Shin Kamen Rider, written by Hideaki Anno, to be released in 2023
Announced on the livestream as the 3rd major project for the 50th anniversary!
They also announced the CSM Typhoon Belt 50th Memorial version. https://mobile.twitter.com/Herotokus...98750003634177 |
And in 2026 Shin Gorenger.
|
Jeez! Hope this is good.

Now this could be excellent. Remember people, before you drop Evangelion or Shin Godzilla comparisons: Anno is of the opinion that if you adapt something you should modernize it while keeping its core elements alive. That's why Shin Godzilla is a modern catastrophe movie with a man-made monster destroying humanity while the government hilariously fails. The core elements are kept alive while the premise is updated.
If anything I expect him to go hard on the antifascist message of the original Kamen Rider, and I’m here for it. |
I thought we were gonna get Shin's comeback for a second there :lol
Oh well, I'm curious as to the direction this will take. I wasn't a big fan of The First, so hopefully this one will better appeal to me. |

Anno's comment: Fifty years ago, most of the boys in primary schools at that time were fascinated by the life-sized hero called Kamen Rider. I was one of them. I started this project because I wanted to repay the enormous benefits I received from the TV show 50 years ago in the form of a film 50 years later. This project aims to create a film that fulfills the dreams of adults that have been with us since childhood and a film that depicts the dreams of children that remain with us even after we grow up. We want to show the epoch-making world of the masks created by Shotaro Ishinomori and Toei Studio in a modern context. We also aim to create an entertaining work that can be enjoyed by those who do not know the original film. We will do our best to achieve this. Also, due to changes in the production schedule caused by the Corona disaster, the film had to be postponed for two years. CEO Akira Onodera's comment: The history of riders is also the history of innovation. "It doesn't matter what kind of Kamen Rider you have," said his father, Shotaro Ishinomori. The history of many riders who have been fighting for the freedom of mankind has finally reached 50 years. On the other hand, my father was always keen on recreating the origins of Kamen Rider such as "True" and "Black". Director Anno's "Shin Kamen Rider" is the latest work, but at the same time it is also the origin. These two mix again in the milestone year of 50 years. Of course, I think it would be very nice for my father. I look forward to the director's challenge. |
this was wonderful news to wake up to!! I'm so excited
|
Suuuper excited for this. Anno has a good grasp on the core of toku properties like this and how to bring out the messages they hold. I'm really interested in his modern take on Shocker.
|
Isn't there already a Shin Kamen Rider?

This is exactly what I wanted. I love Annos work and it's exciting to see him get to handle the pillars of tokusatsu. What a legacy he is creating!
|
Next he should make Shin Gamera and the plan to unite the big 4 Tokusatsu studios is complete.

The hits just keep on coming. I wasn't expecting this either, I honestly thought the project announcements were going to be a game or a Kamen Rider Anniversary movie like the 2016 Ichigo movie, or Heisei Generations, or something like that. Never would have I ever thought, Anno would jump onto Kamen Rider straight off the heels of Shin Ultraman, normally I'd expect them to wait until the movie came out before revealing something like this. And I am on board for it! I loved Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman looks great so far, and seeing how much he loves Ultraman, and what direction the film seems to be going, I think he'll deliver us a great Kamen Rider movie, that's hopefully better than The First.

Also, according to Anno, this movie has been in development 5-6 years ago. Way before Shin Gojira was out. It was supposed to come out this year, but COVID hit it like the massive truck it is.
Anno's a super, big, massive tokusatsu fan. If there's anyone I'd fully trust the franchise to, it'd be him. Kamen Rider is in good hands. https://64.media.tumblr.com/6e9f088d...x2po1_1280.jpg |
Well this could be pretty cool!
|
Dang, was hoping Shin was gonna finally get his due.
Still, this is cool news. Will be interesting to see how it stacks up to The First, since I rather liked that movie. |
Okay, yeah, this is more my speed! I'll have to wait and see how that BLACK reboot turns out, but a modern reimagining of Kamen Rider by Anno instantly has my goodwill.
(Also, I unironically thought this news might be a late April Fools' joke when I first saw it. With how many of these things are coming out, "Shin ____, written and/or directed by Hideaki Anno" should be the new "& Knuckles" meme at this point. :lol) |
Ooh, this I'm very excited for! Shin Godzilla was fantastic, and Shin Ultraman looks great from the trailer. I feel a bit bad for poor Kamen Rider Shin though, not only did he have a horribly depressing movie, he's now getting overwritten by what will most likely be a much more popular movie
|
Man these announcements just keep getting better and better. Evangelion is my favorite anime of all time and Shin Godzilla was incredible, so my hype level for this is very high.
|
A Black reboot and now a Shin Kamen Rider movie. I'm so down for the next two years!!

I am definitely expecting this to have more thought put into it and be a little more cerebral than what Inoue penned. I mean, it's obvious to compare it to the last time they did a modern film update of the original Kamen Rider, but it will be interesting to see how they handle it.
Is that illustration Ichigo's new design? I wonder what he looks like without the longcoat. Will Ichimonji show up? I don't know if they're doing this expecting a sequel in mind, and obviously the core focus will be on Hongo, but if you're re-imagining the original Kamen Rider then I would think you'd have to acknowledge Nigo to some extent. Will we get the classic three Kaijin (Spider->Bat->Snake) like we did in The First? Will we see any Shocker execs? Great Leader? I hope they use Tachibana-san more than The First did. |
This is great news and I'm hoping that this will be released overseas as well.
|
Ahhhh! I’m literally screaming!!! This is so exciting!
|
The First/The Next isn't a high bar to clear, but I've wanted a more grounded take on Kamen Rider ever since those movies, only, y'know, better.
Man, this, the Black remake, and the W anime is pretty awesome. |
I think the fact that Anno has been stewing on this movie for 5 years already tells me it's going to be a damn sight better than Inoue's bizarre attempt.
Although Kamen Rider #1 wasn't that bad, but I think Fujioka's charisma is what really carried that film. |
Pour one out for Kazamatsuri Shin. Nobody will call him Shin Kamen Rider again after this movie comes out...

So, when'll we be seeing Spider-Man pointing memes for the Shin Kamen Riders?

2 Promo Videos, based on the original Kamen Rider Opening

From these promos we not only get to see the suit and bike, but we also get a glimpse at the Spider Kaijin. And it looks slick as fuck!

Wow the resemblance to the original show is uncanny! I'm so so glad they are sticking with the original colors and that white belt.
|
Ikematsu spent the press conference on crutches due to a torn ACL.
https://www.oricon.co.jp/news/220873...ref_cd=jstw003 either that or Anno is such a stickler for accuracy that he broke the poor guys' leg... |
Okay I love the idea of having the Spider Kaijin's legs on the head like The First, but instead of the spindly legs it's presented like they're dreads.
|
Pretty excited for this! It's kinda wild that there's basically no redesign for Kamen Rider at all outside his Typhoon; even The First was more distinct -- this is going arguably more back-to-the-roots than Shin Ultraman.
On the whole this is looking awesome. The First was a bit more of a remix of ideas to get across the core story while Shin here is looking like a very faithful retelling of those first 13 episodes. Looks like 2023 already has something great in store for me! |
Like with Shin Ultraman, I appreciate that Shin Kamen Rider is for the most part just the original Ichigou design, with a few more details here and there. I feel like the production team has this confidence about the original Ichigou design, that it doesn't need any kind of radical modernizations in order to appeal to current audiences.
