I think you hit on the head there. Sometimes it mak sense but I find myself skipping through a lot of those battles when I watch older stuff. I don't get why the monster can't just die without turning giant, at least skip the Mechs in episodes where they put in significant effort to find the weak spot and then the mech battle ends up being completely standard.
