Well before the Greed had to possess people in order to take human form but then all Ankh does is point at someone and transforms. This may seem somewhat innocuous but when the Greed first decided to blend in like Ankh did they actually dedicated screen time to the bodies they had possessed, drawing our attention to it. So this seemed kinda dumb on the writers part.

But like I say with how inconsistent all the flashbacks from 800 years ago have been, I'm assuming right now that half the writing staff have come into this show completely blind.
