Shinkenger for example, pacing issues aside, is SO Japanese that the fact they didn't really localise it...like at all...for Samurai is the reason I just don't think the show worked.
Other shows, like say DekaRanger, aren't so easy to place as I think the core concepts translated very well to SPD and although SPD isn't my favourite season, seeing all the new stuff they made for that and how they made the show their own without really deviating from the core stories that much at all is fascinating.
Deka is a pretty good starting point for Sentai, too.
That is a pretty interesting way for a Power Ranger fan to get into Sentai, though. By watching the Sentai whose PR equivalent kept similar concepts (While Geki and JF have a tenuous connection, the underlying theme of martial arts is still present).
