Why are we surprised now he doesn't give a damn? Why does it surprise us that he's letting the Demon from Samurai hire back all of the Samurai Writers for SMF?

Information gets around a lot easier, a lot faster. What could've happened behind closed doors in '92 isn't so private these days.

Also, because ~20 years have passed. You'd think the guy would have changed by now.
