and barely reacts once his color timer starts blinking. The current and future member of GUYS are introduced and they already have more developed personalities than the night raiders :P, also as an anniversary series there was a very nostalgic feeling about it, one of my favorite moments is when a kid asks his father if the giant before him is an Ultraman like the ones his mother saw (I suppose she passed away) it was incredibly heartwarming to see children and adults cheering for Mebius together, remembering their past heroes and their future hope. So yeah I quite liked it, I'll probably go slowly with it but it seems like it will be a fun ride. Remember! I will not go to school on an empty stomach. Remember! I will air out the bedding when the weather is good. Remember! I will be careful of cars when walking by the side of the road. Remember! I will not rely on others. Remember! I will run around and play barefoot on the ground. |

Tiga Episode 37. Perhaps one of the worst episodes of anything ever. For some reason it's peace time with no kaiju having been spotted for months. So what does GUTS do? Go to look at sakura blossoms in the park and have a picnic? As if the premise weren't strange enough the entire episode is filmed from incredblly odd, diagonal, up close angles.
And it's like a blur filter was on the camera the whole time as well because huge chunks of scenery and background are blurred for literally no reason. Very odd somber music is played throughout the episode. No one, not even Daigo, is in appropriate character. The imagery, the cinematography, the music, the lighting, all wrong. It's as though they hired a write or director to do a single episode of this show with literally no knowledge of it at all. It's like the W/OOO Core War of Tiga. This is the most bizarre and awful episode of an Ultra series I've ever seen. |
Tiga 40. Yet another terrible and poorly constructed episode. Bizarre camera angles and filters and nonsensical plot. This show has been hard to make it through. I'm enjoying some of it but good lord there are some really terrible episodes.
|
You are making me reconsider my desire to watch Tiga.
|
The cast of characters, GUTS, is entertaining and interesting. Tiga himself is a decent design with decent fight choreography. And some of the kaiju designs are excellent. But there is little to no overall plot. Maybe about 5 episodes total up through 41 have involved Tiga's origin and the legacy that links him to Daigo. There are so many, and I hate to use this term, filler episodes that it isn't even funny.
Everything is so bland. Every alien invader episode is exactly the same as the one form 3 episodes further back except it's a new random breed of alien trying to do the same thing the last one was. There's no originality. Every couple of episodes is the same over and over. |
Ouch, I hope Mebius fares better as I'm really excited about it, for now I guess I can postpone Tiga, such a shame, the backstory of Tiga showed great potential.
|
After an incredibly long drag Tiga finally picked up some steam, and plot, with 43 & 44. This is where we some businessman come out of nowhere, know Daigo is Tiga, steal the Spark Lense from him, discover 2 more stone giants, have the remains of the giants from Tiga's pyramid stolen, devise a plan to clone an army of giants/ultras, and use the Spark Lense to become one of them AKA Evil Tiga. But that was all introduced orchestrated and done within in 2 episodes. Then we go right back to episodic nonsense with flower monsters that make people happy in 45.
I have no idea what the writing staff was like for this show but it's clear that several people wanted it to go in several directions and never reached a consensus. |
The flower monster was actually part of the actual over all story arc as the last time it appeared was 30 million years ago right before the ancient civilization was destroyed by the darkness. Their reappearance meant the darkness was coming soon. It's all explained in the episode.

Well, remember, Tiga was the rebirth of the series after it essentially went on hiatus in the 80s. We got the two co-production series, but this was the real "full on" return for Tsuburaya. So it may have taken some time to get the ball rolling up again. There's a lot of good stuff from this era; unfortunately, not a lot of it is subbed.

Personally I ate up Ultraseven X with a spoon... short series at only 12 epidoes, but packed with some really good sci-fi drama. |

I would be happy with at least the movies, the second one is apparently subbed but I can't find the First Contact anywhere... Only 12? That sounds interesting, that said I know nothing about Seven, as a matter of fact I don't even like him. Can a total newbie to Seven enjoy the show? |

Done with Tiga, or the series at least. The final two episodes were pretty good. Nice to finally have some payoff after the humdrum of the rest of the series. However I also know that Tiga Dark, and more of Tiga's origin, is in the Final Odyssey film, which I can't find a torrent for :(

----- Nexus: It is the bond that is passed along and connects our souls. I just finished the show, I'll keep things short since the official thread opens tomorrow, but it was a very satisfactory ending, that tied everything together. I loved Nexus! I was always interested in it, but had it not been for LWW I would have continued to postpone it, so I'm very thankful to Tokunation for choosing it. :D The show was simply great, it was dark and grim with Jun, Ren reminded us that the light is hope, and Komon truly brought the meaning of the word Nexus, The light is a bond, and Nexus suceeded in making it the main moral of it's story. I expected a different show, with Nexus constantly changing hosts, but this was better than expected. My main complaint: The Next/Nexus/Noa/Nelly was basically a non-entity, it worked for the show, as it kept the focus on the human side of Ultraman, but I would have loved to see more of Noa. Next I'm watching Ultra Seven X, it's only 12 episodes long and supposing Blade wins the LWW I can fill the spot Nexus opened with it. |
I just had a really thoughtful post about why I disliked Tiga overall so much. And of course I closed my browser by accident before I could post it.
Facepalm. |
